The Theatre Royal’s production of Puttin’ On The Ritz is set to bring Hollywood glamour to Toon courtesy of leading lady and Strictly Come Dancing sensation Pixie Lott plus Strictly world champions Kristina Rihanoff and Robin Windsor. Expect dazzling costumes and musical arrangements of hits by George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter. Theatre Royal, June 2-6, from £14 theatreroyal.co.uk

While the Seven Stories building gets a lick of paint, the team from the National Centre for Children’s Books is taking storybook adventures on the road.

A series of events include an audience at Tyneside Cinema with author Jodi Picoult as she discusses her new book Off The Page, co-written with her daughter Samantha Van Leer. Tyneside Cinema, June 3, £16 or £20 for two (inc a copy of the book), sevenstories.org.uk

PUTTIN’ ON THE RITZ MAGICAL TALES

IN A STEWHe may only be the 41st Best Stand-Up Ever (according to his 2008 show), but Stewart Lee’s sideways style has made him one of the UK’s best-loved alternative comics. From his days with Richard Herring on Fist Of Fun and co-writing and directing the hit Broadway musical satire Jerry Springer: The Opera, to his recent Comedy Vehicle show on BBC2, no subject is off limits for Lee’s satirical style. City Hall June 4-5 £21 newcastlecity hall.org

There’s a feisty side to Newcastle-native Du Blonde, as evidenced by her spunky new album Welcome Back To Milk. The Baroque pop of Beth Jeans Houghton’s previous output has morphed into a gutsy, grungy rock behemoth, and she’s never sounded so good.

Du Blonde’s live show is an all-out assault of sound; from the thundering bass of Black Flag to the plaintive After The Show, with Beth’s astonishing vocal range at its best. Expect raucous rhythms, angry lyrics and a hell of a performance. The Cluny, June 11, £8, thecluny.com

Razor-sharp wit and cutting comedic pace are the order of the day at The Stand as one of the best female stand-ups on the circuit heads to Toon.

Zoe Lyons has everything from theatre credits and radio shows to festivals and TV appearances under her belt, and a host of awards to her name. A witty and confident performer, her snappy delivery and fierce comebacks make her new show Mustard Cutter a real must-see.The Stand, June 1, £13, thestand.co.uk

I’M READING...

PHOEBE DODD, 19STUDENT, NEWCASTLE

I’ve just finished Philip Roth’s Nemesis, which is part of his short story collection. It explores the effect

of a 1944 polio epidemic on the Newark Jewish community; it’s really macabre but has humour too.

GEMMA LITTLEFAIR, 29, GOSFORTH

I’ve just finished reading Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s ‘Learned’ by Lena

Dunham. It’s a witty take on 20- something life and is something most girls should read.

MIRKL GROSSE-BORDEWECK, 21 STUDENT, GERMANY

I’m reading The Establishment: And How They Get Away With It by the left wing journalist Owen Jones. He points out

problems with the political system and the way things are really being run.

Brendan O’Carroll’s uproariously funny family will take to the road this month, bringing Mrs Brown’s Boys to life on the big stage.

Mrs Brown heads the show as familiar faces from the hit TV show tread the boards in what’s bound to be a hilarious, rude and riotous live show. A must for those who love a little naughtiness. Metro Radio Arena June 9-13 from £22.50, metroradioarena.co.uk

Revealing surprising new uses for the humble shopping trolley, Norwegian artist Ida Ekblad’s sculptures now on show at BALTIC were originally conceived as part of a stage set for Constellations 2012, a play by British writer Nick Payne.

For this show, the artist gives supermarket trollies new life with the addition of found materials, signifying a restless energy which is arguably echoed in the fact that Ekblad herself regularly shifts between media such as sculpture and painting in her work.BALTIC, until August 31, free, balticmill.com

ROOF TERRACES

ROOF TERRACES

ON A HIGHIf 2014 was the year of the courtyard, 2015 is turning out to be the year of the roof terrace, with several new ones in Toon and plenty more getting a makeover to ensure they hit the heights.

From the second floor suntrap to the urban outdoors, all possess the potential for a great view, and The Botanist’s magical new space, complete with twinkling lights and various flora and fauna, surely counts as having the most awe-inspiring panorama from its vantage point overlooking Grey’s Monument.

A rival for the view at The Botanist is presented by the Quayside vista from the Pitcher & Piano’s lofty terrace, where you can perch yourself above the parading masses and watch the world go by.

If you’d prefer to be closer to the action, The Bridge Tavern’s terrace is directly under the Tyne Bridge. A sail-like cover protects you from the elements as you lounge on Chesterfield-style sofas and enjoy posh pub grub and proper beer.

The Vermont Hotel’s Sky Lounge & Garden is only available for private hire or to the privileged few attending special ticketed events, and you can see why they’d want to keep it to themselves; hedged as it is in comfort with an unrivalled view

CLAIRE DUPREE TAKES A TOUR OF THE TOON’S BEST ROOF TERRACES. CHEERS!

over the entire city, it’s a special place indeed.

Not far from The Vermont’s classy ambience, a unique view awaits at Alvinos. The trendy bar and eatery sports graffiti artwork, squishy red leather banquet seating and mini bay trees. The comic book-style drinks menu has a plethora of delights, including alcoholic slushes for summer.

Another small but perfectly formed terrace perches atop The Forth’s back staircase. With big tables, bench seating, stools and twinkly lighting, it’s a popular spot with a great atmosphere.

Not far from the merriment and mayhem of the Diamond Strip, Tokyo offers relaxed sophistication and urban chic where you can settle down, mojito in hand, to enjoy ambient sounds and mood lighting.

A hop, skip and jump from Central Station takes you to the recently refurbished Telegraph’s outdoor terrace with plentiful picnic tables, wet weather cover, cosy patio heating and a fabulous view of the ancient city walls.

Speaking of heritage, you can get among some true Geordie culture on The Strawberry’s covered terrace, complete with big screens to watch every match, a bar serving two-pint pots and a view of St James’ Park. Paradise!
