    (SeeEndNote Webfor instructions on using that version)

    EndNote is software that can organize, store, and input citations into Word documents to helpyou with your research. The College of St. Scholastica has a site license which offers two optionsfor you to access EndNote and you can either pick one or use both as the situation warrants.

    How to Get EndNote Download

    Click on the EndNote tab at the top.

    1. Next, you will need to get EndNote either by signing up for the web version (you must beon the Duluth campus to do this) or installing the download version onto your personalcomputer either for Windows or for Macintosh.

    To decide between the two versions, consider these questions:Use EndNote Web if you answer yes to the following questions:- Do you not want to worry about downloading the software onto your computer?- Do you want to be able to access EndNote via the web from any computer anywhere?- Are you just wanting something that can help you correctly format your citations for yourpaper?

    Use EndNote Download if you answer yes to the following questions:- Are you comfortable downloading the software on to your personal computer?

    - Do you want to be able to use EndNote without being connected to the Internet?- Do you want to use EndNote for a more in-depth, long term project and store and organizeyour research?

    2. Once you have decided which version (it is possible to do both), click on the appropriatelink and use your username and password you have to access your Groupwise email.

    How to Set Up EndNote

    Once you download EndNote, you can open the program by selecting it from the list ofprograms in the start menu on your computer. There is also a 96 page manual in pdf form formore complete instructions.

    *NOTE: If you are using EndNote in the computer labs on campus, you can

    skip the download steps and go right to the Start menu and select EndNotefrom the Non-metered Apps.

    When on campus, you will be given a choice to open an EndNote Web account. If this issomething you are interested in, you must do this on the Duluth campus.

    Once you have made your choice about EndNote Web, you will be prompted about gettingstarted with EndNote. Your citations will be housed in a library. You may wish to have separatelibraries for each assignment, class, or research project or just keep all your citations in onelibrary. Initially you will need to create a new EndNote library and decide what it is going to be

    called and where it is going to be saved on your computer by clicking on the Create a newEndNote library option. You will need to choose a name for your library and type the name inthe field, and selecting the location. Then click the Save button.

    Here is what a blank library looks like. The first thing you want to do is select the style youwant your citations to be in. The four most commonly used styles at CSS are MLA forhumanities such as English; Chicago for history; AMA for physical therapy, and APA fornursing, management, psychology, education, and social work, etc. Check with your professoras to what format you should use for your assignment.

    To change the citation style, click on the pull-down menu that is defaulted to say Annotated andclick on Select Another Style

    Use the scroll bar on the right to move alphabetically through the list to select the style you

    would like. Click on the style you wish to add and then click on the Choose button. That stylewill now be added to your list. At any time you can click on Select Another Style to pick adifferent one from the list. You can also change your citations from one style to another bysimply clicking on that style name.

    Here is what a library with references in it looks like:

    Click on a reference to highlight it and below you will see what it looks like formatted. Doubleclick on the reference to get a pop-up window with the various fields of the reference.

    Entering Citations into EndNote

    Next, you need to start putting your citations into EndNote. There are two ways to do this.

    1. The first way is to type or copy and paste the information into the fields so that EndNotecan format them properly.

    1a. Select References from the toolbar and then click on New Reference.

    1b. Select what type of source it is from the pull-down list such as journal article, book,encyclopedia, web page, etc. Then enter in the information on each aspect of your source. Leavewhatever you dont have information for blank. Most times that will be okay as it wont be apart of the citation anyway. At any time you can get back to this window by double clicking onthe reference in your EndNote library.

    1c. Once you are done filling out your sources information, click on the grey X in the upperright hand corner of the window. This will close the window and add your citation to thelibrary.

    2. The second way to put a citation into EndNote is by importing it from a database. See theinstructions forExporting Citations from Databases into EndNotefor how to do this for manydatabases the Library subscribes to.

    One example is if you are using an Ebsco database such as Academic Search Premier, you canadd articles you want to your folder (see theAcademic Search Premier tutorialfor moreinformation on how to do this) and then click on your folder. Once your folder is open, checkthe boxes before the citations you want to put in EndNote. Then, click on the paper icon withgreen arrow.

    Hints: Fill in thesources informationas close to the citationstyle as possible

    For authors put Last

    name, First name. Ifyou are using APA,abbreviate theauthors first andmiddle names.

    For titles put all theletters in lower caseexcept for propernouns like countries

    2a. Next, click on the circle for Direct Export to EndNote and then the Save button.

    2b. Then, select your reference library by going to where you have saved your EndNote libraryand when you click on Open, the citations will be automatically added.

    Each database does this a little differently, but most do have this capability. Ask a librarian formore information.

    Attaching PDF of Full-text of Article to Reference in EndNote

    It is possible to attach the full-text of your articles right into EndNote if it is available to you as apdf document. This makes it very convenient to have both your reference, information on thearticle, and the full-text of the article all in one place. You first want to export your citation so

    you have it in your EndNote library. From the database, open the pdf file and save it where itwill be easy for you to find such as on the desktop.

    Next, in your EndNote library, click on your reference that you wish to attach the articles pdffile to and then under References on the top tool bar, select File Attachments and thenAttach File

    Find where you saved the file such as on the desktop, click on the file name and then click onOpen.

    You will now see a little paperclip next to the reference indicating that a file has been attachedto it.

    You can open up the pdf file when you double click on the reference and scroll down in itsentry to where it says File Attachments. Just click on the pdf icon to open it.

    Working with EndNote in Word 2007Once you have your citations in your EndNote library, you can import them into a Worddocument. In order to do this though, you must have your EndNote library open. The first timeyou open up Word after having installed EndNote, a wizard will take you through the steps toadd an EndNote tab that looks like this:

    From left to right this is what each button does:

    Paper with Magnifying glass will search for a citation in your EndNote library, click ondropdown arrow to insert a note, insert a selected citation, of find a figure.

    Red EN goes to EndNote Pencil with Paper edit your citations Pencil and three lines allows you to edit a library reference in EndNote Style click on dropdown arrow to change the citation style Update Citations and Bibliography formats your document to the citation style rules Convert Citations and Bibliography allows you to unformat a reference dont click on this

    as it changes how your citation is formatted. Also, click on dropdown arrow to choose fromother options including convert to plain text and convert citations from Word 2007 toEndNote.

    When you are all done typing your paper and adding your in-text or parenthetical citations,then click on the Update Citations and Bibliography button on the EndNote toolbar and this willensure your citations are properly formatted for the citation style you are using.

    THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

    EndNote does make mistakes, so you will need to change them. Remember a computer onlymatches, it does not think. EndNote still requires you to proofread it. Use the Citation HelpLibGuides found on the Research Tools tab on the Librarys homepage, published handbooks, or

    ask a Librarian for more help.

    To change citations or references in your bibliography, just click on the text. It will turn grayand then you can make any changes.

    Double Space Your Bibliography

    As you are typing your paper and adding your in-text citation, notice that the bibliography thatis being built a couple spaces below your paper and it is single spaced. It will look similar tothis:

    To make changes follow these steps:

    1. At the conclusion of your paper put a page break in, which will shift your bibliography to anew page. This can be done by clicking on the control button (Ctrl) and Enter button at the

    same time.

    2. Type and center the wordReferences at the top of the page. (NOTE: If you have only onecitation it should beReference instead.)

    3. Click on the arrow in the lower right corner at the bottom of the Bibliography section.

    4. ClickLayout tab to change your bibliography so it is double spaced. Click Ok.
