VIII. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Fund Raising (Tara)
Tara will be passing fund raising on to Jan. She mentioned that we may need to look into this with greater urgency if we need to start paying $400 room charge for events. ASU is now charging $400 to use rooms in their facilities for events. Tara was made aware of this when she was reserving the room for the annual event. This additional charge would eat into the budget for the annual event. After some discussion a motion was made and seconded to pay the $400 for the room charge outside of the money budgeted for the annual event. Tara also mentioned that perhaps we need to look at raising our membership dues. It was generally agreed that we would not raise membership dues.
Annual Meeting (Tara) The annual meeting will be held on April 4, 2019 in the Cronkite Building, 2nd
floor. Dean Chris Callahan will be the guest speaker. Tara is working on getting a tour of KAET after the meeting. A motion was made and seconded to pay air fare and 1 day per diem reimbursement of actual expenses to our scholarship recipient (who lives in San Diego) not to exceed $250 so she can attend the annual meeting. .
Annual Report (Tara) Annual report writeups should be sent to Barry and a copy to Tara. These are due by March 15.

Note: Since membership enrollment forms are mailed in May, we begin processing them, with associated dues and donations, before the start of the membership/fiscal year. Therefore it is not possible to use these counts to determine the correct dollar value of membership dues in the current fiscal year.

Report on Pyle Senior Center
Jean Duncan and Barry McNeill looked into using the Pyle Center for some of ASURAs larger social events, e.g., Meet and Greet, Holiday Potluck. The following was found:
1. There are a number of rooms; Jean checked out the rooms and found the Mult-purpose room to be perfect for our events.
2. ASURA qualifies for the non-profit organization low rental rate 3. Except for a few times on Monday and Friday the rooms are not available as they
are book with a variety of senior activities. The exceptions are 1-5 on Monday and a few 1-5 dates on Friday.
4. There are some slots available on Saturday.
As a result of these inquiries we recommend that the Pyle Center not be used at this time. While there are some slots available for the Multi-purpose room, the Meet and Greet and Holiday Potluck events are lunch type events and starting at 1:00 pm is just too late. Moving these events to Saturday does not appeal.

From: Richard J. Jacob
Date: 11 February 2019
Subject: Report on Arizona State Retirement System, Board of Trustees Meeting, 25 January, 2019
The Board of Trustees of the Arizona State Retirement System met at 8:30 a.m. in the Board Room on the above date. Membership of the Board still stands at 7 with 2 vacancies yet to be filled.
Public meetings of the Board have been reduced to six per year. Agendas have also been slimmed somewhat, with a focus on strategic items. Other than matters of internal operation, the following items are noteworthy to retired members of ASRS:
1. Fund Performance: the total Fund value tracks closely with the investment market indicators with a current market value of about $38,000,000,000. The fiscal year yield to date is at about 0%.
2. Ms. Jessica Thomas reported on the current ASRS legislative activity. All submitted legislation is initiated by ASRS itself and refers to definitions of employment, compensation, unfunded liability, etc., some with an eye hypothetically toward departure of certain employers from the system. No other substantive issues are pending. According to Director Paul Matson, this is not a pension year in the legislature.
In addition, I attended on Tuesday, February 5, a briefing of legislators on ASRS and defined benefit pension systems sponsored by the Arizona Retirement Security Coalition and featuring ASRS Director Paul Matson and national pension organization figures. Several legislators attended, but I believe all were friendly to pensions. I learned nothing new at this briefing.
