Scottish Formula Ford Championship Race One: Ken Thirlwall was on pole, the track was wet but the sun came out as Ken shot off the grid to lead. He never looked back as he had 3 seconds lead by lap 3 and cruised further away and off towards the flag to win as he pleased. There was no Alistair Dow to chase him, but Ian Munro dived into 2nd at the hairpin passing Andrew Brennan on lap 1. Then Ross McEwan demoted Brenan on lap 2 and took 2nd from Munro on lap 3 at Duffus. Brenan fought back and a lap later retook 3rd diving up the inside of Munro at Clark. He was a second down on 2nd placed McEwan, but McEwan lost time opposite locking as he came out of the chicane . By lap 6 Brennan was on his gearbox. Two laps later Brenan was back in 2nd going through at Butchers as McEwan had slowed defending at Scotsman. We lost Munro on lap 6 he went off at Clark head on into the tyre wall when half a second back in 4th. These 3 had pulled well clear of the rest led by Jordan Gronkowski. Race Two: Ken Thirlwall put in another master class drive despite a Safety car period for 3 laps after on lap 2 Andrew Brennan went into the tyre wall at Clark when lying 2nd having passed the fast starting Ross McEwan. Once racing resumed Thirlwall disappeared at the rate of 2 seconds per lap as the rest scrapped. Jordan Gronkowski was quickly up to 2nd past Keiron Blake as Ross McEwan had spun off and was out. Gronkowski eased away opening 5 seconds gap in 3 laps as Blake defended from an inspired Ivor Mairs. The classic class driver was in sparkling form, he had passed Michael Gray on lap 4 at Butchers having run side by side through Scotsman. Ivor took 3rd at the hairpin on lap 6. He kept the place to the flag for his best result this season. Post race Ivor said: “I can’t believe it, I’ve never been to the podium before in over 20 years of racing.” Results: 1 Thirlwall 11 laps in 16m43.9s (50.4mph); 2 Gronkowski +17.0s; 3 Mairs; 4 Gray; 5 Chisholm; no other finishers. Scottish Classic Sports and Saloon Championship in association with Waterevolution and Yokohama Tyres Race One: The smallest grid this year following a big turnout at BTCC the week before, but the racing was still keen. Stan Bernard beat poleman John Marshall into Duffus. These two were nose to tail for 2 laps then Raymond Boyd went through to 2nd as John had electrical problems going up the hill. He recovered and was back in 2nd at the hairpin. He chased Stan who was now a second clear, catching him by lap 5. They swapped places on lap 6 at Duffus . John then eased a second clear though Stan would cut the gap a few cars lengths at Scotsman but then drop back again by Clark as John kept a steady lead. Then he slid exiting Clark on the last lap and Stan again closed to within a few car lengths but John held on to win. Robert Marshall chased Raymond Boyd and passed the 911 at Scotsman on lap 6 his Escort going up the inside. Boyd was under no threat as he was over 10 seconds clear of Willy Toye by then. Willy has chased Mario Ferrari’s Ferrari 308 ( what else would he drive) for a few laps , before passing him on lap 7 at Duffus, then gave the crowd a big opposite lock slide out of the hairpin on the last lap in the TR8. Tim Reid got the Marcos home 7th despite Robin Benn’s Capri being all over him from lap 3 when Benn demoted top Class A car the Mini Ogle of George Leitch. Race Two: We only had 13 cars as Mario Ferrari was a dns and the track was drying with a clear dry line. John Marshall was again beaten away by the 911 of Stan Bernard. But he was into the lead at Clark on lap 1 and his Escort was uncatchable as he opened up a second a lap gap, before easing up on lap 7. Stan looked safe, Raymond Boyd was 3rd for a lap then Willy Toye rumbled past up the hill. Stan was 3 seconds clear of Willy Toye by lap 3, but the gap stabilised until over the final 2 laps, when Willy cut it so they were under a second apart at the flag. Robert Marshall was always just a couple of car lengths behind Willy having nipped past Boyd on lap 3, but Boyd was also only 3 or 4 car lengths back so this train all nearly caught Stan near the end. Well back in 6th came Donald Laid in his Elan, but he had Tim Reid and Robin Benn for close company. Benn had led this group for 7 laps before Laird dived past at Duffus, then Reid followed a lap later at the hairpin in his Marcos, as the 3 litre Capri lost another place to a lighter Sportscar. Race One: It wasn’t one of their biggest grids, butthe racing was still good. We had 4 drivers in with achance of the XR2 title, Russell Milloy was leadingby 26 points from Peter Cruickshank, with twooutsiders in Dave Colville and Wayne MacCauleyover 40 points back. The ST cup had already gone toRory Bryant. We had a wet track and the rain wasspitting down, so the ST drivers were smiling, theymay start 20 seconds after the XR2s but they havesuperior tyres. Pole sitter MacCauley was beateninto Duffus by Dave Colville. Russell Milloy nippedinto 2nd on lap 2 at Clark with Craig Taylor keepingup with the top 3, but were was Cruickshank.Answer he was now up to 5th but not in his familiarred car, he had hired a car and it was slowlydropping back. To make matters worse on lap 6 TheSTs caught him and ST leader George Orr went pastsoon followed by Scott Robertson, who had beenclose to George early on. George was 3rd by lap 7taking Milloy at Clark, then diving into the lead afew hundred metres later as he swept past the toptwo XR2s to lead the race. He then opened outnearly 3 seconds lead as Robertson took a littlelonger to pass the XR2s. Dave Colville held on to3rd despite lots of pressure from Wayne MacCauley, then Stuart Haston’s ST went by them on the lastlap. Dave was still top XR2 in 4th only 4 tenths of asecond ahead of Wayne at the flag. Russell Milloycame home 3rd XR2 in 7th playing it safe andgetting lots of points as Craig Taylor was still 2seconds ahead of Peter Cruickshank. Russell wonthe XR2 title and said: “There was no need to go outand try to win, when 3rd would be enough.”

MacCauley closed down Milloy and by lap 8they were nose to tail, and that’s how they ran thelast 3 laps, with new Champion Milloy winning byunder half a second, despite some low flyingaerobatics from MacCauley who rode the high kerbsat Clark and got well up on two wheels. Colvilledrifted 4 seconds back but he was 7 seconds clear ofCraig Taylor who was going well and droppingMike Strong. Top ST George Orr came in 6th afterhaving Scott Robertson all over him for every one ofthe 10 laps. Big thanks out to Peter(Waterevolution) for a splendid BBQ in adverseconditions & to all the Knockhill marshal’s who aretoo many to name individually.Mr Mckinna (Classics Scrutineer) deserves a shouthere, chatting to Rob in the paddock left me a little inawe of the hours he contributes to Motorsport inScotland.I agree with Ian Morton, the social side isbuilding nicely, let’s keep up the camaraderie. Finallymy onboard footage can be seen on youtube... #68Incar. Cheers - Rodger Motherwell

Hi all,I would first of all like to thank Chris (Edwards) andeveryone involved in arranging the Classic series toappear during the BTCC weekend. Still can’t believethat my first outing in our newly completed SudSprint was in front of the touring car crowds. Wow ! I would also like to thank Peter for his very generoushospitality at Saturdays BBQ although I’m sure itwas a ploy to weigh some us down a bit for Saturdaysrace. Finally it was a pleasure to race alongside all ofyou, hope the newest rookie didn’t hold to many ofyou up. Regards Alan Barron

KevinJust for information, here’s what Richard John Neal(ITV 4 commentator) had to say: “It was probably the

best BTCC meeting I have been to in many years. Ashame that the race (Classics) was punctuated by thesafety car and ultimately stopped as we had a lotmore to talk about.I can tell you that the reaction was extremely positiveto both the Minis and the Classics. Everyone saidhow good it was to see some great motor racing witha huge variety of proper, well prepared cars on thecircuit.”Well done, everybody - Richard Merrell

The following is from Dan Mayo of TOCA: “Hi Stuart, I thought it was a great event, big crowd, great weather, good racing, bit of controversy andfew crash-bang incidents. Scottish classes were great, didn’t cause any issues in the paddock all weekendand provided good entertainment, which is excellent. And many thanks for your help with the event - it’salways a pleasure to come to your circuit, everyone isalways so helpful.Kind regards - Dan MayoBTCC Championship Co-ordinatorWell done to all the Scottish drivers for flying the flagso well at this event.Yours in Sport - Stuart GrayEvents Director, Knockhill Racing Circuit
