METALLO:
Describe the structure of metals (D)
Explain how metals form bonds (C)
Explain why the properties of a metal occur (B)
Use the model of metallic bonding to account for the properties of metals (A/A*)
Starter
Do metals have high or low melting points ?
What does this tell you about the bonding of the atoms ?
5, 4, 3, 2, 15 Metal symbols
6 Metal properties
7 Magnetic elements
8 Metals used in jewellery
1 Metal that is liquid at room temperature
Metal / Non-metal = Ionic
Non-metal / Non-metal = Covalent
Metal / Metal = Metallic
Metal crystals
Metals are made of grains.
These grains order themselves to form metal crystals.
Steel dipped in zinc is galvanised steel and the crystals are clearly visible.
Metallic Bonding
Fixed metal ions
Sea of delocalised electrons
More electrons in the outer shell = More electrons in the sea
This makes the bond even stronger.
The metals will have a higher melting point.

Metallic Bonding
Metals are ductile and malleable because the metal ions are free to slide on each other in the sea of delocalised electrons.
Growing Silver Crystals
A coil of copper wire is placed into a solution of silver nitrate.
The copper displaces the silver.
The silver crystals grown on the wire.
AgNO3 + Cu Cu(NO3)2 + Ag
