The Blacklist Season One
www.sonypictures.com RRP £20 The Blacklist: Complete Season One is a
crime action thriller. James Spader is
excellent as the control freak Raymond
Reddington. Full of suspense, action,
thrills and secrets the plot, although has
flaws in some places, it runs at break-
neck speed from the very first episode
and doesn’t let up. Rating: 5/5

The Crow: Stairway to Heaven
www.fabulousfilms.com RRP £39.99 The Crow: Stairway to Heaven is based
on the graphic novel by James O’Barr and
the 1994 film of the same name starring
Brandon Lee who famously died on set
when he was accidently shot.
People once believed that when someone
dies, a crow carries their soul to the Land
of the Dead. But sometimes, something
so bad happens that a terrible sadness is
carried with it and the soul can’t rest. But
sometimes, just sometimes, the crow can bring that soul back to
put the wrong things right.
Although it originally aired 16 years ago I think it would do well
today and this box set is definitely one to own.

What’s Good To Do Newsletter: Featured Review
Reviewed by David Savage I was recently asked to review Movie Edit Pro 2015 from MAGIX and was very excited to try it.
Movie Edit Pro is very powerful video editing software that allows you to add
effects such as time lapse, slow motion, distortion, transitions, picture in picture, sound effects, fading and lots more.
Installing the software took quite a long while at around 40 minutes (on an Win-dows 8.1 Pro laptop with an i5 2.50Ghz processor and 4GB RAM) but very little user interaction is required so very straightfor-ward. Once the installation had completed I was ready to start playing.
The box states the software is for beginners as well as advanced users. I would have to say yes beginners can use it easily enough but only after reading the manual and the online tutorial videos that can be access via the help menu. The tutorial videos will get you used to the basic functions and tools so be prepared to spend a little bit of time watching these before beginning to create your own video.
For test purposes I tried using the software using the demo video before reading the manual or looking at the videos, it did not go too well. I did manage to add a 3D scrolling effect to the start of the video after a bit of playing around.
I then watched the tutorial videos and they make everything so much clearer as there is so much control over what you can do in just a couple of mouse clicks which is not
obvious just looking at the timeline of the video.
Overall, while it does take a bit of time to learn how to use the software it is definitely worth putting in the time to watch the tutorials and read the manual to get the most out your creation. I am still playing around with videos and pictures and there is still so much more to learn. You can stitch different video clips together seamlessly, add audio, pictures, pan the pictures, add your own subtitles and so much more. You can take a dull home video clip and turn it into a fun masterpiece.
There are over 1000 templates to use to create professional looking videos with precise editing, You can view your efforts in the preview window as you are going along and once you are happy with your creation you can burn to DVD or Blu-ray and add a start menu for playback in your DVD/Blu-ray player or if you prefer you can save it online to Facebook or YouTube or optimize it for mobile devices such as tablets, note-books and smart phones.
As well as editing digital files on your computer you can also plug in a recording device such as video cameras, still cameras, cassettes, memory cards, USB sticks and make your videos and slideshows direct from the device.
I am very impressed with the MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 2015 software. It is extremely powerful for beginners and advanced users. While it does take a bit of time to learn and lots of attempts to create a video to be proud of, it is an excellent piece of software to edit your home movies or create fun video clips to share on your social media channels.
An excellent piece of software to create
movie makers out of beginners. And at £59.99 for the standard version, £79.99 for the plus version and £99.99 for the premium version I think it is definitely value for money.
Rating: 5/5
RRP: £59.99 to £99.99 Available to buy from www.magix.com Specifications: For Microsoft Windows 7 | 8 | 8.1 64-bit systems (Includes a 32-bit version for XP | Vista | 7 | 8 |8.1)

Stay Safe on the Roads
Written by David Savage
Winter is closing in and the days
and turning to night much earlier
making it more of a danger for
children walking home from
school , adults leaving work and
cyclists sharing the road. It is now
getting darker from around 4pm
so everybody needs to be seen
while out and about. Yes cars
have headlights but they may not
always be able to see you or may
see you too late if you are wear-
ing dark clothing. So to help
reduce the risks and make the
roads safer for pedestrians as well
as road users always try to wear
something bright.
You can do this by:
- Wearing colourful, bright or
fluorescent clothing (better during
the day).
- Wearing reflective gear or
accessories (better during the
night).
- Customise your backpack with
fluorescent colours or reflective
strips.
- Try to use well lit routes rather
than dark back streets or
passageways.
- And always make sure you use
the pedestrian crossings rather
than trying to cross between
parked cars.
- Always use the Green Cross
Code (Stop, Look and Listen)
whether it is day or night (if you
don’t know what this is ask a
parent or teacher).
Following these easy tips with
keep the roads safe for everyone.
These tips don’t just apply to in
the darker hours but also during
bad weather like rain, snow, fog
etc… The easier you can be seen,
the less chance of an accident.
Remember that while fluorescent
clothes and accessories work best
in the day, they don’t work as well
during the night so add something
reflective to your clothing or
backpack. This can easily be done
with a strip of reflective tape or a
reflective sash or belt.
If your route takes you where
there is no pavement to walk on
and you have to step in the road
always walk facing the oncoming
traffic.
And for all you cyclists out there,
remember it is against the law to
cycle in the dark without a front
white light and a red light and
reflector at the back.
If you are worried about your
child walking home from school
on their own contact the school or
the local council and see if there
are any “walking buses” in the
area where children walk in
groups making them much more
visible.
So be safe this winter and get
some high visibility and/or
reflective clothing.

The Burning Room
by Michael Connelly
www.orionbook.co.uk
RRP: £12.99 ISBN: 9781409145516
WGTD Rating: 5/5
The Burning Room by Michael Connelly is book number 19 in the Harry Bosch detective series.
Detective Hieronymus ‘Harry’ Bosch is a LAPD detective assigned to the Open-Unsolved Unit that investigates old open and unsolved murders. 10 years after the shooting of 31 year old
Orlando Merced, a member of a mariachi band, he dies from complications caused by the bullet that was lodged in his spine. At the time it was believed to be a stray bullet from a gangland shooting and now Bosch and his rookie new partner Detective Lucia ‘Lucky Lucy’ Soto are tasked with investigating the unsolved case even though the body is still fresh.
Once the bullet is removed and determined that is a case of murder this starts Bosch off to find a killer in what turns out to be a highly charged and politically sensitive case involving lots of powerful players. But was the shooting random or a pre-planned murder attempt?
While investing this case Bosch and Soto are also investigating a 21 year old fire in an illegal day-care centre that killed 9 children and a large cash robbery of a check cashing business. While very little evidence in both cases and the chief of police, press and ex-mayor on their backs they must solve both cases.
Bosch is fast approaching retirement and Soto is a rookie with potential so he is trying to solve the cases while teaching his new partner the ropes so she can become a great detective.
Overall, although The Burning Room is book 19 in the Harry Bosch series it has lost none of the excitement of the previous novels. A fast paced, crime thriller with 2 highly charged cases that is very hard to put down. Harry Bosch is a great character and his fresh new partner Soto injects new life into the series. A very well-written and thought out novel with unexpected twists and turns that will keep you turning the page. Michael Connelly is a master of crime novels and The Burning Room is definitely one to read. Highly recommended.
What do the grown-ups do? Fiona the Doctor
by Mairi McLellan
www.kidseducationalnooks.com
RRP: £7.99 ISBN: 9781783065257
WGTD Rating: 4/5
A lot of the book is written as a question
and answer session between the children and their Auntie,
who takes them to her surgery and shows them her
equipment too. There is plenty of general information given
about healthy lifestyles, e.g. how exercise helps you keep fit
and healthy. This would fit it well with school topics in this
area. It’s quite worthy in tone, the girls are told about how
important it is to have a good job to pay for “a roof over
their heads”.
The ‘What do the grown-ups do?’ series has been awarded
the Bronze medal 2014 for BEST SERIES NON-FICTION
Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards.
Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis
by Carole P. Roman
www.caroleproman.com
RRP: £6.99 | ISBN: 9781496138705
WGTD Rating: 4.5/5
I liked how the book dealt with the theme of taking other people’s things and explaining that this is wrong. I also liked how they managed to come up with a solution which kept them all right but also didn’t upset anyone’s feelings.
The treasure map included is a fabulous idea. We had great fun deciding where we would like to go and where we could find the beautiful aurora borealis for ourselves.
In conclusion a really lovely book and we would definitely look out for another one in the series.
