What Can I Do for Them? Typically, when talking or studying about elders we try to
uncover their responsibility to God and the church. That is
surely an important part of the their work. But today, on
the occasion of our appointing three new shepherds, I’d like
for us to think about our responsibility to the elders.
Pray for them! This should simply be part of our daily
routine. Pray for the health of the elders and their fami-
lies. Pray for them to have wisdom, discernment, good
judgment and understanding (Colossians 1:9).
Encourage Them! If we are not careful, we as members,
can treat the elders as a “complaint department” . Always
telling them what we don’t like but never approaching with
an encouraging word. Change that starting today (1 Thess.
5:11).
Love Them! The shepherds at Westwood all love the
church. It is seen in their actions and heard in their words.
Let’s be sure we love them as well. Loving them means be-
ing kind and forgiving, helping them and uplifting them (1
John 4:11).
Help Them Serve with Joy! Hebrews 13:17 reminds us to
help our elders so that they can serve with “joy and not
grief”. Living lives that imitate Jesus will ensure our shep-
herds serving with joy!
We are proud to welcome Tim (Beth) Deason, Terry (Patty) Boyd and Glenn (Vickie) Mitchell to the leadership
team here at Westwood. May God bless them, and our pre-
sent shepherds, deacons, and ministry staff to always seek
the kingdom first and lead as the Chief Shepherd leads us!
God is Good All the Time! Richard
Winterfest Thoughts... Winterfest was awesome again this year. It is always
such a blessing to have a weekend to go and to be
renewed through this retreat. This year we had 35 teen-
agers including Westwood teens and their friends. We
also had 15 adults go and 1 kid. So this year we took 51
to Winterfest. Trips like this are not possible without such
great adults and without great attitudes and coopera-
tion from our teenagers. I want to thank all of them for
making it a special weekend. We spent the weekend
focusing on IDENTITY. I hope that our students and
even our chaperones were able to refocus on their
true identity as children of God.

Reflections
C.S. Lewis is a name many of us recognize. He was a teacher at Oxford and Cambridge, an ex-
pert in Medieval and Renaissance literature, a writer of science fiction and children’s books. He
was also a brilliant Christian Apologist with several published works on the topic. Lewis was a
devout atheist until his middle thirties when he became a devout believer. Incidentally, he died
on the same day in 1963 when President Kennedy was assassinated.
As part of Lewis’ case for the Christian Faith, he wrote on the question of “Who is Christ?”
Lewis reasoned that when Christ claimed to be God, He was either telling the truth, or He was insane, or He was a liar.
Lewis insisted that Christ was not insane and He was not a liar. Therefore, His claims must be the truth. This logical
argument is sometimes known as “the Trilemma.”
Jesus made some unique claims about Himself. Jesus said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). “And he who sees
me sees Him who sent me” (John 12:45). “And Jesus came and said to them All authority in heaven and on earth has
been given to me” (Matthew 28:18).
Like Lewis, we cannot afford to ignore Christ’s claims.

I am having a hard time coping with his passing. Love, Sarah Young

On the Lighter Side
First Job Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Officer asks a young engineer fresh out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “And what starting salary are you looking for?” The engineer replies, “In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package.” The interviewer inquires, “Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holi-days, full medical and dental coverage, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?” The engineer sits up straight and says, “Wow! Are you kidding?” The interviewer replies, “Yeah, but you started it!”
