BereavementHave you suffered a bereavement recently or even years ago? Whether expected or not, the death of someone close can affect you in many ways – emotionally and physically. There is no set time limit for ‘getting over’a loss. Grief is a very individual experience and can be a very lonely one. If you feel that it would be helpfulto talk confidentially to a trained bereavement counsellor then please contact Beth on 222193

LOST AND FOUND IN TRANSMISSION?

It would have happened anyway, even without COVID-19. The Church’s dailylectionary, the Bible readings set for use during the latter weeks of Lent, leading intoHoly Week, Passover and Easter, took us through the story of the 10 plagues of Egypt.I couldn’t quite believe it. Whatever the substance of the history, mythology andtheology of the ancient story of the Israelites being delivered from slavery, the plot andtypology resonated somewhat with the global struggles for deliverance. Perhaps by thetime this is published in May we will be through the bitterest times, but signs are it maybe many months before the ‘promised land’ of a new normality comes into view. Buteven when milk and honey is consistently available again on the shelves of food stores, many of us will look back with solemnity, lamentation and grief at the journey we havemade and the losses ripped from us.I cannot say much now, but I want to pay a brief tribute here to our dear friend IvanSaunders, who died on Saturday 4th April after being overwhelmed by the effects of thecoronavirus. Ivan was husband to Julie, who died in October, father to Rachel, Hazeland Rebecca, and a grandfather. He was also for many years Tower Captain at StMary’s Church and devoted to church bell ringing. Due to the restrictions on theattendance at funerals (Ivan’s was on 29 April) I very much hope that a celebration ofIvan’s life can be organised at a later date. Surely there will be some very special bellringing. In her televised address to the nation on 6 April, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth offereda hopeful prospect: “While we have faced challenges before, this one is different. Thistime we join with all nations across the globe in a common endeavour, using the greatadvances of science and our instinctive compassion to heal. We will succeed – and thatsuccess will belong to every one of us. We should take comfort that while we may havemore still to endure, better days will return: we will be with our friends again; we will bewith our families again; we will meet again.”During March the Archbishops required that churches must be closed for both privateprayer and public worship. Expecting this development, I had already begun movingthe bales remaining from the Scrap Wood Crib in the churchyard. Repurposing them, Iconstructed a straw chapel at the Vicarage and used it to offer regular prayers,‘live-streamed’ on Facebook. This was a technological facility I had barely realisedexisted, let alone ever used. Meanwhile our Sunday Club continued to meet usingZoom and I even heard that some people were using devices known as telephones tospeak more regularly and support each other. Early indications are that an effectiveway to increase and widen the congregation is to close the church and tell people theycan’t attend. ‘Social media platforms’ will perhaps become more of a feature ofcommunal life when we can use the church again. I hope so.

Talking of using the church again, I don’t know when this will be possible. Speculatingis pointless but as Alexander Pope coined, hope springs eternal in the human breast.Back in the autumn last year, before anyone had even heard of coronavirus, I arrangedfor Bishop Jo, the Bishop of Dorking, to visit us at St Mary’s Church at Pentecost on 31May for the 10.30am service. Maybe this will be possible, maybe not. At the time ofwriting, I simply don’t know.In the church there is a list of Vicars. John de Crandall 1289 is first on the list. 5 entrieslater between Hugh de Herlaston 1330 and John Messenger 1359 is a compilers note:‘N.B. Registers 1346-1358 are missing perhaps owing to the “Black Death”.

I wonder what will go missing from these times and what will be found? For Christiansthere is ever a kingdom to seek and its righteousness. Everything else is commentary.

CANCELLATIONS DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUSPlease be aware that both the church and the church rooms are currently closed dueto the coronavirus pandemic. Both our monthly Coffee Shop and the Craft & Chatgroup are temporarily suspended.1st Send (St Mary’s) Scout Group have announced that unfortunately, due to theCoronavirus, this year’s May Fair has been cancelled. Those stall holders who havealready sent money with their Booking Form will be refunded. The Scouts hope to runan event similar to the May Fair later in the summer. Watch out for details.

HUMANITY – J. JohnOn the very first day, God created the cow. He said to the cow, “Today I have createdyou! As a cow, you must go to the field with the farmer all day long. You will work allday under the sun! I will give you a life span of 50 years.”Cow objected. “What? This kind of tough life you want me to live for 50 years? Let mehave 20 years, and the 30 years I’ll give back to you.” So God agreed. On the second day, God created the dog. God said to the dog, “What you aresupposed to do is to sit all day by the door of your house. Any people that come in,you will have to bark at them!” I’ll give you a life span of 20 years.”Dog objected. “What? All day long to sit by the door? No way! I give you back tenyears of my life!” So God agreed. On the third day, God created the monkey. He said to the monkey, “Monkey has toentertain people. You’ve got to make them laugh and do monkey tricks. I’ll give you20 years’ life span.”Monkey objected. “What? Make them laugh? Do monkey faces and tricks? Tenyears will do, and the other ten years I’ll give you back.” So God agreed. On the fourth day, God created man and woman and said to them, “Your job is tosleep, eat, and play. There will be much to enjoy in your life. All you need to do is toenjoy things and do nothing. For this kind of life, I’ll give you 20 years of life span.”The man objected. “What? Such a good life! Eat, play, sleep, do nothing? Enjoy thebest and you expect me to live only for 20 years? No way. Why don’t we make a deal?Since Cow gave you back 30 years, Dog gave you back ten years and Monkey gaveyou back ten years, I will take them from you! That makes my life span 70 years, right?” So God agreed.AND THAT IS WHY..... In our first 20 years, we eat, sleep, play, enjoy the best anddo nothing much. For the next 30 years, we work all day long, suffer and get to supportthe family. For the next ten years, we entertain our grandchildren by making monkeyfaces and monkey tricks. And for the last ten years, we stay at home, sit in front of thedoor and bark at people.

The church has been running a monthly Coffee Shop in the church rooms for 13 years. We were fortunate enough to be able to celebrate our 13th birthday on 16th Marchbefore the lockdown and the inevitable closure of community buildings. As mentioned before, over the 13 years the Coffee Shop has been running an amazingamount of over £26,000 has been raised for charity. All the thank you letters havebeen kept – over 130 of them! – and copies of these are available to view at eachevent.Once we are able to resume meetings we will be continuing to provide a place for thelocal community to enjoy coffee and cake in a warm and friendly atmosphere. This wasthe purpose behind the setting up of the Coffee Shop and still remains our focus today.

CRAFT AND CHATAnother successful venture for the church has been thesetting up of a Craft & Chat group for the local community. This group normally meets on the last Wednesday of eachmonth between 2pm and 4pm in the Church Rooms. It hasproved extremely popular and people have been bringingalong their varying crafts to sit and enjoy a chat with fellowcrafters – and a cup of tea and a biscuit! Again we hope wewill be able to resume meetings as soon as we can.

Gardening notes by Linda DavisGardening can add a much needed sense of normality during these uncertain times. It connects us with the outdoors and the gentle satisfaction of watching things growbrings a unique positivity of hope and expectation. If you do not have a garden, thereare plenty of ways to grow indoors on a sunny windowsill. By May, winter crops andstored produce have all been eaten but very few of this year's crops are ready. Asflower bulbs fade and herbaceous borders grow, it is clear that summer isapproaching. Sowing and planting out can begin and softwood cuttings can be taken. It is also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime. There is plenty to do now, bothfor tasty vegetables to harvest this year and to make your garden your own sanctuaryfor your mental and physical well-being.

Earth-up potatoes by drawing soil around the emerging shoots to form a ridge.Earthing-up will exclude light from tubers preventing them from going green – greentubers are potentially harmful if consumed. Start sowing runner, dwarf and climbingFrench beans. All beans appreciate a rich, deep, well-drained soil in a sunny position,so clear any large stones, and dig in a good amount of compost or well-rottedfarmyard manure to encourage the beans to grow.

Sow quick-growing crops, such as salads, between longer-term residents, such asbrassicas, while they're establishing. Sow courgettes and pumpkins in pots forplanting outdoors next month. Put a small stick by the best polyanthus so afterflowering they can be lifted and divided. The splitting is not done until June, but theplants need to be marked when they are at their best.

Tubs, containers and hanging baskets can be planted up now but keep themprotected until all risk of frost has passed - usually towards the end of the month.Divide hostas as they come into growth. Perennials will be shooting up and tallervarieties may need stakes or supports to help show off their blooms and prevent thembending over or snapping.

(Meetings currently suspended due to the coronavirus situation.)

We can be reached by e-mail [email protected], byphone on 01483 223952 (chairmanRobert Harding-Payne) or by comingalong to our next meeting. We are notexperts, just a bunch of people who enjoytending our gardens and trying newideas. We hold bi-monthly meetings at7.30pm on the first Wednesday ofalternate months at the Church Rooms, with speakers who are experts and teachus something about the art of gardening.

The Penny Black6 May 1840: The Penny Black revolutionisescommunications in BritainRowland Hill had a vision. While a small boy in Kidderminster, he hadwatched in embarrassment as his mother scrabbled for money to paythe postman. By the 1830s, Hill, now a teacher and social reformer, was determined to push through a change that he believed wouldtransform the Post Office into a force for progress: universal pennypostage, paid in advance.

By May 1840, Hill’s scheme was up and running. As he explained, people would provethat they had paid by using “a bit of paper just large enough to bear the stamp, andcovered at the back with a glutinous wash, which the bringer might, by applying a littlemoisture, attach to the back of the letter”. He enlisted the Royal Mint’s chief engraverto create a memorable image – a picture of Queen Victoria. Today we know his creationas the Penny Black. The first stamps went on sale on 1 May, and the system came into operation five dayslater. One schoolboy recalled that he did not “fancy making my mouth a glue pot,” whilethe newssheet The Town ran a saucy poem:“You must kiss our fair Queen,or her pictures, that’s clear.Or the gummy medallionwill never adhere. You will not kiss her hand, you will readily findBut actually kiss little Vicky’s behind.”The Penny Black was an instant hit. Within a week the presses were working round theclock producing 600,000 stamps a day. The stamp had become an icon, a symbol ofnational pride: an image of Britannia itself.

Job Act 2There was a day that Satan came before the Lord, and the Lord said to Satan, “Fromwhere have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro onthe earth, and from walking up and down on it.” And the Lord said to Satan, “Have youconsidered my church, how they gather every Sunday, and praise and worship My HolyName. They do this year in and year out, every Sunday morning, all over the world. From the time the sun rises in the east until the sun sets in the west, My Name getsglorified, like a wave washing over all the earth.”Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Have you not blessed them with health andwealth and prosperity, with which they have built beautiful church buildings, and filledit with amazing technology? Have You not blessed them with all manner of talents thatthey bring together in these beautiful churches they built and worship You with beautifulmusic that appeals to their senses?”“But stretch out Your hand, and take all that from them, strike them down with a plagueor even just the fear of a plague, and they will go quiet and worship You no more. Thiswave of worship, running from the east of the earth to the west, every Sunday morningwill stop, and all will go quiet. Who will worship You then? Who will still make YourName great?”And the Lord said to Satan, “They are in your hand.” So Satan unleashed a deadlyvirus upon the earth, and soon churches closed all over the world. Everyone,Christians and gentiles hunkered down in their homes, and everything went quiet… andSatan was standing there, watching, waiting, all the angels were standing in heaven, watching, waiting and God was standing there, watching, waiting… as a great silencefell over all the heavens and all the earth. Then one angel called out; “Listen…!”, and another called out; “I hear it too… it’scoming from the east”. In a small living room, in a locked up house, came the sound ofa piano being played, and a voice singing;“Holy, holy, holy,Though the darkness hide Thee,Though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,Perfect in power, in love, and purity!”And another angel called out “Listen, over there, in the west!” And the sound of a guitar, coming from a bedroom could be heard with a voice singing;“All hail King Jesus, All hail Emmanuel!Kind of king, Lord of lords, Bright Morning Star! And for all eternity, I’ll sing Your praises,And will reign with You, throughout eternity”

And slowly, from all directions on the earth, the sound of instruments and voices couldbe heard, louder and louder, until it became a symphony of worship, rising up toheaven. A cacophony of song, praising God, declaring His greatness, thanking Himfor His grace, His mercy, His forgiveness. Songs of dedication and declaration, songsof encouragement, songs filled with the joy and peace that can only come from God,sung by thousands of men and woman, young and old, wherever they were, accompanied by whatever means they had.And God turned to Satan and said; “Did you notice… today is Tuesday! Now, Mychurch, having been freed from all the business that filled their lives, worships Meevery day of the week, for they still know that 'I Am'! The wave of worship that runsfrom sunrise in the east until sunset in the west now circles the earth, every day, asthe earth circles the sun.”And all of heaven fell down on their faces and worshipped God, calling out “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His Glory!”. And Satan turned andwalked away, defeated as he has been since the day of Calvary.

Who said this? The day is coming when telegraph wires will be laid onto houses justlike water or gas - and friends converse with each other withoutleaving home. Answer page 17

SUNDAY CLUB NEWSIt may surprise you to know that Sunday Club has continued to meet during the currentsituation and because of the popularity of our sessions has in fact started meetingweekly instead of twice a month. This is all thanks to technology and the use ofsomething called Zoom. Something I had never heard of before March this year. It hasbeen a sharp learning curve for me.Attendance has been nearly 100% - fancy that! – and some of our members join usfrom faraway places such as Disney World or deep in the ocean! I too have nowlearned how to add a background scene to my screen if I want to.We plan our sessions using our usual ROOTS materials and include games and songand crafts each week. We always post examples of our craft activity on the Send ParishChurch Facebook page. One of my favourite craft activities was making Easter Rocksto join in the latest community effort in Send to brighten people’s walks around thevillage. We decorated stones with the Easter message and left them around the villageon our walks as part of our response to Jesus’ message to go and tell others that hehad returned from the dead. This coming Sunday one of our young people is going to entertain us with a magic trickwhich will share the same message. I can’t wait!We hope everyone reading this is keeping well and safe at home.Love and prayers to you from all of Sunday Club, Sally.

ACROSTIC POEMI set a challenge in the April copy of Outlook, asking readers to write and send me anacrostic poem based on the word CREATION. I have only received two poems and soam going to extend the deadline until when I write next month’s “Sunday Club News”in May. To inspire you this is the start of one of the wonderful poems:

Creatures great and creatures smallthe Lord God he made them allRats, minks, rabbits with coats of fur mice and skunks and cats that purr….

LETTERWHEEL Answer: FRUGALITY

TOOLS WITH A MISSION – Easter AppealAs you know because of the coronavirus pandemic many charities are asking for helpwith funds as they are not able to run their normal fundraising campaigns at themoment. One of these charities is Tools With a Mission. This is a charity the CoffeeShop has supported in the past. If you are able to help with their Easter appeal for adonation, go to their website at www.twam.ukTWAM is a Christian charity that collectsunwanted usable tools, refurbishes them, sortsthem into trade tool kits and sends them to thedeveloping world for livelihood creation. As anexample, a basic electric sewing machine will setyou back about £120 in the UK. Thanks to theirincredible collectors and refurbishers across thecountry, TWAM can provide high quality sewing machines for thousands ofindividuals for just £25 per machine. This is the cost to collect, refurbish and sendout these beautiful machines. The charity sends around 20 containers filled with over 300 tonnes of tools everyyear, investing in local people supporting their own communities through livelihoodcreating projects such as skills training centres. Because of the coronaviruspandemic, collectors have stopped collecting while Government restrictions remainin place. Those of us who remember George Bleach will recall his ready wit.The following article was penned by him in October 1989 during theOrgan Fund appeal.

“Copper Collection

Since Nan and Eileen became worried (about the organ fund) anddecided to call in the coppers, the STOAT (sorely-tried old assistanttreasurer) has acquired the nickname of Penny Lope (from the way hewalks to the Bank on Mondays) and is wandering around looking forthe fellow who invented the idea of ‘looking after the pennies and thepounds will look after themselves’. But, all joking apart (who’s joking?)it has been a great success and, at the close of business on Sunday10th September, the total stood at £83 exactly! Keep ‘em coming –let’s make the Organ Fund account well bronzed.”

ARE WE STILL COLLECTING COPPERS?

Over the years the collection of coppers has given a surprising boost to funds, back in1989 for the Organ Fund, then for the Millennium Fund as we approached the year2000. George was succeeded by John Revel in his trips to the bank with the pennies.Norman Carpenter now carries out this important task and any loose change you givehim, or which is put into the basket at the back of church, will go towards church funds. He can also take foreign coins which the bank is happy to accept, the proceeds fromthese going to a Breast Cancer charity.

So as George said “Keep ‘em coming”!!

An Easter season prayer:We are often not the Easter People that we should be,living in the certain knowledge of your great mercy and love.Distracted by the world around us we fail to hear your voice,or hide when faith is challenged as we wander off the path.Forgive us, we pray;restore the love that we first had,a faith that can endure. We will keep our eyes fixed on you, Lord, and with you at our right handwe shall not be shaken.
