When one was a child, one didn’t expect there would be a period of time before they became an adult and had to wear a suit, that they’d be happily sitting in a small living room on a mouldy sofa, drinking home brewed cider and laughing at horror movies whilst attempting to smoke a cigar they had bought from a wrinkly grey man who wore a moth eaten brown suit in an old tobacco shop, nor having a dinner party with some lovely vegans and vegetarians, eating the best broccoli ever to be eaten and stuffed pancakes whose texture resembled that of latex, nor naming an intruding loft rat ‘Bob’, nor making a habit out of kissing a handsome brown eyed jazz playing man, nor having a very brief stint with Red Stripe beer. Wouldn’t it be funny if I talked to some friendly students I have met and bonded with along my university journey and made them reflect on their childhood memories? Let’s put down the academic journal, test tubes, calculator, textbook on the history of politics or whatever you’re paying to study, brew up a big pot of herbal tea and a wedge of homemade carrot cake, which recipe you have perfected after all those many hours spent procrastinating, and remember when life was easy: when you didn’t have to play hide and seek with the rent man, you didn’t have an unlicensed TV under your bed and you were allowed to get married in the playground with a bouquet of daisies and dandelions.

A stroll through the childhood memories of some friendly fellow students

Citation preview

When one was a child, one didn’t

expect there would be a period of

time before they became an adult

and had to wear a suit, that

they’d be happily sitting in a

small living room on a mouldy

sofa, drinking home brewed cider

and laughing at horror movies

whilst attempting to smoke a cigar

they had bought from a wrinkly

grey man who wore a moth eaten

brown suit in an old tobacco shop,

nor having a dinner party with

some lovely vegans and

vegetarians, eating the best

broccoli ever to be eaten and

stuffed pancakes whose texture

resembled that of latex, nor

naming an intruding loft rat

‘Bob’, nor making a habit out of

kissing a handsome brown eyed jazz

playing man, nor having a very

brief stint with Red Stripe beer.

Wouldn’t it be funny if I talked

to some friendly students I have

met and bonded with along my

university journey and made them

reflect on their childhood

memories? Let’s put down the

academic journal, test tubes,

calculator, textbook on the

history of politics or whatever

you’re paying to study, brew up a

big pot of herbal tea and a wedge

of homemade carrot cake, which

recipe you have perfected after

all those many hours spent

procrastinating, and remember when

life was easy: when you didn’t

have to play hide and seek with

the rent man, you didn’t have an

unlicensed TV under your bed and

you were allowed to get married in

the playground with a bouquet of

daisies and dandelions.
