BALMORAL

A balmoral is a hat that has its origins from 16th century Scottishhistory. The hat is named after the Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Abalmoral is traditionally made of soft wool and features a pompom ontop, a flat crown and a checkered band. The checkered band istypically white and red.

A beret is a round hat that is typically made of soft wool. Although thecrown is round, it is usually pushed to one side. The beret, which hasFrench origins, is worn both by everyday people and those in themilitary. Nearly every culture has a beret-like hat.From colorful knit berets to standard military berets.Both men and women can wear a beret.

A baseball cap is perhaps the most popular type of hat in the UnitedStates. It is worn by men and women of all ages and is recognizableby its extended, firm and curved peak. The rest of the hat typically fitssnugly against the head. The baseball cap was first used for the sportof baseball but is now worn by people all over the world as a casualhat.

BEANIE

A beanie is a hat specially designed to keep your head warm duringthe winter months. While there are different types of beanies such aswoven beanies and knit beanies the main characteristic of a beanie isa hat that is placed relatively firmly against your head in an attempt totrap the heat.

BOONIE

A boonie hat has a stiff, wide brim. It is similar to a bucket hat but thebrim is stiffer. Boonie hats are most common with military personnel,which is why most boonie hats are camouflage. Boonie hats werefirst used by the United States military during the Vietnam War.

BOWLER HAT OR DERBYA bowler is a sturdy hat with a rounded crown. The brim of the hatextends out a few inches and is similarly rounded. The origins of thehat date back to approximately 1850. The bowler hat got its name fromthe makers of the hat Thomas Bowler and William Bowler. Historiansbelieve the bowler hat was created as a stylish way to protect the headwhen on horseback.Charlie Chaplin, as well as Laurel and Hardy, were know for theirbowler hats. In the United States, a bowler hat is known as a "derby,"while in England it's called a bowler.

Bucket hats are typically made of cotton and feature a wide, droopybrim that slopes downward torn the eyes. Many people wear buckethats for both fashion and practical purposes for sun protection.

CLOCHE HAT

A cloche hat is a bell-shaped hat this was popular during the 1920s. Itfeatures a narrow brim, a rounded crown and soft material. A clochehat is typically only worn by women. The word "cloche" comes fromthe French word meaning "bell". Although it was most popular 80years ago, cloche hats are currently getting more and more stylish inrecent years.

COWBOY HAT

The cowboy hat is a fashionable and functional hat. It is traditionallyworn by farmers, ranchers and cowboys for its protection againstnatures elements. It is also quite stylish.Many hat companies offer cowboy hats in different colors, sizes andfabrics. The famous "ten gallon" cowboy hat was the traditional attire ofMexican nobility.

FEDORA

A fedora is made of soft felt and is most recognizable by its pinchedfront and the crease that travels lengthwise on the crown. The brimextends out and is sometimes bent down over the eyes. Most fedorahats feature a hat band.Fedoras first appeared in the late 1800s, however this style of hat didntbecome popular until the 1930s. Still popular today, fedoras are oftenassociated in modern times with wealth and class. Men ranging fromHumphrey Bogart to the fictional Indiana Jones are known for theirfedora hats.

FEZ

A fez is a hat that is the shape of an abridged cone and is mostcommonly red. The hat is also usually made of felt and doesnt have abrim.Dating back to the Ottoman Empire, the fez hat has Greek origins.While it isnt worn much anymore, it does have a history of use incertain religions, governments and militaries. Today, its foundpredominantly in the eastern hemisphere in locations such asSouthern Asia. In America, the Shriners traditionally wear a red fez.

FLOPPY HAT

Floppy hats are one of the most classic accessory staples of thesummer. A retro influenced style that was common in the '70s, the widebrims on floppy hats offer maximum protection from the sun. Straw isthe standard material for floppy hats, but today's selections offer awide variety of fabric, such as canvas, felt or cotton.Floppy hats may be popular during the summer, but they can be easilycarried into the fall season if they are made with certain materials(such as wool) and colors (such as brown).

MAO CAP

The Mao Cap. Modelled after the cap worn by Mao Tse Tung, long timeCommunist Ruler of China, this cap is now back, in the streets and partof the urban scene. Made of soft strong cotton canvas it has a leatherstrap with a brass buckle in back to adjust the size and fits up to a 7 1/4or a tight 7 3/8. Similar to the military fatigue cap, it sports a widervisor and a shorter slightly wider crown

NEWSBOY CAP OR GATSBY

The newsboy cap is a hat for casual occasions. It has a round, puffybody and is marked with its trademark button on top. These capscome in tweed, wool, leather and a variety of other fabrics. Thenewsboy cap was a hit during the turn of the century and has madeits way back into fashion for both men and women in recent years.

PANAMA HAT

The Panama hat originates from Ecuador. It is traditionally made usingthe Toquilla straw plant. The hats were originally all made in Ecuadorand shipped through the Panama Canal to the rest of the world.The hat became popular in America after Teddy Roosevelt beganwearing it. They are great for hot climates and complement dress suits.

PORKPIE HAT

The porkpie hat is part of the classic attire of American jazz and bluesmusicians. It has a short and indented flat top. The porkpie style wasat one time prevalent in the UK, Jamaica, Australia and New Guinea.Women of the 19th century often wore this type of hat as well.This hat was named after pork pies because they share a similarshape.

TOP HAT

The top hat was popular amongst men of the 19th and early 20thcenturies. Its trademark quality is its tall and flat crown. It has a largebrim and men wore it more as a status symbol than for sun protection.The most expensive top hats were made from beaver fur. AbrahamLincoln was the first American to popularize the top hat. In moderntimes, top hats are usually worn only with costumes and occasionallywith formal tuxedos.

TRAPPER HAT

A trapper hat, sometimes simply known as a fur hat, is a type of winteraccessory ideal for keeping warm in the cold weather. This type of hatis designed to not only keep the head cosy and warm, but the ears aswell. A feature that is unique to this accessory is the extra fabric, orear flaps, on either side of the hat. These are specifically made tokeep the ears warm, offering maximum protection from the cold. Theyeliminate the need for both a hat and earmuffs, both of which areconsidered to be essential winter accessories. Trapper hats are alsotypically lined with fur or faux fur, making them even more ideal for thewinter months.

The trilby hat uses soft felt material and a narrow brim to complementits sharp intended crown. The materials used to make the hat rangefrom wool, tweed and rabbit hair. These elegant hats originated inLondon.Notable celebrities and musicians such as Mos Def, Michael Jackson,Justin Timberlake, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt have made the trilbypopular in Americas pop culture. A trilby hat is very similar to afedora but normally has a slightly shorter brim.
