You are about to take part in a tradition at Southwest Minnesota StateUniversity. Mustang “Gold Rush” Days symbolizes the start of youracademic and social quest for success. A “Gold Rush” by definition is:

1: a rush to newly discovered goldfields in pursuit of riches2: the headlong pursuit of sudden wealth in a new or lucrative field3: to lavish attention on4: to secure a pledge of membership5: a thronging of people usually to a new place in search of wealth

Our four-day orientation program will provide sessions to acclimateyou to our student services and the guest speakers will give you adviceabout how to be successful in a college environment. The variousactivities during the days and nights will give you the opportunity tosmile, laugh, and have fun with your fellow classmates. This is thebeginning of a new chapter in your life, and we want to start it off witha BANG!

REGISTRATION FOR FALL CLASSESAlthough many of you have registered for your fall classes, some have not.Information regarding August Registration on Wednesday, August 21, willbe mailed to students prior to the program. You will need to RSVP byvisiting www.SMSU.edu. If you have questions about registration, pleasecontact the Office of Admission at 1-800-642-0684 ext. 6286.

FINANCIAL AID INFORMATIONCheck the status of your financial aid via e-services at www.SMSU.edu. Ifyour award has not been finalized, your loan is not certified, or you havequestions, please contact the Financial Aid Office at 1-800-642-0684 or(507) 537-6281. The Financial Aid Office is open Monday - Friday from8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATIONVERIFICATION: If you plan to work on campus while attendingSouthwest Minnesota State University, regulations require you to presentyour original social security card and a photo ID to your employer to verifyyour eligibility to work in the United States. Please be sure to bring thesedocuments with you when you come to Southwest so your payments are notdelayed.

DIRECT DEPOSIT: All students working on campus will receive paymentby direct deposit into their bank account (checking or savings). Enroll indirect deposit online through your e-services account.

IMPORTANT PAYMENT DATESAug. 5 Students must have met the minimum payment criteria.

Minimum payment criteria can be viewed at www.SMSU.edu/PaymentPolicy.

Aug. 26 First day of classes.Aug. 31 Financial Aid will be applied to fall semester bills.Sept. 6 Financial Aid Refunds:

Move-In Day 2013 is scheduled for Thursday, August 22nd.the residence Life office (naoutha) will be open forresidence hall check-in on thursday from 8:00 a.m. -10:00 p.m.

All students must check in by naoutha which is locatedalong Birch street across from the Foundation residenceApartments. Look for the flags!

BARNES & NOBLEThe Barnes & Noble Campus Store will be openextended hours during Mustang Gold Rush Daysand the first week of classes. Below is a list of thetimes they will be open for you. Don’t forget tobring your class schedule if you’re planning topurchase or rent your books!

some things you mAy wAnt to keep in mind:√ to hang your wall decorations, use only painter’s tape,command hooks, or sticky tack. do NOT use masking tape,nails, or duct tape.

√ talk with your roommate(s) about the bigger items thatyou may want in your room (ex. television, refrigerator,microwave, etc.) to avoid duplicate items.

√ the mattresses provided are 36”x80” so you should bringseveral sets of twin eXtrA Long sheets.

√ in each room you will find a bed, desk, desk chair, and acloset per student. Also included are internet jacks (2) and awastebasket. some rooms are also equipped with hutches.

When does my Fall Semester bill have to be paid?A: students must have met the minimum payment criteria by August 5, 2013.minimum payment criteria can be viewed at www.smsu.edu/paymentpolicy .All fall semester accounts are due in full on september 30, 2013.

If I have been awarded work-study, how do I go about finding a job oncampus?A: Campus job openings will be posted on our smsu website under studentemployment. it is up to you to contact the departments or areas in which youare interested and ask if they have any jobs available.

How do I get paid for the work-study hours I work?A: you will receive a direct deposit every two weeks for the number of hoursworked. most students work an average of 8-10 hours per week and get paid$8.00 per hour. All student workers are paid via direct deposit.

As a student, when can I pick up my Stafford Loan Check/excess Financial Aid?A: All financial aid funds will be applied first to the charges on your account.Any funds remaining will be directly deposited into your bank account(savings or checking) on september 6, 2013. if your refund is printed bycheck, it will be mailed from smsu on september 6, 2013. students areencouraged to fill out the direct deposit form online through e-services.

When should I buy my books and how much will they cost?A: the Campus store will be open during gold rush days for new students topurchase their books. students may purchase new or used books from thebookstore, and some books may be available to rent. Books generally cost between $600-$800/semester.

Can I change my meal plan if it is not right for me?A: yes. meal plan changes for Fall semester may be made through monday,september 9, 2013. meal plan changes for spring semester can be made thelast two weeks of Fall semester through the first two weeks of spring classes.these requests need to be submitted in writing to the dining services officeacross from the residential restaurant on the first floor of the student Center.

When do meal plans start?A: meal plans begin thursday, August 22, for the noon meal. meals from yourdining plan can be used in the residential restaurant located in the studentCenter. the meal plan week starts on saturday and runs through Friday. yourmeal plan will start over each week. your meals do not carry over from weekto week.

How do I use my Mustang Money?A: mustang money can be used just like CAsh to purchase anything at theBarnes & noble Campus store, the mustang Zone, all campus food venuesincluding Java City and mustang express convenience stores, even snackvending machines. mustang money also gets your laundry done in the reshalls and increases your print quota at the trC. mustang money is the easyway to make purchases on campus without carrying cash.

Do I have to leave the Residence Halls during breaks or can I stay in myroom?A: the only time the residence halls close is at the end of fall semester indecember. the halls are closed for approximately one month while studentsare on semester break. interim housing is available for free, but students mustsign up at the residence Life office to stay in their rooms over break.

9:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. “SEX SIGNALS”SMSU TheatreBlending a unique combination of improvisational comedy, education and audience participation, "sex signals" provides a provocative, in-your-face look at issues surrounding dating, sex, and date rape on college campuses. through the use of humor, the show explores how mixed messages, gender role stereotypes, and unrealistic fantasies contribute to misunderstandings between the sexes. students are engaged in a candid discussion on dating and the realities of date rape as they are challenged to provide solutions that will better improve communications in interpersonal relationships.

Green Lottime to get dirty! mud Volleyball is sponsored by the mustang maniacs. sign up in the student Center before 10:30 a.m. saturday and be at the mud Volleyball courts by 11:30 a.m. Bring your own team or we’ll help youfind one! Complimentary shower provided by the marshall Fire department.
