Welcome to our January issue...When you say you’re off to see Brad Pitt in person there’s one request that will inevitably be made by men and women alike: ‘Tell me what he looks like in the flesh’.

He is without doubt one of the biggest stars on the planet but Brad has announced he is to retire in three years at the age of 50. Saturday 4th February 2012 marks the opening of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew’s month long Tropical Extravaganza festival, where the Princess of Wales Conservatory is transformed into a sea of exotic orchids.

We take a look at the stunning royal barge that will carry the Queen down the River Thames during her Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year.

The vessel will lead a 1,000-strong flotilla along the river on 3rd June, as the monarch marks 60 years on the throne. She will be joined by her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and other members of the Royal Family.

This gives you just a small taste of exciting events and articles featured in this month’s issue...

Brighten up your winter with the sight of exotic butterflies and the beauty of RHS Garden Wisley’s world-class Glasshouse, with the spectacular ‘Butterflies in the Glasshouse’ event 14 January – 26 February 2012. See a wide range of colourful and exotic butterflies as they settle into the tropical zone of the Glasshouse. Wander underneath palms and watch the butterflies as they take part in courtship flights and feed from plant nectar and fruit that have been specially grown for the butterflies to feed from.

With these majestic butterflies filling the air there are plenty of photo opportunities as colour, light and movement can easily be captured.

For those looking to hone their

photographic skills, RHS Garden Wisley will be running two photography mornings in the Glasshouse to teach you how to take pictures of these exotic insects.*

There will also be a collection of giant caterpillars so that visitors can experience the full life cycle of these wonderful creatures.

Saturday 4th February 2012 marks the opening of the Royal Botanic

Gardens Kew’s month long Tropical Extravaganza festival, where the Princess of Wales Conservatory is transformed into a sea of exotic orchids. It’s a celebration of all things bright, beautiful, and, tropical.

The theme for this year is ‘Forces of Nature’ - visitors will be immersed in an environment where natural foliage and planting schemes will be interspersed with representational displays that dynamically explore and raise awareness of the four classical elements: air, fire, water and earth. Ornamental displays of tropical flowers will represent the elements by colour themes, such as hanging baskets of aquatic hues for water, and arches decorated with blazoned reds, yellows and oranges for fire.

The wet tropical zone with its lush landscape will contrast with the colour-structured ‘forces of nature’ displays. Using the architecture of the building and a range of suspension, receptacle and planting devices, the zone will be transformed into a landscape

of sumptuous tropical plants. As well as the stunning

floral displays, a number of sculptures will be in situ, including representations of wind-dispersed seeds, fungi, mangroves, cabanas, and wildlife. There will also be an atmospheric sound-scape that will covey the importance of air and wind to nature’s balance.

Tropical Extravaganza will also highlight Kew’s global science and conservation programmes, illustrating how plants and fungi depend on and moderate the classical elements across our planet.

You can book now for the tours:

GIANT AIRBORNE ERNEST THE OWL SCULPTURE GETS READY TO SWOOP DOWN AT THE SAVILL BUILDING, WINDSOR GREAT PARK

1 2 J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 2

E V E N T S

rnest the Owl, a giant sculpture with a 16ft wing span and made entirely from recycled cardboard packaging, is suspended from

the ceiling of the Savill Building until the end of January, and is

ready to swoop down on visitors as they come through the doors.

Ernest was created by Anna Marshall, artist and Savill Building Manager, who comments: “The idea for this sculpture came to me when I was watching a Great Grey Owl in an episode of BBC TV’s Frozen Planet. I had also been given a flat pack cardboard dodo kit and the two ideas came together. I have used recycled cardboard packaging from deliveries to the Savill Building gift shop and built the owl in sections. Since the sculpture is so large, the biggest challenge was to physically move it from my house to the Savill Building and then to hang it from the ceiling. I have called the owl Ernest after the explorer Sir Ernest

Shackleton who is a hero of mine.”

Ernest is constructed with packaging from goods made by British companies which are stocked in The Savill Building gift shop. If visitors look closely, they will see logos for The Royal Fruit Farms at Sandringham and Newberry Fruits amongst others.

This is the third year in which Anna herself has created a large sculpture for public display in The Savill Building and builds on The Royal Landscape’s reputation as a space in which to view sculpture and art. Throughout August last year, visitors to The Savill Garden enjoyed a sculpture exhibition, and there will be another sculpture display in the summer 2012. The Savill Building Gallery showcases British-based artists with works referring to the natural beauty of the British countryside and our place within it. All works in the gallery are for sale

with pieces to suit a range of budgets.

Anna Marshall adds: “I hope that our visitors will enjoy seeing Ernest. Every year, I like to devise a sculpture which is fun and will make people smile. Ernest follows in the footsteps of the polar bear made from recycled plastic milk cartons and the reindeer made from teasel.”

The Crown Estate Operations Manager Nick Day comments: “The Crown Estate is committed to reducing waste and using resources efficiently and responsibly. To this end, we are working closely with Grundons to reduce the amount of waste which is sent to landfill sites from The Savill Building, including the gift shop and restaurant. The boxes which Anna used to make Ernest would otherwise have been taken away for incineration.”

You can make your own contribution to the environment by bringing back

your Christmas tree for recycling from 6 January 2012, to The Savill Garden Car Park which is open from 8am to 4pm throughout January. Just turn up with the tree and unload it into the special compound provided. Christmas trees bought from other outlets are welcome. Only Christmas trees can be accepted for recycling. The trees will be chipped and turned into mulch which is used to enrich the soil throughout The Royal Landscape.

The Royal Landscape is an area of a thousand acres of lakes, gardens and parkland, accessible to the public, at the southern end of Windsor Great Park. It includes The Savill Garden, the Valley Gardens and Virginia Water Lake. It is a man-made landscape, which has been shaped and planted over a period of 400 years.

hat do you do if you really want something special and just can’t find it? When all you yearn for is just the best of its kind in the world - and no-one seems

to have produced it; at least not to the standard you desire? If you are Roy and Tracey Jones you initially scour the

earth for a key ingredient and, when you have finally tracked it down, you create what you were looking for in the first place - the world’s finest luxury chocolate experience.

“I wanted to buy a very special present for a very special person on a very special day - her 40th birthday,” explains Tracey. “Like me she is a chocoholic! I went to the top-end departments stores and even some of the little luxury chocolate boutiques but just could not find what I wanted. There is a lot of nice chocolate about, of course, but, I don’t know, there was always something missing. It was very frustrating and in the end I bought her something else entirely.”That was the beginning but by no means the end of a two year journey which has reached a triumphant conclusion with the launch of ‘the Chocolate’ Roy and Tracey’s new business dedicated to producing ‘the best luxury chocolate experience in the world.’

What is it?In its simplest form we are talking about an amazing ‘experience’. Handmade truffles using an award winning, secret recipe Italian chocolate, filled with champagne, flaked with edible 24-carat gold all enclosed within a bespoke handcrafted boutique box encrusted with more than 450 Swarovski Crystals inside and out. Also made by hand no two of these boxes will ever be the same. The chocolate itself is 63% Toscano Black sourced from a tiny artisan chocolate maker based just outside historic Pisa. The cocoa beans are refined using a traditional granite stone mill and the result has been judged by the Academy of Chocolate as officially the best in the world.

What experts call the ganache - basically the mixture of cocoa, cream and a variety of other ingredients to form

what consumers think of as, well, the chocolate - that forms ‘the Chocolate’ is a closely guarded secret but Roy and Tracey are happy to confirm that there are several glasses of champagne added to the normal recipe. “As we make everything ourselves we can, of course, produce ‘the Chocolate’ without alcohol if required,” commented Tracey.

You Eat thE Gold? It’s the world’s most expensive foodstuff and has been eaten for

millennia. Although the Ancient Egyptians believed it gave them immortality no such claims are made for ‘the

Chocolate.’ (yet). However other authorities do claim that gold has many attributes when eaten,

including generating a higher IQ, managing rheumatoid arthritis, developing mystic power and contributing to a long and healthy life. More seriously it is authorised for use in food products in both Europe and the USA.

High quality chocolate also has its enthusiasts. They claim that chocolate with over 60% cocoa content (‘the Chocolate’

has 63%) reduces blood pressure, decreases the chance of both diabetes and heart attack,

improves the memory and even eases a persistent cough amongst a plethora of other attributes.

Be that as it may the fact remains that ‘the Chocolate’ has a fantastic taste that will

exceed the expectations of the wildest choccie enthusiast. And the memory of the experience will last and last.

‘Matahari’ lends its name from the Malay language meaning the SUN.In the warm and friendly ambiance of our rustic and cozy restaurant, we aim to bring you a FUSION of the various cooking styles of the mystical Far-East with particular emphasis on Malaysian, Chinese, Thai and Japanese favourites.

Malaysian cuisine itself is a combination of the cooking methods of three nations – Indian, Chinese and Malay. These have merged to make a unique, harmonious blend that is an identifying characteristic

of the cuisine of this tropical peninsular. The use of Indian spices such as cumin, tumeric and chilies, the Chinese influence of soy sauce, garlic and ginger, the Malay contribution of ‘sambal’ & a blend of other exotic spices and the various cooking styles of the Portuguese, Dutch and British during their years of occupation there is evident in authentic Malaysian style dishes.Thai food is rich in texture and characterised by flavours such as the citrus-limes, basil leaves, fresh coriander and coconut milk. An important ingredient

in Thai style cooking is a mild fish sauce that is central as the main savoury flavouring.

The cuisine of Japan has enjoyed an unprecedented boom in popularity, perhaps largely due to the healthy nature of their dishes. The use of seafood, especially fish, and vegetables such as seaweed is central to the art of preparing Japanese cuisine. We hope the above introduction will cast light on the fusion - concept of our unique cooking style and awaken your desire for an exclusive culinary experience.

the strain of the recent recession, Prestige Asset Finance has been busy helping people borrow much needed cash against their treasured assets. Business is booming as people are finding financial

escape routes in the short-term, without the trauma of having to part with their valuable possessions permanently.

In times of economic crisis, when the banks are tightening their belts and lenders are using unforgiving credit scoring processes, people are finding that this is the only way forward. Prestige Asset Finance

allows customers an instant cash loan for an agreed period, using valuables as collateral.

The Managing Director of Prestige Asset Finances saw a gap in the market for comfortable lending against valuables. His system works well; customers don’t need to suffer the painful experience of going through relentless credit check and employment details or the ultimate misery of having to sell their much loved item.

‘Prestige Asset Finance was established in Jan 2009, when I started to see an increase in the need for this type of business.

Most of our clients are asset rich but cash poor. In desperate times, I am able to bridge their financial gap for them, whilst they decide what to do in the long term’, James Constantinou, Managing Director.

A Prestige Asset loan can be a short term loan for up to 12 months and can be arranged for any amount between £100 through to £1,000,000. Prestige Asset Finance find that most of their customers have been offering items such as classic cars, Art, Antiques, Property and Rare books right through to watches, jewellery, gold, silver, platinum and

gemstones used as collateral.

Prestige Asset Finance can help you release previously unrealised equity. Take a fresh look at your assets, you might be sitting on a fortune, or at least enough to get you out of a tight spot. Driving around worrying about finances can’t help you, but maybe with a Logbook loan, the car you own can.

He then bought players who’d been ignored by larger, more lucrative teams, but who would help his team to victory.

“The film didn’t fall into convention and it was a difficult one to get made,” admits Pitt, looking a little shiny-faced despite the shade (so the man is a mere mortal then.) “We’re in tough economic times and people start betting on safer, more tried-and tested brands,” he says, before adding that while he’s never spent a lot of time watching baseball, he became obsessed by the book.

“Billy Beane’s team had a

$40 million payroll and they were trying to compete with teams with $240 million payrolls. It forced these guys to back up and say: ‘We can’t fight how the other guys fight. We have to search for new baseball knowledge.

We have to re-examine the sport and where

we place value’.”Through that

process they discovered great inefficiencies on how people were judged, and Pitt says: “The film is ultimately about

how we place value on people and

how society informs how we value ourselves.

“These themes are universal. And the ideas these guys employed have now permeated other sports, like football, various arms of business - even the film industry.”

Raised with his brother Doug and sister Julie in Missouri by his dad Bill, who

ran a truck company, and

his mum Jane, a school guidance

counsellor, Pitt was studying for a journalism degree when he decided to give acting a whirl. Like thousands of other good-looking hopefuls, he travelled to Los Angeles where he subsidised his acting classes with odd jobs, including dressing as a chicken, before earning his big break in Ridley Scott’s 1991 movie Thelma & Louise. His screen time totalled less than 15 minutes but when the film was released everyone was asking who the man who seduces Geena Davis was, and it led to parts

in Robert Redford’s A River Runs Through It and the dark thriller Kalifornia.

Pitt says it was only when Legends Of The Fall was released in 1994 “that celebrity hit me”. “You get no warning and you’re kind of overwhelmed. I didn’t understand all the attention,” says Pitt, before returning to the recurring theme of value. “The attention doesn’t come from a place of real value. People want to get near you but it has nothing to do with you as a person. It has more to do with something those people are missing in themselves.”

In the 20 years since his scene-stealing performance in Thelma & Louise, Pitt’s managed to keep the audience guessing his next move. He’s depicted death in Meet Joe

Black, an incoherent Irish brawler in Snatch, a Nazi killer in Inglourious Basterds and aged backwards in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. “Film-making is about longevity,” says Pitt. “Is it a quality picture? Is it a quality story? Is there something original about it?”

These are the questions Pitt asks himself before embarking on a project today but admits he may have lost focus for a while and the result was The Mexican (2001), Spy Game (2001), Troy (2004) and Mr & Mrs Smith (2005).

The latter remains a personal favourite though, as it was the film on which he met Jolie, with whom has adopted children Maddox, 10, Pax, seven, and Zahara, six, and biological children Shiloh, five, and twins Knox and Vivienne, three.

Today he’s less concerned about a film making

money. “There’s such a thing as the

quiet victory, the personal victory that only you and you alone experience. And that’s

enough,” he explains.

“Films that I’ve loved [making],

like The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford and The Tree Of Life, they’re ‘fine wine’ pictures - they’ll age well.”

Pitt recently announced he’s looking to retire at around 50, and as the producer of 20 titles perhaps he’ll spend the autumn years of life behind the scenes. “It’s just about getting stories across that may have a more difficult time seeing the light of day,” he says. “That’s all I want, to see movies get made that I believe should be made. And if my name, whatever it may or may not be worth, can help that process, then that’s what I’m going to do.”

“I knew very little about baseball besides taking one in the face when I was in junior high”

Brad Pitt.indd 3 13/1/12 13:18:23

When you say you’re off to see Brad Pitt in person

there’s one request that will inevitably be made by men and women alike: ‘Tell me what he looks like in the flesh.’

That’s because Pitt is so famous he’s almost taken on an otherworldly status. The truth is the actor, voted ‘sexiest man alive’ countless times during his career, doesn’t disappoint when he casually strides out onto the terrace of a Mexican hotel for a photocall to promote his new baseball movie Moneyball.

He’s tall (a rarity among Hollywood’s elite) and broad, having spent the last few months in training for the film World War Z, a post-apocalyptic horror, which has seen Pitt, his partner Angelina Jolie and their brood of six reside in Glasgow, London and Cornwall during filming. His dark blonde hair is grown out and tucked behind his ears, his stubble is salt-and-pepper grey and, despite the balmy temperatures, he’s wearing a long-sleeved top.

He may be an A-lister, but he’s rarely spotted on the red carpet these days, and while he smiles for the assorted cameras and cracks jokes with

co-star Jonah Hill, his eyes remain hidden behind aviator sunglasses and his hands stay tucked into the pockets of cream linen trousers.

Given the theme of his new film, baseball is the name of the game later that day when, in a quiet, shady spot, Pitt reveals that while he likes to play ball with his kids, his own relationship with the all-American sport has been traumatic.

“I knew very little about baseball besides taking one in the face when I was in junior high,” laughs Pitt, 47. “Eighteen stitches was the result of that incident. This scar here,” he says pointing to the side of his head. It takes iron will not to lean in for a closer inspection.

Moneyball is based on the controversial 2003 book Moneyball: The Art Of Winning An Unfair Game in which the author Michael Lewis wrote about the exploits of Billy Beane (Pitt), a former baseball player turned general manager of Oakland A’s baseball team. Beane revolutionised the way the baseball industry assessed its players by employing a statistical analysis that showed the qualities historically used to value players were outdated.

anuary 2011 sees the opening of Moorlands Lodge, a luxurious new Care Community in Hindhead and the fourth community

within the Signature group of companies. Signature Senior Living is an organisation dedicated to providing a model of UK senior care provision that establishes new standards of quality and adaptability to individual need.

Moorlands Lodge is a beautiful, purpose built building offering spacious accommodation in the form of superbly appointed studio, one bedroom or two bedroom apartments. However, the physical accommodation is only one aspect of this unique approach to senior living.

Moorlands Lodge will offer a truly person-centred approach to each of its residents. For some this will simply be the knowledge that that all forms of support are available 24 hours a day should they be

required. For others, perhaps with more complex needs, it could mean a specific care plan that allows them to live their lives with dignity whilst receiving assistance to maintain whatever personal level of independence they desire.

Each resident joining the community will meet members of a highly experienced team in order to consider individual needs and preferences such that a unique care plan can be developed to ensure a comfortable and fulfilling lifestyle. This innovative approach means that, whatever the future may hold, all our residents are assured that the care that they need will always be available and delivered within their own apartments by appropriately trained and dedicated staff, ultimately with the aim of avoiding the need to ever move again.

Moorlands Lodge will also provide a specialist Dementia Unit comprising 20 en-suite apartments where residents will

receive an unparalleled standard of care. Our forward thinking approach will be pioneering a new future for people living with Dementia also supporting their families through the journey that their loved ones are experiencing.

Within the Moorlands Lodge community residents will enjoy fine dining in a licensed restaurant whilst a coffee shop and a cafe will provide tea, coffee, cakes, pastries, fresh fruit, etc 24 hours a day. Here is your checklist to get your best look with Dr Haus:

remodelling to counter the e ects of aging. As a woman ages the reduced amount of collagen in her skin means that the skin in the cheeks, chin, jawline and nose will start to lose its structure and sag. is can lead to the appearance of deep lines that are not reversible by the use of other treatments such as botulinum or skin peels. e appearance of the lips will also change as a woman ages, due to the thinning of vermillion and the loss of collagen in the lips. Smoking, alcohol consumption and sun damage all worsen this situation. rough the use of quality dermal llers such as Restylane and Juvaderm, Dr. Haus can safely add volume to the face and lips to reverse these e ects of aging.

e actual treatment that Dr. Haus recommends will depend on the individual circumstances of the patient and the area to be treated, but in each case, the results will be visible immediately.

In Dr. Haus’ experience dermal llers will achieve excellent results when used to add volume to the lips, the area between the nose and corners of the mouth (nasogenal) and the cheekbones (malar).

Dermal llers such as Restylane consist of sterile gels that comprise stabilised non-animal based hyaluronic acid. e products are injected into the skin using a thin needle to correct lines, wrinkles and folds in the face, to sculpt lips and form facial contours. Whilst patients are able to resume their normal activities after treatment with dermal llers there are some precautions that must be taken and Dr. Haus will advise his patients on the precautions they should take in the 24 hours following treatment.

ABC Dental is a dentistry with your personal needs at the forefront. Catering for any age, ABC Dental believe it’s never too late to produce the perfect smile.

The dentists and surgeons of ABC Dental have a wealth of experience and expertise individually and collectively. Dr. Su Rai graduated in dentistry with a distinction and has a specialist interest in smile design and cosmetics. Dr. Taina Karstikko has 28 years experience in the field, harnessing a wealth of invaluable knowledge as a dental surgeon also. Anders Hjort, DDS, specialises in Oral and Maxilofacial surgery having qualified as a dentist in 1979. Whilst Dr Claudia Bortolaia is our resident orthodontist having graduated with honours in 1999. To say your teeth and gums are in good hands would be an understatement at the very least.

The range of treatments available is curtailed specifically to each individual patient dependent on their needs, from a minimal crown to discreetly place invisible bracing.

Specialising in orthodontics and implants, it means it’s never too late to create the perfect smile everyone wishes for. All patients receive a full and bespoke consultation to ensure they get the most suitable treatment possible. To ensure your teeth remain aesthetically pleasing whilst you are undergoing treatment, ABC Dental offers Lingual braces and braces that are attached to the inside of the teeth, making the appearance of these appliances minimal.

There is also the option of choosing removable braces, which again are designed with as few components as possible to ensure their visibility when attached is discreet. Invisalign

is another choice. It looks like a small colourless gum shield and the process involves wearing discreet aligners which gradually move the teeth into the desired place.

Of course, you may want to replace a single crown to match an existing tooth colour or you’ve lived with badly broken down or neglected teeth and want a full

smile makeover. ABC Dental’s expertise in implants and fixing can bring back the smile many of us have been living without through decay, gum diseases or

excessive wear and tear. Whatever your requirements, the team of expert dentists and surgeons at ABC Dental are at hand to complete all treatments with your

needs at the forefront. Your enamel is

the strongest material in your body, and care is taken to maintain this wherever

possible.

ABC Dental’s resident dentist, Dr. Rai also has expertise in cosmetic and paediatric dentistry making it the ideal place to ensure the care and preservation of your child’s teeth from their very first appointment, which would ideally be when they are as young as 1 or 2. The dentistry has created a relaxing environment to ensure any child’s dentistry needs run as smoothly as possible, so if they were ever to need more constructive surgery they would feel right ‘at home’.

Knowing you’re in safe hands is what matters most, and here the dentists carry the expertise and experience to ensure, you’re well looked after performing treatments with the utmost care and proficiency, whatever your age.

LIGHT CELEBRITIES UMA THURMAN, GWYNETH PALTROW, MERYL STREEP.

MAKE-UP MANTRA It’s all about adding subtle definition to your Light features. “Give a hint of colour to eyebrows and eyelashes - a warm brown mascara will be more flattering than black,” Henshaw advises. “Try not to overpower your delicate colouring with strong shades of eye shadow or lipstick, even when it comes to more glamorous make-up. Instead, use

Welcome to the year of Tangerine Tango. The global authority on colour, Pantone, has designated the reddish orange as its colour of the year in succession to Honeysuckle pink. The vibrant shade is now being touted as a go-to in cosmetics because of its versatility. It’s exotic but in a friendly, non-threatening way, according to the Pantone colour gurus. But whether you dance to the tune of Tangerine Tango for your lips, nails or even eyes, it’s clear the 2012 tone won’t be for everyone. When refreshing your

make-up bag for January, the key to finding your own colour of the year lies in your hair and complexion. “Understanding your colouring is the next step in helping you to achieve a perfect make-up look,” explains Pat Henshaw, co-author of new book Colour Me Beautiful Make-up Manual. “The aim is to create balance and harmony between your natural colouring and the colours of clothes and make-up you wear.” By wearing your own bespoke brand of make-up shades, Henshaw believes

you will not only feel good but look younger, healthier and fitter.

Here’s how to discover your colour palette for 2012 and beyond...

LIGHT

Your overall look is pale and delicate. The undertone of your colouring can be warm, with golden tints to your hair and a few freckles on your skin, or cool, with ash tones to your hair and a slight pinkish tint to your skin.

the right colours from your palette and apply them in different ways.”

PALETTEMedium grey, light navy, cocoa and taupe for neutrals. Pastel pink, geranium, sky blue and apple green for accents.

DEEP

Your skin can be porcelain to black but all your features - hair, eyebrows, eyes and lashes - are dark and defined so your make-up should be similarly deep and rich in tone.

DEEP CELEBRITIES HALLE BERRY, PENELOPE CRUZ, AUDREY TAUTOU

MAKE-UP MANTRA Your features have a lot of depth to them and stand out on their own. “Accentuate your look by complementing it with dark, rich colours, even when it comes to more subtle daytime looks,” Henshaw suggests. “Blushers will add some depth to balance your colouring. Lipsticks in rich shades will look fantastic on you. However, if you prefer softer colours, you will need to ensure that your face is balanced with strong make-up.”

PALETTEBlack, aubergine, chocolate and pine for neutrals. Royal purple, scarlet, emerald green and true blue for accents.

WARM

You’re the golden girl of complexions with skin tone ranging from porcelain with freckles to golden brown. Auburn hair tones go as lightas strawberry blonde to dark rich red.

WARM CELEBRITIES CHRISTINA HENDRICKS, SUSAN SARANDON, FLORENCE WELCH

MAKE-UP MANTRA To enhance your warm and rich colouring, your make-up should always have yellow undertones. Henshaw advises: “Brown eye pencils and mascara flatter more than black for both day and night. “Choose a blush powder with a warm undertone and simply apply with a bit more depth depending on the time of day or occasion. Whether you want subtle lip colour or more dramatic lips, keep your lip colour warm with lovely, golden earthy tones.”

Palette: Bronze, olive, pewter and camel for neutrals. Apricot, primrose, terracotta and lime for accents.

COOL

You have blue, grey or cool brown eyes and ash tones to your hair, be it blonde, white, grey, salt and pepper, dark brown or black. Your colouring may have become cooler as you’ve aged.

COOL CELEBRITIES JAMIE LEE CURTIS, DAME HELEN MIRREN, DAME JUDI DENCH

MAKE-UP MANTRA Make the most of your distinctive colouring by wearing make-up colours with a cool or blue undertone. “Most cools have a striking look, so don’t be afraid to use brighter shades of lipstick and colours that will define your eyes,” says Henshaw.

“Cool, blue-based tones of eye shadows, blush and lipstick will always look best on you regardless

of what look you are trying to achieve. Take your barely-there make-up up a notch by defining the eye area and do so with grey, blue and lilac shades of eye shadows and eye pencils.”

PALETTECharcoal, dark navy, spruce and purple for neutrals. Light teal, rose pink, cornflower and blue red for accents.

CLEAR

Your most outstanding features are your eyes, which are highlightedbecause of the contrast to your dark hair. They will have a clear,jewel-like quality to them.

CLEAR CELEBRITIES CARLA BRUNI, KATE MIDDLETON, MILA KUNIS.

MAKE-UP MANTRA Your eye make-up shades should always enhance and not detract from your eye colour. “As a Clear, you can have the choice of making a feature of your eye make-up or your lipstick but not both,” warns Henshaw.

“Forget the rules about matching your eye shadow to your eye colour - it will only make your eyes blend in with your look and you really should make them pop. Bright colours are great during the day, whereas an aubergine pencil with purple eye shadow will be more glamorous for evenings.”

PALETTEBlack, black brown, royal blue and soft white for neutrals. Blush pink, ruby, Chinese blue and evergreen for accents.

SOFT

You may have found a little of yourself in each of the previous colouring types, but didn’t fit exactly. You have medium depth of skin tone, blonde to dark brown eyebrows and mousy blonde to light brown hair - often with highlights.

SOFT CELEBRITIES BEYONCE, SCARLETT JOHANSSON, KIM CATTRALL

MAKE-UP MANTRA The gentle combination of your hair, skin and eyes means that your make-up needs to be soft and subtle - but you still need colour and definition. Henshaw advises: “Your Soft colouring needs to be complemented with muted tones. Anything that is too bright or dark will detract from your face.

“Your eyebrows should always be defined with a blonde eyebrow pencil, while your eyes need to be lined with soft browns or mossy shades, not black.”

PALETTERose brown, charcoal, charcoal blue and stone for neutrals. Claret, sage, soft violet and lavender for accents.

Henshaw’s money saving tip... “Once you understand your colouring type and your best make-up shades, you can limit the cosmetics that you buy, investing only in those that will make you look fabulous.”

“I am in the process of creating my A/W 2012 women’s collection inspired by one of my favourite artists Louise Bourgeois” says Lada. It will be showcased at London Fashion Week in February - we can’t wait to see where she goes next!

For more information visit www.delada.co.uk or email [email protected].

Upon meeting designer Lada Komarova in her beautiful Surrey home, I like her straight away! Eloquent and intelligent, Russian born, Lada is obviously excited to talk us through her SS12 collection for her clothing line DELADA.

Launched in September 2010, Lada’s line is inspired by her own contemporary art background. She previously owned an art gallery and her move from contemporary art into fashion felt like a natural

next step to her. “The concept of DELADA began in 2009”, says Lada. “It came about while I was working on a friends fashion label and started to translate my own elements and concepts into my own womenswear collection.” Her first collection, titled Sense and Sensibility is inspired by the unusual sensibility of surrealist artistic innovations of the early 20th century.

For such a new designer, Lada’s sense of looking to the future is

unusually strong, focusing on the use of design elements that we’re sure will become the trademarks of her feminine clothes. Her focus on the back of the garment – “The back is the new front!” she laughs – and clever asymmetric design elements work together to bring the clothing a sleek, artistic feel. Combined with unique art fabrics designed in-house, her clothes really feel like wearing a piece of modern art. And her signature twisted butterfly logo graces delicate straps and floats

Wokingham based home entertainment company Future Home has also installed complete state of the art audio visual systems within the showroom, a visit to Lida Cucina is not just a visual experience!

mouth watering dishes, and local Italian delicatessen, Palmieri, provided authentic Italian canapés. All washed down by Bellinis and warming mulled wine, Italian style, of course.

ussex & Surrey Doors and Windows is based in Horsham close to the border of the two counties and have an exquisite showroom

where potential clients can come to meet the team, view a great range of the products offered and discuss their own ideas for a possible project.

Co-founders and directors of the company, Simon Crisp and Paul Hastain, have been in business together for over twenty-five years and have seen a lot of changes in the replacement doors and windows market in that time. However, their philosophy has remained the same and that is to simply offer the very best products and service at a fair price. This starts with an initial consultation with one of the two founders, either at their showroom or in your own home, when they will take the time to

understand exactly what you wish to achieve and to use their wealth of experience and knowledge in offering you the best of advice.

If you so wish they will then prepare especially for you, at no cost or obligation, a detailed yet easy to understand written quotation setting out the exact specification of each item and making some further observations that may enhance and already well thought through proposal. It is only when you have had time to consider all of your options and had all of your questions answered that they would ask you for any commitment. There is never any hard sell or ‘sign-up now discounts’.

The founders ensure all of the small team work closely with their select group of manufacturers to ensure every detail of every product is just perfect and also to spend time understanding the new

technologies and innovations that the manufacturers are bringing to the market place so that these can be offered to you with a clear understanding of their workings and advantages. This small team has been built carefully by the founders and includes long serving installation engineers whose expertise and attention to detail ensures that the high quality products produced are installed to the same exacting standards.

Once the installation is complete the company return to demonstrating their level of professionalism through their aftercare service. All of their installations are backed by the company’s insured guarantees whose generosity further demonstrate the founders’ belief in the quality of the manufacturing and installation of the products. All projects are registered with FENSA

who independently examine thousands of installations across the United Kingdom each year.

The founders understand that you are inviting the company into your home, which is not only likely to be your most valuable asset, but is and is full of, your most personal possessions. The whole company is enshrined with the ethic to treat your home with the care as if it were their own but with the respect that it is not. The objective is to supply you with the comprehensive service you deserve and your home with the quality of product that it requires.

you and the tree officer so that his concerns are obvious to you and yours to him. They are trying to avoid the unnecessary loss or permanent damage to our tree heritage.

Whether your trees are protected or not, always use professional tree surgeons. Before employing them check that they have the relevant qualifications and insurance. Tree work is skilled and dangerous work and not something to trust to anyone, so do not take risk as it may end up costly in the long run. Never employ someone who cold calls, good tree surgeons rarely have the time to do this. At the least take their estimate and credentials and compare it to other quotes. Please bear in mind that if you want to live in an enviroment where we have the pleasure of seeing trees, rather than a jungle of concrete, brick and tarmac, we all need to help protect, where possible, what is there and we cannot always expect someone else to provide this! H O U S EGARDEN

his time last year the weather was starting to warm up after

the extreme cold and snow of December, but what have we got

to contend with this year? Higher than average temperatures. Not for just one week but several months! During December the temperatures were 5’ C higher this year than the mean temperature we experienced in the period 1971 - 2000. Where has the winter gone! I will regret making this comment, if by the time the magazine is published and you are reading this we become snowbound. 5’C may not seem a great deal to you and I, when we are siting down in front of the television, trying to keep warm, but for nature it causes severe disruption to the normal cycles of life.

As with most things you have to be careful not to jump to conclusions as to how the weather is going to behave. It is not unheard of to get snow as late as April and freezing temperatures often hit as late as this, although generally the length and severity of any cold snap reduces, as we move past February. This year has been categorised by wind, my colleague Peter has had first hand experience of this. It’s a long time since I

7 0 J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 2

have experienced having to help pick up so many plants, so often on the nursery. Luckily for the enviroment, although there were some trees damaged by the winds in southern England, generally most came through unscathed, unlike during many previous storms.

The reason why we were so lucky is largely down to timing, with deciduous trees having lost all their leaves therefore offering lower wind resistance. Just a month or so earlier the consequences could have been much more severe as many plants had retained their leaves longer this year due to the lack of a cold stimulus in speeding up leaf fall. The damage caused and the branches and trees that did fall should however provide us with a warning. If people want to reduce the risk of this happening, it is essential that trees are provided with routine maintenance every few years depending on variety. Many of the trees that fell were dying or already leaning in a precarious position, with these the risk can only get greater as time goes on. Branches that fall are harder to determine in advance but often are damaged or diseased, growing at poor angles or just too long. Occasional thinning

and reduction of the tree crown would reduce these risks greatly and prolong the life of many trees. Some of you are restricted by tree preservation orders or conservation zones, but this still doesn’t stop you getting work done, it does however require you to get permission from your local tree officer in advance. See your local authorities website for details. Even so, do not let this put you off as it is important that not only you and your property are safe, but the tree is maintained to prolong it’s life.

When dealing with tree officers you will usually need to get the advice of the tree surgeon that you are going to use so that you can describe in a factual way what works are going to be carried out, the reasons for this work and the benefits. Often tree officers are not keen on allowing works to be carried out on protected trees, but that is not surprising as there are usually good reasons for it to be protected in the first place. Sometimes when the application is rejected it is through a lack of understanding as to what you are intending to do, or why the works appear to be so extreme. This can often be avoided by opening up a line of communication between

YYou want to move.! You need to move! You need more space for living, relaxing, entertaining. But moving is expensive and uncertain, and you have lavished a lot of time and money on your house and garden. Fortunately there are many ways to extend your property, from creating rooms in your loft, building a conservatory, to adding a garden room. All of these options create space and add value. Much has been written about loft conversions and conservatories, but garden rooms are still a largely undiscovered way of providing flexibility and fun.

When most people think of outside structures in the garden they think of gazebos and summerhouses. But these days the range of options is staggering. Given our British climate, rooms open to the elements might seem a risk.

How many days a year would you use it? What would you use it for? How would it fit into my garden?

Luke Dejahang, Managing Director of Crown Pavilions, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of garden

rooms, provides some of the answers.

“Times have changed” he said, “and the design of garden rooms has developed to meet people’s changing needs. Don’t think only

of open gazebos any more. Our garden gazebos are for all year use. They have durable canvas side panels that can be rolled down in the winter. The blinds come with zips and PVC windows as well as highly effective infrared heaters.

All these features mean the gazebos can be used all through the year. But you can also think about outdoor kitchens, sitting rooms with plasma screens, studies with storage and internet connection, screens to

protect you from the weather, mood lighting for evening entertainment, heating, hot tubs. These days we can provide a wide range of buildings for a variety of requirements, all designed around the needs of the families we build them for”.

A garden room should be an extension of your house, and you can put it wherever you want. You can landscape around the garden room to create an integral part of your garden.

Luke explained, “When we install a garden room we are especially mindful of the landscaping around it. Our sister company, Crown Gardens, will look after every aspect of planting and creating a beautiful setting which fits in with your existing garden. After all, the garden

room should be a sanctuary that reflects your house and enhances your garden. The lighting and heating are also important, especially if you want to entertain in the evening. We take care of all that too. We make sure that all parts of the structure work together in harmony, whether you are just relaxing or whether you are entertaining guests.”

Of course, these days we also have to be especially careful about our green credentials. The beauty of a garden room created by a company such as Crown Pavilions, is that you can be sure that the timber is ethically sourced as well as deigned for easy maintenance with a quality and natural finish. The structure must be sturdy and the soft furnishings need to be resistant to everything our climate

can subject it too; fade and insect-resistant in the summer and mould-resistant in the rain.

The possibilities are endless. Whether your garden is large or small, or merely a paved courtyard you will find a garden room to suit your taste.

Luke comments “People want to enhance their homes and gardens and create spaces which are flexible for family life and entertaining friends. Garden rooms extend the scope of how you use your house and garden, create exciting and beautiful focal points, potentially increase the value of your property, and they are fun”.

Keeping a keen eye on gardening trends, landscaping designs and what the public will be growing in 2012 and beyond, he predicts that the ‘grow your own’ campaign will be as strong as ever this year.

“Growing your own will still be popular,” he says, “and veg can be fitted into pockets on the flower border as well as on a dedicated veg patch. “Climbers on house walls are set to make a resurgence - who needs to look at boring brickwork? Just make sure that adequate wire or trellis supports are provided.

“And repeat-flowering roses should be in every garden - in and among border perennials and shrubs - dedicated rose beds are now out,” he says.

Despite heavy TV commitments, Titchmarsh will be out in his

Hampshire garden this winter, preparing it for spring and beyond.

“Getting my garden ready for spring is something that, like everybody else, I try to fit in around work. But it’s vital and my garden is my safety valve as well as my canvas.

“My garden has good lines. perspective, proportion and form are every bit as important to me as colour. There is lots of evergreen topiary - clipped box and yew - but within the borders there are

billowing banks of perennials, shrubs and roses. “I also have a wild flower meadow and a wildlife pond, providing great entertainment and a really good way of doing my bit for conservation. Mygarden is my sanctuary.”

Winter offers time for planning new borders and allows gardeners time to do jobs little by little, he says. “The great thing about winter is that things move slowly in the garden and we have a chance to

catch up. It’s not all about tidying, though there is some of that to do - border perennials to cut back (I like to leave some old foliage on in winter to help insects and birds), the last of the leaves to clear up and compost.

“I lightly fork over the earth between plants in early spring, working in a sprinkling of blood, fish and bone and then, among shrubs in particular, I mulch with chipped bark to seal in moisture and keep down weeds.”Winter is a great time to take a long, hard look at the garden and work out where there are gaps in terms of interest, he reflects.

Deciduous trees and shrubs are best planted now (provided the soil is not waterlogged or frozen) to give them a head start in spring, while perennials should be ordered now for planting in early spring so that

but good architectural value and some of the upright varieties, such as M. x media ‘Charity’, which bears vivid yellow flower spikes in winter, make good barriers against intruders. Others, such as M. japonica, which grows to 2m (6ft), make useful plants for a woodland edge or shrub border in shade. For a later-flowering variety, try M. aquifolium ‘Apollo’, which bears

Be warned, though, it’s an invasive perennial with deep roots that regrow when they’re broken off and, once established, can be as difficult to get rid of as ground elder. Grow it in a bottomless bucket sunk into the ground with its rim about an inch above the surface so that the roots don’t spread up there and to keep clumps in check.

the year can get off to a flying start.

If the ground’s too hard or wet to work on, curl up on a winter’s evening with some seed catalogues and work out what you want to grow this year, making your order quickly for the best selection, he suggests.

If you’re creating a new veg plot, decide what you like eating and how much space such crops will take up. Then work out sowing and harvesting times so that the best use is made of your veg patch.

“Order your seeds early and store them in a shoe-box in order of sowing times,” he advises. “Don’t sow too much of quick-maturing crops such as lettuce and radish at the same time, but make smaller sowings every few weeks to ensure a succession of tender young crops.”

Indoors in January and February, you can sow geranium (pelargonium) seeds early - they take a long while to grow and will flower sooner if they are raised on a warm windowsill. Sprout seed potatoes so that they get off to a flying start when they are planted out later.

At the Ideal Home Show 2012, itchmarsh will be judging the Ideal Young Gardeners of the Year competition in which six colleges go head to head to create sustainable show gardens.

“We need to do much more to promote horticulture as a career and to pass on our gardening skills. It is the most rewarding of jobs, tough at times, yes, but one which allows us to do our bit for the future of the planet.”

The Ideal Home Show at London’s Earls Court runs from March 16 to April 1. To book tickets, visit www.idealhomeshow.co.uk or call 0844 858 6763.

clump. Let the plants grow for two years before harvesting. Dig up one plant in September or October, using the biggest roots for the kitchen and cutting off one of the thinner roots to replant.

THREE WAYS TO... DISPOSE OF YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE

1. Ring your local authority, which may provide a disposal service if you leave the tree out with your recycling bins, or will give you details of local household recycling centres where you can drop off the tree.

2. Invest in a good quality saw, such as Bosch’s new Keo cordless garden saw, and a shredder, to cut up the tree and then shred it into a mulch to place on top of beds and borders.

3. If you bought a container-grown tree, grown for at least one season in its pot and rarely taller than 1m (3ft), it can either be planted out with a very good chance of success or re-potted into a larger pot to continue growing.

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK

Continue to take root cuttings of acanthus, Oriental poppy, phlox and verbascums.

Continue to keep bird feeders and troughs topped up with bird food and water.

Keep the strong, whippy shoots of apple tree prunings to support bulbs later in the season.

Bring container-grown shrubs such as viburnum, rose and deutzia into the greenhouse for forcing, maintaining a minimum temperature of 13C (55F).

Sow sweet peas in deep pots under glass.

Protect hairy-leaved alpines from winter wet with an open-ended cloche.

Plant bare-rooted roses as soon as they are delivered.

Firm down plants which have been lifted by frost.

Bring pots of herbs indoors for use in the kitchen.

Continue to harvest parsnips, kale and winter cabbages.

Protect shrubs of borderline hardiness with layers of fleece or netting if frost threatens.

Plant shallots and Jerusalem artichokes.

Sow celery in a heated propagator.

clusters of scented, acid-yellow flowers in spring. All of the popular varieties are easy to grow and are not fussy about soil type.

GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT - HORSERADISH

If you’ve loved horseradish with your roast beef this winter, why not try growing your own for an eye-poppingly hot accompaniment?

Only the root of horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) is used. Buy plants from specialist herb nurseries, or some seed companies offer roots in their autumn catalogues for planting up in late winter or early spring. Make a hole in the soil with a dibber and push a single root into it, thickest end uppermost, leaving the tip at ground level. Plant three roots about 60cm apart for a good

When I was young and living in the wilds of Lancashire, our garden was dominated by blackcurrant bushes. In spring the garden looked absolutely fantastic, but this was small consolation for while the blackcurrant sandwiches were scrummy, the rest of the year was spent staring out over complete blandness. Perhaps it was a deep seated desire to escape from a garden dominated by soft fruit that led me to a career in gardens! I am in the enviable position of spending much of my week looking at gardens that people want to change. While the reasons for change are varied, the processes we guide them through are similar, so here’s my insider’s guide to stage one of achieving your dream garden.

Now that winter is really beginning to set in it is the ideal time to sit back and do some real planning ready for the spring. The initial meeting with your landscape gardener is so important. Clients vary from knowing exactly their own requirements to not having a clue, which is fine, but it is always good to have a ‘wish list’ in mind. Structure plays a big part in a garden, so don’t be fooled by abundance of colour in late spring. I try to imagine the view once the leaves are off the trees and the frost has had a go. Would I need Prozac to get

me through January or would I be out there enjoying the maze and winter walk? The element of surprise is paramount in a garden and being unable to see all the boundaries from the outset is often an advantage, making the site seem bigger.

A good designer needs a brief and by asking many questions on lifestyle, plans, ages of family members and the amount of time available for maintenance an outline begins to appear.

Next it’s time for a survey. Ranging from a back of the envelope, paced out sketch to a full survey complete with satellite positioning, logging the exact position of every gnome, or often a cost effective middle ground is to mark the position of everything using a laser level. Don’t forget planning regulations too! Mood boards are great and just as applicable for the garden designer as for the interior designer. They help give a visual of material and plant

combinations and vary from plain, chic or angular through to pastel coloured soft and rustic. Client input at this stage is very useful and should be a lot of fun, get the whole family involved! Armed with all the information, and in my case a jar of pickles (every designer has their own quirks!), a concept plan or two will be created. With plans, mood boards, 3D models and samples, the designer then paints the perfect picture to the client, together with a budget. This can take 2 - 4 weeks depending upon the size and complexity of your project.

The plan is then mulled over, in conjunction with hand drawn sketches and Photoshop impressions and any changes and modifications highlighted. Back to the darkened room with the pickles to finalise the design and a detailed planting plan. All the hard work at this stage will pay dividends!

MAGNIFICENT PRESERVATIONW I T H H E R I T A G E W I N D O W S

r & Mrs Burleigh wanted to replace their ageing original steel windows, while preserving their

magnificent oak existing wood window frames, but had held the project up because they didn’t know who to go to. They wanted to replicate the appearance of their original metal window frames but at the same time get all the benefits of modern double glazing.

The Burleighs’ preference was also to deal with an established family business who employ craftsmen as fitters, with the carpentry skills necessary to carefully replace the individual windows set within timber surrounds.

The Heritage Window Company were chosen for the project, because their “Benenden” TM is the slimmest aluminium window available in the market, designed to replicate original metal window frame designs. Finished in a tough polyester paint finish with black antique leaded sealed units and key locking handles ‘The Benenden’ range successfully preserved a fine property (see

attached photographs).Unlike bulky plastic window systems, the elegant “Benenden” allows properties in Conservation Areas to retain their original

charm. The “Benenden” even accommodates single glazed

authentic leaded lights which can satisfy the restrictions imposed by the custodians of English Heritage.

The main material used to

manufacture The “Benenden” is aluminium and it is generally

H O U S EGARDEN

considered, unlike PVCu, to be a green material, in that it is surface mined from bauxite and is easily recycled.

The “Benenden” window features the very best low energy glass used to produce an efficient window which complies fully with current and pending Building Regulations.

Speaking to the Burleighs recently they said: “We are delighted with our investment. The Heritage Window Company are a first rate company and we would whole heartedly recommend them to anyone”.

SONIA RYKIEL MAISON 2012 HOME AccESSORIES cOLLEctION

In May 1968, Sonia Rykiel founded her fashion label and opened her

first boutique in Rue de Grenelle, on the Left Bank in Paris. She transformed the sweater into her signature item and was appointed the fashion world’s “Queen of Knitwear” by the Women’s Wear Daily magazine in 1970. In quick succession

Sonia invented inside-

pastel striped linen gently floating and filtering the air; ‘Envoutant’ in dark and brilliant cotton and silk damask and ‘Lin d’Argent’, linen shimmering with a thread of silver and a flash of light to illuminate the texture

The ‘Chouchou’ cushion is ultra feminine and sensual in silk damask ‘Rue Saint-Simon’ fabric or enchanting in ‘Saint-Germain’ with sophisticated stripes while the ‘Froufrou’ taffeta cushions are flirty, tactile and seductive in sugar almond colours ...

Like an Italian still life painting, the delicious ‘Api’, ‘William’ and’Muscat’ 100% wool cushions are embroidered with apples, pears and grapes.

Jewel-like ‘Exclusif ’ cushions in velvet are special treasures adorned with crystals and the hyper confidential, ‘Doudou’ cushion is in luscious satin with a crystal zip to slide love letters or other secrets inside ...

Sweet pastel coloured stripes are scattered on the soft and enveloping mohair throw ‘Guimauve’ with matching ‘Roudoudou’ cushions

‘Elle’ and ‘Lui’, are cube shaped poufs, chic in ‘St Germain’ stripes or playful patchwork

And last but certainly not least, the over-sized cushion ‘Tricot’ is just like curling up with a Sonia Rykiel sweater ... at home. Prices from £81.00 - £468.00For stockists of SONIA RYKIEL MAISON, readers should contact LELIEVRE on0207 352 4798 or visit www.lelievre.eu

out stitching, no-hem, and ‘unlined’ pieces that reflected a brand new philosophy: ‘la démode’, or ‘un-fashion’. She believed in a total-look adapted to a woman’s individual personality and created a unique style that is recognized the world over, whose key motifs are black, stripes, lace, crystals and written messages.

On the 40th anniversary of her fashion house there was a tribute show in Paris by 30 designers including Jean-Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld and Christian Lacroix showing Sonia Rykiel inspired outfits, Her daughter Nathalie is now Creative Director and CEO of the company, taking it from strength to strength.

A spirit of rebellion and Rykiel are inextricably linked and the brazen stripes, seductive textures and humour are now evident in the SONIA RYKIEL MAISON collection of fabrics and accessories for the home.

The collection for 2012 includes ready-made curtains - ‘Sorbet’ with delicious

It is often assumed by joint purchasers that in cases where they wish to dispose of a property which they co-own

the proceeds of sale would be divided equally between them. Recent case law shows that this presumption, whilst usually correct, can be rebutted where one of the co-owners believes that they are entitled to more than an equal share. Unmarried co-owners must rely on trust law rather than legislation in such cases which may mean resorting to costly legal proceedings to decide the correct ownership.

This loss of certainty does not only affect unmarried, cohabiting couples but could also be relevant where:

An investment property is purchased by two or more people Parents provide a lump sum to assist an unmarried child to purchase a property with their partner A couple have separated and one leaves the property but wishes to retain their interest

If two or more people purchase property in their joint names without making a formal declaration as to

their respective shares in the property and one party seeks to dispute the presumption of equal shares then

the Court will use available evidence to determine the parties’ intentions as to the ownership of the property.

Crucially the Court may find that this intention, for a variety of reasons, changes during the period of ownership. If no such evidence is available the Court will establish what is “fair”.

A declaration of trust made at the outset of the purchase outlining your shares in the property, including details of how the initial lump sum, professional fees and mortgage repayments are to be divided, offers the comfort of greater certainty. If anything other than an equal split is proposed then a declaration of trust is especially advisable. Crucially the declaration should be reviewed whenever the co-owners’ circumstances change, for example if one party becomes unable to meet his/her share of the mortgage repayments. Even where the property is initially intended to be shared equally, by the time the property is sold the analysis of the ownership may not be able to be predicted with such certainty.

Our experienced Residential Property team at Barlow Robbins Solicitors can advise you on these and related issues. Please contact us on 01483 562901.

This is the first image of the royal barge that will carry the Queen down the River Thames during her Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year.

The vessel will lead a 1,000-strong flotilla along the river on 3rd

June, as the monarch marks 60 years on the throne. She will be joined by her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and other members of the Royal Family.

The barge will be adorned with flowers from the Queen’s gardens. The monarch and her husband will be seated on ornate chairs under a gold canopy as the vessel, the Spirit of Chartwell, cruises down the Thames.

In a nod to the richly decorated royal barges of the 17th and 18th centuries, the sides of the craft will be decorated with red drapes, while the Queen’s cipher and a crown will be displayed on the bow.

The floral displays will feature a red, gold and purple colour scheme and will be created by horticulturist Rachel de Thame, who appears on BBC Two show Gardeners’ World.

The project to transform

The

the Spirit of Chartwell into the royal barge is being led by designer Joseph Bennett.

Donated for the occasion by owner Philip Morrell, the vessel is 64 metres long and has a top speed of 11 knots.

Mr Morrell said: “As the Spirit of Chartwell evolved, I knew we had built something special - ideal, I thought, for the carriage of royalty, but little did I even vaguely suspect that in the course of one short year we should be graced with such an honour.”

The barge will lead 1,000 other craft east along the Thames from Battersea to Tower Bridge.

Adrian Evans, pageant master for the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, said “The royal barge must be a jewel - the most magnificent vessel in the flotilla.

“Joseph and Rachel have come up with a truly inspiring design, one that references the coronation, the Commonwealth, the gold state coach and all the traditions of royal barges on the Thames, while creating something

that is distinct and modern.”The organisers of the event

are assessing all the entries that applied to join the pageant and those who are successful would have been told by the end of 2011.
