While he never expected to be-

come an active volunteer at

Moose Jaw & District Seniors, it

wasn’t long before he became

one.

Terry Laroque is

one of our newer

members. He joined

a little over a year

ago as a member.

But he was volun-

teering before then.

What brought Terry to Moose

Jaw, and the MJDS was Lori.

When she started working as

the coordinator at the Centre, it

was not long before she had

him helping out.

Terry comes to nearly every

dance and sells 50/50 tickets

with Farris. He has been

around at the danc-

es with Farris

enough that people

have even asked him

if he was Farris’s

son. He also volun-

teers at Sidewalk

Days and other spe-

cial events at the

Centre.

Originally from Duck Lake Sas-

katchewan, Terry moved to Re-

gina several years ago. He

worked at a bank for a number

of years, and when the branch

closed he went to work for the

provincial government as an

auditor for Energy and Re-

sources.

Terry has two children in Regi-

na and a couple of grand-dogs.

The MJDSA was not the only

organization to benefit from

him moving to Moose Jaw. This year he joined the Lions and

devotes time there as well.

Thank you Terry for everything

you do at the Centre. We appre-

ciate all you do!

Busse. Good luck guys...we are rooting for you!

for the afternoon. Chanc-

es are you will leave a

winner!

Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped with the

Fowl Suppers this year. With your help we were able

to serve 295 people! It takes a lot of people to make

an event like this happen.

Thanks to the volunteers who decorated the hall, set

up the tables, assisted with cooking the meals, served

& cleaned up, cutting of pies, sold tickets and all of the

other things involved in the day.

There were also several people who assisted in other

ways. Many people donated pies and other food for

the meal or money to purchase supplies for the dinner.

Without all of you, we would never be able to provide

a meal like this.

In the 1940’s Ross Leighton was

a lineman for the telephone

company. It was a job he taught

himself to do. It meant scaling

the poles with spiked shoes.

If someone was having trouble,

they would send him out to find

out what the problem was. Ross

carried a meter that he would

use to see if it was grounded or

the wires were crossed. He

would place one end on the

wire and one on the ground to

see if it was grounded. If there

had been lightening, it would

sometimes knock out a line.

Then Ross would have to take it

apart, clean out the carbon and

put it back together.

For this work he made $1.25 an

hour and 10 cents a mile. It

wasn’t great pay, but it was a job

no one wanted to do.

He recalls when he wanted to

have a phone installed. They

wouldn’t send anyone out to

tear down the lines so he had

to do it himself. It meant tearing

down the lines and planting the

posts himself.

Doing the work was a big job

when they put the power in. It

meant he had to go through all

of the lines and cut out the

hand wound splices. They

caused all kinds of static on the

line.

It wasn’t necessarily a safe job

either. Ross remembers having

posts fall over when he was on

them. There were two guide

wires holding the poles up.

When he disconnected the line

wire, the pole fell over with him

on it. He was lucky to jump

clear of it all. Of course they

never provided any insurance

for him in case of injury. He

went to the Western Producer

and bought his own insurance.

All of this was done on top of

running a farm....the good old

days!

THE GOOD OLD DAYS

On Tuesday September

12th we were honoured

with a visit from the Wild

Rose Fiddlers from Alber-

ta. Each year this lively

group of musicians and

singers board a bus in Al-

berta for a trip to Sas-

katchewan. Along their

way they stop in Moose

Jaw and perform for us

here at the Centre.

The music was fantastic as

usual. 148 people turned

out to listen and dance.

Thanks to everyone from

the Wild Rose Fidders,

and all of those who came

to watch the performance.

A great time was had by

all!

Richter, Jim Coombs, Bert
