Final Report for Trial No. 1933 –Hardy Chrysanthemum 2010-2012 1

RHS Trial of Hardy Chrysanthemums 2010-2012

Introduction: There were 130 entries in this trial, including garden mums, hardy sprays, mammoths (USA), Koreans and Rubellums. The trial was planted in open ground on the Trials Field at Deers Farm, RHS Garden Wisley. The objectives of the trial were:

To draw attention to the hardiness, range of colour and form in hardy chrysanthemums currently available in the UK.

To assess, compare and demonstrate the cultivation of a range of named cultivars, to assess their hardiness and ease of cultivation, and to recommend plants for the Award of Garden Merit.

Judging and Recommendation for the Award of Garden Merit: In order to receive an Award of Garden Merit, a cultivar must have performed well for two flowering seasons and receive a 3 to 1 voting majority.

Criteria for assessment were:

Winter hardiness

Form of the flower, flower number, their regularity, length of flowering period, colour and clarity of colour

Sturdiness and general weather resistance

Resistance to pest and disease, particularly white rust.

Overall impact and use in the garden The trial was assessed between June 2010 and November 2012. The assessments were performed by the RHS Chrysanthemum Sub-Committee and recommendations made for Award of Garden Merit, these were ratified by the RHS Herbaceous Committee.

Cultivation: The trial plot was dug over by hand and following soil analysis in late April 2010 the following fertilisers were incorporated into the soil: potassium nitrate 68g/m2, calcium nitrate 68g/m2, kieserite (16% Mg) 51g/m2, dolomite limestone (11-13% Mg)136g/m2, triple superphosphate 85g/m2. The plot was fenced and irrigation lines put down. Support posts were erected to provide string support to each cultivar block, as necessary. Cultivars were planted in approximate height order: netting was staged to support the plants, allowing them to grow through. New entries of Korean and Rubellum cultivars were received on 27 May 2010 as rooted cuttings and kept in the open area of the propagation unit prior to planting out on 14 June 2010. Cushion mums were received as plugs in May 2010 for planting directly into the trial. Stock plants from the 2009 garden chrysanthemum trial which had been retained in propagation, were used to take cuttings during April 2010. These were potted on in late April and tips pinched out in mid May 2010. The cushion mums, sprays, disbuds and mammoth types were all planted out at Deers Farm on 14 June 2010. No liquid feed was applied during 2010, to ensure that new growth would not be too lush to withstand the initial winter season. All the plants grew well and gave a good display lasting well into November. After flowering the plants were cut down by half to prevent trouble with wind rock.

Final Report for Trial No. 1933 –Hardy Chrysanthemum 2010-2012 2

In April 2011 all the plants were starting into new growth, the old growth was tidied to 5cm. Due to the growth in the first year making it difficult to walk between the rows more netting was erected. A top dressing of blood/fish/bone at a rate of 60g/m was applied around the plants. During the growing season, following soil analyses, liquid feed (ratio 1:1:1 NPK) was applied periodically. Good growth was made during the season. In August it was noted that white rust (Puccinia Horiana) was appearing on some of the cultivars and it was recommended that a spray regime be commenced. Systhane, Bumper and Signum were applied over alternate weeks. Another problem was noted on certain cultivars located near the trials entrance; eelworm was confirmed. This spread to some other cultivars in a widening V-pattern, and severely infected plants were removed and destroyed. The source of infection was unclear. In November after flowering, all the plants were cut back by half to prevent wind rock. At the start of April 2012, the ground was very dry so a line feed of 2:1:1 NPK with irrigation was performed. A single drench of Signum was given to help kill any over wintering spores of white rust. Due to a very wet summer and nutrients being leached out of the very free draining soil, feeds of Sangral 1:1:1 NPK were given at weekly intervals. Again some of the cultivars showed signs of white rust and additional cultivars showed signs of eelworm. The worst affected plants were removed and destroyed. The trial period ended in November 2012. Meteorological Report During the first winter of the trial, the Meteorological Office announced that it had been the coldest

December since 1890. At one point the temperature at Wisley fell to -17°C. By March it was reported

that the average rainfall was the lowest for a century and the warmest since 1659. This was followed by having the hottest day on record in June, followed by thunderstorms. After little frost in October and November 2011, January saw temperatures at ground level measured at

around -10°C and by mid-February down to -15°C for a few days. This was followed by the

Meteorological Office announcing the worst winter drought since 1976; stored water was very low and a dry summer was expected. April saw a hosepipe ban in many places. By June records were broken again, it was announced by the Meteorological Office as being the wettest since 1910. This was reflected in poor growth due to the very free draining soil and the rain leaching out the nutrients. Some cultivars did better than others; they had deeper roots to search for nutrition. Conclusions It was not possible to assess the garden mums as most were severely affected by eelworm and were removed and destroyed. The replants of sprays and early disbuds from the 2009 garden trial were not assessed as they did not over winter well. Also the Mammoths and Igloo types which had been sent from America flowered very well during the first season but did not do well after the first winter. In order for a cultivar to receive an Award for Garden Merit, each was assessed for winter hardiness and resistance to pests and diseases. The cultivars that were awarded an Award of Garden Merit had shown a good resistance to white rust and eelworm as well as being winter hardy. In all 20 cultivars were awarded an AGM (H4). Seven cultivars had their AGM (H4) status reconfirmed. Two cultivars had their AGM (H3) reconfirmed, whilst two cultivars had their AGM (H3) rescinded due to poor performance. The cultivars which received awards fell into two broad types; the shorter cultivars that flowered from late June to September, which could be used at the front of a border; secondly those being taller and bushier, flowering from mid-September through to November. These would be ideal for middle/back of a border, and would provide plenty colour near the end of the year. A very successful Open Day was held on October 11th 2011 to enable the public to visit the trial area and view the extremely colourful display.
