Finally, spring has arrived! We have some fun things to tell you about. Our Senior Picnic is happening on May 30th and you can expect lots of vendors, bingo, photo booth, fund raiser (raffle) for KVSS’s programs and services-Christmas in July, as well as items being raffled “that day”, lots of great food and music by Southern Cookin’!

On a sad note, we lost one of our long time volunteers, Dorothy King. Many of you may remember, Dorothy was featured on the front of the Life section of the Gazette, zip-lining at 90 years old! She also participated in our fashion show a few years back. Dorothy was a gracious lady and she will be missed! Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family!

In cleaning out some of my mother’s boxes, I came across this poem that was written by my grandfather, Emery Elbert Flint’s brother, Fletcher Ezikiel Flint, who was from Rainelle, WV:

They Say I am Growing OldI have heard them tell it times untold in language plain and bold,

But I am NOT growing old. This frail old shell in which I dwell is growing old, I know full well,

But I am NOT growing old. What if my hair is turning gray? Gray hair is honorable, they say. What if my eyesight’s growing dim? I still can see to follow HIM.Who sacrificed His life for me upon the cross of Calvary.

What should I care if Time’s old plow has left the furrows on my brow?Another house not made by hand awaits me in the Glory Land. What though I falter in my walk? What though my tongue refuse to talk?I still can tread the narrow way; I still can watch and praise and pray.

My hearing may not be as keen as in the past it may have been;Still I can hear my Savior say in whispers soft, “This is the Way.”The outward man, do what I can to lengthen out this life’s short span,Shall perish and return to dust, as everything in nature must.

The inward man, the scriptures say, is growing stronger every day. Then how can I be growing old, when safe within my Savior’s fold.Ere long my soul shall fly away and leave this tenement of clay? This robe of flesh I’ll drop, and rise to seize the everlasting prize.

I’ll meet you on the streets of GoldAnd prove that I’m NOT growing old.

Christmas in JulyKVSS Annual Fundraiser

A new twist to our fund raising efforts at Kanawha Valley Senior Services, is our Christmas in July raffle! We want you to join in our fun and help our cause! We are selling raffle tickets at $10 per ticket to help support all of our senior programs- in home services and congregate and in-home delivered meals to seniors throughout Kanawha County. Our funding has not changed since 2008, so it has not changed with the cost of living and minimum wage increases. Consequently, we do not have enough funding to provide all the services that are needed. So, we came up with a creative and fun way to raise money- we need our community support to achieve our goal (or exceed) of $10,000.

We have 25 wonderful prizes, baskets, gift certificates and more. We are raffling off these prizes the first 25 days of July 2018- our 25 Days of Christmas in July! We are selling tickets NOW and will continue through July 24th. The more tickets you purchase, the better your chances to win over those 25 days! We hope you will be a part of this special fund raiser. For a list of the daily prizes, visit our website at kvss.org or stop in and ask for a list!

Older Americans Month 2018: Engage at Every Age

Across the country, older Americans – a rapidly growing population – are taking part in activities that promote wellness and social connection. They are sharing their wisdom and experience with future generations, and they are giving back to enrich their communities. They’re working and volunteering, mentoring and learning, leading and engaging.

For 55 years, Older Americans Month (OAM) has been observed to recognize older Americans and their contributions to our communities. Led by the Administration for Community Living’s Administration on Aging, every May offers opportunity to hear from, support, and celebrate our nation’s elders. This year’s OAM theme, “Engage at Every Age,” emphasizes the importance of being active and involved, no matter when or where you are in life. You are never too old (or too young) to participate in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

It is becoming more apparent that remaining socially engaged can improve the quality of life for older adults. KVSS will use OAM 2018 to focus on how older adults in our area are engaging with friends and family, and through various community activities. KVSS will celebrate “Engage at Any Age” with a special meal on May 16, 2018. We encourage you to get involved in some of our programs and activities throughout the month!

Join KVSS in celebrating by participating the Selfie Challenge! We want to see how you’re engaging. Simply take a selfie (or have someone take your photo) send it through our website kvss.org.

KVSS is a non-profit 501(c)3organization created in the early 1970’s to provide programs of service to individuals in the scenic and historic Kanawha Valley of West Virginia. The mission of Kanawha Valley Senior Services (KVSS) helps seniors age successfully. Programs range from assisting elders and veterans in their own home to the adult Alzheimer Day Center to helping well-elderly with socialization and preventive measures. Our organization offers an ever-growing array of senior activities such as employment, nutrition, shopping, quilting, sewing, painting, poetry, computer lessons, Tai Chi, Healthy Steps Class Zumba, Bingo, Big-Screen Movie Days, life-enrichment and continuing education courses, gardening, cooking classes and so much more. KVSS coordinates and cooperates with federal, state, and county agencies to assure that health, educational, recreational, intergenerational and economic benefits are readily available to senior citizens. The organization is passionately dedicated to the mission of making the broad spectrum of services happen. Truly our success is possible because of past contributions, donations, grants, and fundraisers—not to mention the wonderful host of staff and clients. KVSS is funded by Bureau of Senior Services, WV DHHR, WV Division of Transit, Metro AAA, The Kanawha County Commission, private donations, fundraisers & grants.
