HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE

Easter Breakfast between Services

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,In his autobiography A Song of Ascents (Nashville:

Abingdon Press, 1968), Methodist missionary in Africa Earl Stanley Jones tells of a man who changed his mid-dle name to “After” immediately following his conver-sion to the Christian faith. The man believed that since his life had new meaning after Jesus Christ, his name ought to reflect the new reality he was now living.

After the cross of Good Friday and Easter’s empty tomb, can anything ever be the same for us? The Easter shout, “Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!” is the shout of every believer who bears the name of Christ. St. Paul describes the “after life” of the baptized believer this way, “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in new-ness of life” (Rom 6:3-4).

Walking in this “new life” doesn’t mean the chal-lenges, disappointments, and hardships of life magical-ly pass over us as God’s “After” people. It does, how-ever, mean that by the grace and power of God, “After” people see all of life through different eyes. Looking

through eyes of faith we no longer trust in our own powers of positive thinking, but look to the promises of God in Jesus Christ.

President Calvin Coolidge was a very quiet and serious person. When he was informed of President Coolidge’s death in 1933, author and social critic H. L. Mencken responded, “How can they tell?”

How do others see we are God’s “After” people? Being lively “After” people doesn’t mean we must be the “life of the party” or someone who is always visibly “excited” about Jesus. But being an “After” Christian is also far more than church membership or wearing a particular denominational label.

God’s “After” people are disciples of Jesus who, touched by the fullness of God’s grace, celebrate all of life as an opportunity to worship God, to grow in faith, to give generously, and serve others to the glory of God.

Easter Sunday is April 8th this year. We will worship our Risen Lord Jesus on that morning and throughout the season of Easter that leads us to Pentecost.

It truly is a miracle. Nothing can ever be the same for us “After” people of God.

With you ever “After”, Pastor Will

of topics. If you have a question, please put it in writ-ing and deliver it to the Church Office or email it to: [email protected]. Questions must be signed.

Question: What’s involved in having a wedding at Grace?

It’s an understatement to say a couple’s wedding day is one of the biggest days in their lives. It’s no less an un-derstatement that a couple’s wedding day is often among their or their families’ biggest financial expenditures. Weddings have become “big business” in our culture.

The first thing a couple needs to do to be married at Grace is to contact one of Grace’s pastors by calling the Church Office (882-3026). Grace’s pastors and other staff involved with weddings have written a pamphlet titled “Your Wedding at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church”. This pamphlet addresses such details as: how to secure a date, the rehearsal, appropriate music, whether or not Holy Communion will be celebrated, wedding coordinator, flowers and decorations, wed-ding bulletins, as well as matters directly related to the

wedding day itself. A separate flyer outlines the costs/fees associated with a wedding at Grace.

Other than under certain extenuating circumstances, it is Pastor Hartfelder’s and Pastor Walston’s practice to officiate at weddings of members only. They also require a series of premarital sessions in preparation for the wedding.

Grace’s pastors are trained in the Life Innovations© premarital counseling program Prepare-Enrich© and require it of all couples. The program is based on a set of inventories that examine major relationship issues a couple may experience. The inventories include 3-5 feedback sessions in which the pastor facilitates dis-cussion between the couple based on their inventory results. Premarital meetings also include conversa-tions about the wedding service itself.

Marriage is one of life’s most important passages. The Christian Wedding Ceremony is a moment of spe-cial spiritual meaning and celebration. As personal as a wedding is, however, it is a worship service of the Church. Accordingly, Grace’s pastors have primary responsibility for assuring that the wedding ceremony reflects the faith, teachings and traditions of the church as well as providing a ceremony that celebrates the love of the bridal couple.

Growing People of FaithPrayer Vigil

Grace Lutheran ChurchNoon, Friday, May 11 throughNoon, Saturday, May 12, 2012

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstancesfor this is God’s will for you in

Christ Jesus.”1 Thessalonians 5: 16 – 18 (NIV)

Growing People of Faith is the mission of Grace’s next capital fund campaign. Walking through prayer-ful conversation with God brings guidance for fulfill-ing our call to stewardship.

Growing People of Faith is also the vision for living and sharing together as God carries Grace into its sec-ond century of service. Prayer deepens relationships with God and with one another for reaching out, grow-ing and serving with lives faithful to God’s call.

All are invited and encouraged to participate in the May Prayer Vigil. Hourly blocks of time will be avail-able throughout the entire 24-hour Vigil for individual and family silent meditation, spiritual reflection and peaceful listening amid the tranquility of God’s Water, Word, Table and Cross adorning the Grace Worship Space.

Grace Ministry Teams will gather throughout the Church and the Community during the same hours connecting in fellowship and lifting prayers for each other, for the Grace Community and for discerning God’s guidance for their Leadership within the People called Grace.

Further information will be shared throughout April concerning sign-up opportunities and participation through prayer requests.

Please join in lifting all the ministries and people of Grace in daily prayer.

We ask Gracious Heavenly Father,That you continue to guide us in growing spir-

itually; That you open our hearts to joyful and gener-

ous stewardship; That you lead us to act at all times with love, upholding and uplifting one another; That you teach us to seek serving rather than to

be served; andThat you continue Growing People of Faith

who walk ever closer with You. Amen

Westerville South Athletic TrainerBill Kulju Named to OATA Hall of Fame

William Kulju, athletic trainer at Westerville South High School, was recently named to the Ohio Athletic Trainers’ As-sociation (OATA) Hall of Fame. His induction will take place at the OATA Symposium and Awards Banquet in Akron on May 11. Can-didates for this prestigious award are nominated by their peers, mak-ing this a most revered honor.

After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University (OSU) in 1979, Kulju started his athletic training and teaching career at Westerville South. He earned his Masters degree from OSU in 1984. He has been very active in the Ohio Athletic Trainers’ As-sociation, having served as District Representative, Treasurer, President-elect, President and Immediate Past President. He also served on many OATA com-mittees such as PEC, High School, Finance, PAC and Executive. He had received a number of awards in-cluding the OATA Athletic Trainer of the Year in 1996; the NATA Service Award in 2003; and the OATA Lin-da Weber Daniel Outstanding Mentorship Award in 2008. In addition, Kulju served on the NATA Annual Symposium Committee in 1987 and was Local Chair to the GLATA Winter Symposium in 2002.

Kulju is a driving force in the growth and develop-ment of the OATA. He has had great impact within the organization as well as with public and political groups. He continues to support and promote athletic training within the OATA as well as at the district and national level.

Many letters of support for his induction into the Hall of Fame were received by the OATA. Kulju’s colleagues wrote, “His commitment to the staff, stu-dent athletes and students he works with is just above and beyond. Working with Bill makes those around him want to be a better athletic trainer, a better friend, and a better person.” And, “Mr. Kulju is a leader in our school, regarded as a professional and a teacher’s teacher. He has the ability to work well with all col-leagues … He is a tremendous person, one who we all look to for intelligent remarks, sound judgment and effective leadership.”source: Westerville School District Newsletter.

NOTE: Bill Kulju is a long time member of Grace and presently serves our congregation as the President of the Church Council.

SUNDAY ADULT LEARNING

Pastor Hartfelder meets with adult learners every Sunday between services for study and conversa-tion on the appointed Bible read-ings for that particular Sunday. The group meets in Rose Garden #2 and #3. This study provides insight to the church calendar as well as how and why these read-ing from the books of the old and new testaments, the Psalms, and Gospel are woven together into the liturgy. Bring your Bible for this class.

Pastor Daniel Havemann, pas-tor of Grace’s “Partnergemeinde” - partner church – in Jördenstorf, Germany, will present a fascinat-ing look at mission and ministry in Germany during the Sunday School Hour on April 15. He will also offer words about his congregation’s on-going efforts to restore their church roof. Pastor Havemann’s church dates back to the 13th century.
