Stewardship-Sharing Our Treasure with the Community

“ST. MARGARET’S CEMETERY” IS THE MAY RECIPIENT The May Charitable Giving collection held on May 10 and 11, 2014, will support our Church cemetery, St. Margaret’s in Minnetonka. St. Margaret’s

Cemetery is located at 11165 Bren Road with history dating back to the late 1800’s. St. Margaret’s was established by the parishioners of St. Margaret’s Church and eventually the cemetery became affiliated with St. Joseph

Church once St. Margaret’s and St. Mary’s Churches were consolidated in 1921. The cemetery land was donated by the Dvorak family; its perpetual care has been possible through the establishment of an endowment fund made possible through generous donations from the Feltl families. Other income is generated through grave sales as well as modest revenue from annual burials and plant stand rental. However, expenses are always increasing. The cemetery board has identified maintenance and improvement projects for the upcoming season. This includes repairing fencing along the four sides of the cemetery, replacing the 60+ year-old St. Margaret’s cemetery sign, plus maintenance and upkeep of the lawn (fertilizing and seeding). We honor our history and the families before us through our attention and care of our cemetery grounds. The second collection will be for the St. Margaret’s Cemetery. Checks should be made out to St. Gabriel the Archangel Church with St. Margaret’s Cemetery written in the memo section. Please be generous with your support.

Parish News

Dear Parishioners, When I was a student at St. Thomas, my younger sister was a student at St. Ben’s, and she played on the volleyball team. Every once in a while, St. Ben’s would come to St. Thomas and play volleyball, and of course, I would come to the game. One time, I brought some of my good friends from the seminary with me. They had never met my sister before, so when we first sat down, the teams were still on the benches and I was about to point out who my sister was when one of my friends said, “Wait! Don’t tell me. I want to guess.” So I thought, “Okay, this could be interesting” and I said, “Go ahead.” He scanned the bench for no more than five seconds and pointed right at my sister and said, “That’s her.” I figured this was some kind of joke, that he had seen her picture somewhere in my room or something, and he must have known what I was thinking by the look on my face, because he said, “I didn’t know who your sister was. I guessed her because she’s sitting exactly the way you always sit.” Apparently you can spot a Liekhus from across a gymnasium by the way he/she is sitting. But I must say as I reflected on this, I was pleased by that whole situation. For one thing, my friend knew me so well that he could pick out little things about me that most people wouldn’t. Also, I realized my sister and I probably have more things in common than either of us realize, so much so that my friend can pick her out of a lineup from fifty yards away. And that’s good. Being familiar with other people’s habits and mannerisms and having other people know your habits and mannerisms is a sign of closeness, of intimacy, of being connected. When Christ meets his two disciples on their way to Emmaus, we read that their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. They looked him right in the face, and didn’t know it was Jesus. What it was that prevented them, we aren’t told. But what could prevent them from recognizing their Lord, in whom they had put all their hope? Could it be because they had given up hope? Notice that they were leaving Jerusalem and the other disciples, and returning to their old way of life in Emmaus. They were leaving. They said, “We were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel,” with the tacit understanding that now they knew they were wrong. Jesus offers them a way back. He lights their hearts on fire, he reminds them why they followed him in the first place. But notice it was still up to them to invite him back into their lives. Jesus wanted to restore their relationship, but he wasn’t going to force them. He acted like he was not going to stop with them in the village, like he was going to continue on, but they pleaded with him to stay. They were connected to him again, so that when he broke and blessed the bread the way he always did, they were no longer prevented from recognizing him. Are we connected to Jesus? Are we close to him? To answer that question, we can ask a different one: do we recognize him when he is right in front of us? The truth is, he is always right in front of us. Do we see Christ in the person next to us? In the person who just cut us off on the highway? If not, what is preventing our eyes from recognizing him? Why are we no longer close to him, to the point where we can’t see him? Maybe it’s because our hearts are no longer burning for love of Christ the way they once did. Maybe it’s because we’ve been distracted by things and worldly concerns to the point where we’ve lost sight of what’s most important, our relationship with our Lord. If this is the case, we must restore that

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Hch 6:8-15; Sal 119 (118):23-24, 26-27, 29-
