• Something you can “do”

• They can be something you can’t actually see.

• They help tell us when

State of being Verbs

• Tell us that something IS; that something exists.

• Can be the main verb or a helping verb

• Also help show us when

State of being Verbs

• There are EIGHT

• am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been

• Annie is a wild, wonderful, bouncing baby bear.

Helping Verbs

• Used with another verb to help (duh!)

• If you see an “ing” ending, it may have a helping verb.

–I am running.

Helping Verbs

• Sometimes “not” separates the helping verb from the main verb.–Sue is not eating.

Helping Verbs

• There can be as many as three helping verbs in addition to the main verb.–The child must have been

looking for his coat.

How can you tell a helping verb from a state-of being verb?
