From Steep Hillsides: Ancient Rock Carvings from Dazu, ChinaUntil 3 April The steep hillsides of the Dazu world heritage site near Chongqing contain an exceptional series of rock carvings dating from the 9th to the 13th century. The carvings comprise some 50,000 figures in total, and are remarkable for their aesthetic quality, their rich diversity of subject matter, both secular and religious, and the light that they shed on everyday life in China during this period. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to see some of these sculptures, which have never been seen outside China before. Dazu is a real treasure house of Chinese art history and an important expression of the ideas of Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism, as well as a fascinating insight into Chinese daily life.National Museum Cardiff is proud to be the only venue for this important exhibition before it returns to Dazu.

Lyrical Lines: Augustus John’s (1878-1961) drawings and etchingsUntil 5 June Renowned for his exceptional draughtsmanship, this special display brings together some of the finest drawings and etchings by Augustus John in the Museum’s collection. This display marks the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death.

Lifetime to Legacy: the Derek Williams Trust Collection25 March-5 June A display of a magnificent modern British collection, which belonged to Welsh collector Derek Williams. The exhibition will also show further acquisitions of modern and contemporary art made by the Derek Williams Trust. It includes work by Michael Andrews, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson, John Piper, Ceri Richards Sean Scully and many Welsh artists.

High Kicks and Low Life: Toulouse-Lautrec Prints21 April-26 June Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) was inspired by the colourful nightlife of Montmartre, Paris where he settled in 1884. His prolific output depicts the actresses, dancers and prostitutes of the area and provides a fascinating glimpse into the seamier side of Parisian life at the time. This stunning exhibition of around 50 prints from the British Museum’s fine holdings by the artist is divided into two sections, ‘Public Passions’ and ‘Private Passions’.‘Public Passions’ includes striking images of the can-can dancer Louise Weber, known as La Goulue (‘The Glutton’) and ‘Private Passions’ shows how Toulouse-Lautrec portrayed the extremely private life of prostitutes with great sensitivity.A British Museum Tour.

Supported through the generosity of the Dorset Foundation.

Origins: Leaving your Mark10 May-2 OctoberThe introduction of the Roman alphabet to Wales was a key turning point in the transition from prehistory to history. Evidence of writing, both official and by ordinary people, in Roman Wales is set in the wider picture of the use of writing more generally in the Roman world. The origins of the Roman alphabet and its legacy – it is used today for writing both Welsh and English – are explored. The continued use of Latin long after the end of Roman rule can easily be charted in the early medieval inscribed stones and in the natural history galleries, where it forms the basis for the scientific names of animals and plants.

Nerys Johnson (1942-2001): A celebration display of the Welsh-born artist6 June The display will also feature a Howard Hodgkin print, recently acquired with the generous assistance of the Nerys Johnson Contemporary Fund and the Derek Williams Trust.

St Fagans has changed a lot since it opened over 60 years ago and we are continually striving to improve this national treasure.

We will be extending the timeline of the stories told at the Museum so visitors can follow the history of the development of Wales from the very first human inhabitants to the present day and beyond.

What we hope to do

Extend the timeline

At the moment, St Fagans concentrates onthe history of the people of Wales over thelast 500 years. We will be moving the National Archaeology Collections to St Fagans from National Museum Cardiff. This will help us totell the story of the first people to live in Wales 250,000 years ago and to place the storyof Wales and her peoples in the context ofworld history.

Create an all-weather attraction

As well as improving the open-air aspect of the Museum, we will be developing the under-cover offer. The galleries in the main building willbe totally refurbished to create new learningand exhibition spaces and a brand new structure will be built in the woodlands of St Fagans for visitors to experience Wales’s history and the nation’s treasures.

Events

There will be more activities and events to support the extended timeline with an emphasis on giving the visitor a chance to take part.Visitors will also be able to experience open-air archaeology and the Museum is also keen to create opportunities for volunteers and to work closely with community groups.

Provide new routesinto Welsh history

By suggesting ways of navigating St Fagans and updating the interpretation around the site, we will be making it easier to find out more about specific aspects of Welsh history and for visitors to plan their experience according to interests and time restraints.

Enjoyment

At the core of the project is the visitor and wewill be improving facilities to try and providethe best possible experience. There will be safe places for our younger visitors to learn through play and new places to eat and meet.

The under-cover improvements will makeSt Fagans a place to enjoy all through theyear, whatever the weather.

The benefits for Wales

St Fagans is the second most visited open-air museum in Europe, attracting over 600,000 visitors a year. It has become the home of Welsh history — part of the fabric of Welsh identity and place to which many people from Wales and all over the world make a pilgrimage and expect to experience the story of Wales.

The 10 year investment in St Fagans will present a strong message of change and exciting new directions. It will reinforce the position of St Fagans as a must-see attraction for visitorsto Wales — an essential element of Welsh heritage tourism that will benefit the wholeof Wales.

Alongside Government backing, this bold new investment will also look for additional funding from the business community, grant-awarding bodies and the donations of private individuals who want to support Wales in the twenty-first century.

History at St FagansAs part of the Making History project we will be telling even more stories about Wales and its people over time.

We begin with the period 1500-1700: the time of the Tudors and Stuarts, the Act of Union, the first Welsh Bible and the British Civil Wars. Come and see the 1500-1700 exhibition in Oriel 1 form 2 April and take part in the events and trails throughout the year.
