A Walk through Alice Hamilton’s Century 11:30-1:30 Alice Hamilton was an American physician and social reformer

physician and scientist in the exciting days of the new medicine
at the turn of the 20th century; the development of her career as one of the founders of Occupational Medicine in the brutal
industrial world of her time; her lifelong commitment to social reform and her involvement with Jane Addams and the Hull-
House network of social activists; her work as a peace advocate;

TUESDAY A Look Back at the 1950's 9:00-11:00
Ahhh, the good old days when we ducked under our desks,
covered our eyes, and were told not to look at the bright light as
the bomb exploded. It was a time when we read or heard about
Communist spies. On the other hand, there was Rock ‘n Roll,
dice dangling from our rear view mirrors and even hula girls
bouncing around in the back window of the car. Want to hear more about that era, join us for a trip back in time. Expect to
laugh, share, and have fun. Dr. Lloyd C. Petersen

Land Acts 11:30-1:30 Acts of creation are ordinarily reserved for gods and poets, but
humbler folk may circumvent this restriction if they know how.
To plant a pine, for example, one need be neither god nor poet;
one need only own a good shovel,” writes Aldo Leopold in A
Sand County Almanac, his best-known work. Over a long career in forestry and wildlife management, Leopold developed what
he came to call a land ethic, a broad approach to understanding
and guiding humans’ relationship with the natural world. This
course will use writing by Leopold and other authors, along
with class discussions with people who work in conservation
and ecology, to explore what having a land ethic and being a
citizen scientist mean in Southwest Minnesota in 2019.
Dr. Will Thomas
