Pioneer Association

GAA News

The Thursday Club

Community Games

“COMMUNITY ALERT” IS BEING RELAUNCHED. Now more than ever people need to be aware and concerned about the safety of their families and property and that of their neighbours, particularly those who are vulnerable. e Community Alert Programme addresses issues of Community Care, Community Safety and Community Crime prevention in partnership with Muintir na Tire and An Garda Siochana. We have arranged for Mr Diarmuid Cronin Community Alert Ocer with Muintir na Tire and a member of An Garda Siochana to attend a meeting on Wednesday 26th October in the GAA Club House, Clarina to inform people of the role and importance of being involved in Community Alert. We look forward to receiving support from any person concerned about their community and representatives from all Local Associations to attend this very important meeting on Wednesday 26th October.

Clarina Tidy Towns is now in it’s third year of operation. e group was set up originally in 2009 to bring together the village, blending the old with the new to improve the community. e group meet every Tuesday night at 7.30pm in the car park at the chemist shop. ere are usually between 7 and 10 volunteers who participate each week however additional help would be greatly appreciated. 2011 got o to a slow start, the initial few weeks involved a lot of general cleaning up, with very heavy debris to be removed from the footpaths etc. aer the severe winter. Once the weather improved from May onwards, the ower tubs were planted, hedges cut, weeds pulled, signs and gates were painted and a general tidy up was undertaken every week. We entered the 2011 Tidy Towns competition and this year we scored 218 marks which was an improvement of 10 marks on last years results with a slight increase in most of the categories which makes the work worthwhile. With the dark evenings approaching, our Tuesday evening initiative will be nishing shortly. For 2012, we intend to start our preparations for the Tidy Towns Competition earlier in the year, using the “ subject categories” assessed as way of identifying and prioritising projects. In the medium term we hope to put a large raised ower bed on the Limerick side of the village. ere were two areas we did not make any progress on, “Wildlife and Natural Amenities” and “Waste Minimisation” .Projects will have to be considered in these two areas and we would really welcome assistance from anybody who has a knowledge/ interest in this category. We would like to thank everybody who supported and contributed to the Tidy Towns this year. Volunteers are always needed and even if you feel you could not give your ongoing commitment to the group, if there is a particular project you would like to suggest/ participate in, we would be delighted to hear from you.Clarina Tidy Towns Group

e 2011 (eleventh) edition of the Ballybrown Parish Journal is now being organised for going to print to be ready for launching on December 2nd. e editorial committee of Tom Donovan, Des Fitzgerald, Michael McNamara, Martin Hayes and Willie Ryan are now collecting material for inclusion in this years Journal. All the organisations in the Parish are invited to contribute articles, photographs etc. We are also looking for wedding, new baby and graduation photographs from 2011, you can give these to any one of the above committee members or they can be le into Hayes’s Shop in Tervoe. We are always looking for old photographs that are connected to our Parish and to our Parish history, these old black and white pictures are in drawers all over the parish gathering dust, and are an invaluable part of our Journal and ensure that it is a greatly sought aer publication. We are also looking for advertisements for this publication and we thank all the local business’s in advance for their continued support year aer year and without whose nancial support the Journal would not be a viable proposition. Full page Advert = €100, half page = €60 and quarter page = €40.

As we prepare once again for winter to cast it dark shadows one would be expecting things to be slowing down on the playing elds, but not so for Ballybrown G.A.A. Club. At this point in time even aer a long season the under 12 teams are waiting for the nals to be played in the Gaelic Grounds. e under 13 hurlers are in quarter nal action but alas the footballers are out of the competitive stages of their respective competition. e under 14 hurlers have qualied for the shield nal and the footballers have qualied for a quarter nal position. e under 15 hurlers have just started their matches and have recorded three wins from three outings. e 16’s team have qualied unbeaten in the hurling and have also qualied for the football quarter nals. e minor hurlers unfortunately lost out narrowly to Doon in their County quarter nal and the minor footballers suered similar heartache being defeated in the premier minor county semi nal by a strong Father Casey’s side. It was indeed a tremendous achievement for this team to qualify and then to play so well against a team that only plays the code of Football. e under 21 hurlers have a re-xed County semi nal match with Kilmallock. Our junior team has nished their involvement in all competitions at this time. Finally it was a brilliant achievement for our intermediate team to have reached the Nick Greene Sponsored County Intermediate nal for the second time in three years. Our opponents were En but unfortunately once again our luck ran out when we needed the rub of the green most. e promised land of senior hurling has once again been denied to us but the club are not going to let this setback derail the process of going back to basics and starting all over again. e support the team has received all year has been tremendous as it will be in the future I am sure. Finally Congratulations to the Ballybrown Junior Camogie team who defeated Glenroe comprehensively recently in the County Semi-Final. ey now play Crecora in the Final on Sunday 9th October. Commiserations to the U-16 Camogie side who suered defeat at the hands of Ballyagran on Sunday last in the county nal. e Lotto continues to be run very successfully and thanks to all who support this cause on a weekly basis. e clubhouse remains available to all for various functions and booking can be made to the Manager Michael Byrnes.

(Clarina Active Retired Assocation)At last it’s time to go back to “fun” ursdays. e ursday Club opened its doors to its eager members on the 8th September aer the bad summer we are looking forward to one day a week where we can catch up on all the news and look forward to a really good time. Oh happy days! and what makes our Club so special in a word is - e Members. Each week they come, hail, rain, or snow to play cards, bingo, sing songs and a bit of music from our two wonderful musicians and our singers an odd quiz and some light exercises is the order of the day. We plan visits to other ARA’s (Active Retired Associations) and we always get a great welcome. Not all Clubs have the same activities so we learn from others. Our annual outing this year took us to Killarney. Unfortunately it rained all day so we engaged in a little “retail therapy” while others played cards in the Hotel, others found shelter in the nearest pub for coee and the like!!

e club also caters for the artists in our midst and the annual Exhibition in the Bucket was opened this year by Fr Muiris O’Connor and Monsignor Lane this occurred in conjunction with our break-up for the summer holidays. Mr & Mrs O’Dea provided a lovely meal and then a bit of craic agus ceol with music provided by Noel Cronin. e annual Mass for our deceased members took place and sadly the list is getting longer. anks to Fr Muiris who always makes this occasion a memorable one.

ursday morning at our Club is a happy place and we have learned “To know how to grow old is the master work of wisdom and one of the most dicult chapters in the great art of living” (Henri Frederic Amiel)

e highlight of the year for our local community games was the weekend of 12-14th August when our 15 competitors returned home with national medals. Our U16 skittles team won gold, our U14 skittles team won silver and our 2 swimmers receiving silver and bronze. We would like to thank all the locals who supported us in our ‘Guess the score’ fundraiser prior to their departure. A sincere word of thanks must go to MPCC credit union who sponsored our competitors. Credit to our local Centra for giving the competitors gear-bags and Brian O’Sullivan and his sta for their very warm reception they gave to our competitors on their return. On our lap of honour around the parish, Martin Hayes (a former committee member) also greeted our competitors to a hero’s welcome. We are very grateful to the three businesses for their support on this occasion. We also had 8 competitors representing us the following weekend. Although they were not as successful in their elds, none the less, it was a fantastic achievement for those who represented us in U13 mixed relay, U14 hurdles, U14 long puck and U16 marathon to reach the national nals. It is a small group of people who have kept community games alive in Ballybrown/Clarina and even though we do receive a lot of support from parents when children are participating, it would be great to see new people coming on board to give a hand throughout the year.

Damien O’ Brien (Secretary)

All our advertisers will get a complimentary copy of the Journal. e closing date for all items for inclusion in the Journal is Friday October 21st 2011. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
