Kids look forward to summer vacation - a time to sleep in, relax, stay up late, no homework, no teachers, no classroom, and no books. However, all of that down time during summer may not be beneifi-cial to your child's next school year.

Barbara Dianis, an education mentor for over 21 years, Founder and CEO of Dianis Educational Systems, and author of the new book Don’t Count Me Out!, says continuing to review old concepts, learn-ing new ones, and stretching the mind during summer break is im-perative to students entering the next school year prepared.

Barbara outlines 7 tips for setting your student up for summer suc-cess:

1. Set aside time for your student to read each day during summer break – 15 to 30 minutes is all it takes, and the time will fly by!2. Students should practice affixes and vocabulary words to help improve their reading and spelling skills – make it a fun game by putting together flashcards.3. Work on 3-4 math problems a day that the student learned during the previous school year so their mathematical skills don’t get rusty.4. To improve reading comprehension, consider offering your child or teenager a reading comprehension workbook, which will test them with self-quizzes.5. Review the past grade level’s grammar concepts and begin to work on the next year’s concepts – 2-4 grammar lessons a week will do.6. Have your student write a creative paragraph each week – it will improve their written language skills and is a fun and creative activity!7. Pinpoint the subject that your child had the most trouble with the previous school year and make sure to work in some prac-tice in this area each day.

By following the simple steps above, your child will enter the new school year feeling refreshed and confident – part of what Dianis says is such an important part of restoring our students’ “academic self-esteem!” Don’t Count Me Out! can be purchased from www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com, www.lulu.com, and www.dianiseduca-tion.com.

Barbara Dianis, MA ED, overcame dyslexia in her own life using self-taught strategies and techniques. She went on to earn a BA Degree in

Education and Special Education, as well as a multiple Master’s Degrees.

Life is so fast-paced in today’s world, even children are multi-tasking – doing home-work in the car while eating dinner on the way to practice. Does this sound familiar? Summer is a time to slow down and relax a little. Sometimes the simplest things can be a fun and memorable experience. Most parents will recognize some of these activities as things they did as a child. These are fifteen simple things you must do this summer with your kids.

Pack a picnic lunch and a blanket, then go outside to eat.1. Roast marshmallows over a fire pit.2. Catch fireflies. (Be sure to release them back into the night.)3. Take a day trip to someplace you have never been or go to a favorite place.4. Take a nap under a shade tree on a blanket.5. Splash in a cool stream.6. Hang your laundry outside to dry – it is amazing how fresh it will smell after 7.

blowing in the breeze all day. Play in the rain.8. Make Sun Tea or Sun Lemon-aid (for kids who may not like tea).9. Make your own freeze pops with kool-aid and ice trays. 10. Lie in the grass and find shapes in the clouds. 11. From a safe place, watch a thunder storm move in. Be at awe with the power 12.

of nature.Sit on the bank of a stream or river, and listen to the songs of the water.13. Make a blanket tent outside between the trees, on the deck or porch, or on the 14.

trampoline.Sit on the porch step and eat watermelon. Go ahead, let the juice run down to 15.

Effective July 9, 2013, failure to wear a seat belt will be a primary offense. This law

allows police to pull over motorists if the driver or passengers aren't wearing seat belts.

West Virginia joins 30 other states that have elevated seat belt laws.

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin said in a news release, "Buckling your seat belt is one of the easiest lifesaving precautions you can take, helping ensure your safety on the road. This bill is expected to save 17 lives each year and prevent 184 serious injuries."

Family Safety

Enjoy The Rocket’s Red Glare

From Afarby Kiki Bochi

For many families, fireworks are a traditional part of celebrations, especially for Independence Day. But before you strike that match,

safety experts urge you to consider the safety of your children - and yourself.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 15,000 fireworks-related injuries are treated each year in hospitals, doc-tor's offices, clinics, surgery centers and emergency rooms. Injuries to children represent more than half of those accidents. If not handled prop-erly, fireworks can cause burn and eye injuries. They have been known to blow away little fingers and permanently disfigure hands, legs and even faces.

Never allow young children to play with or go near fireworks, including sparklers. They may seem harmless, but sparklers can exceed tempera-tures of more than 1,000 degrees, hot enough to melt gold. Even after they burn out, the metal holder for sparklers remain hot enough to cause a serious burn injury.

The best way to protect your family is not to use any fireworks at home - period. Attend public fireworks displays, and leave the lighting to the professionals.

WV NEW SEAT BELT

LAW

Now that summer is in full swing, stories about home pool or hot tub tragedies are making headlines across the nation.

With millions enjoying their sum-mers by swimming in backyard pools and relaxing in hot tubs, the need for home pool and hot tub safety is ur-gent.

The American Red Cross and Na-tional Swimming Pool Foundation® want all home pool and hot tub own-ers to make safety their priority by following these safety guidelines:

Secure your pool with appropriate 1. barriers. Completely surround your pool with a 4-feet high fence or bar-rier with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Install alarms on any doors leading to the pool that sound when opened unexpectedly. Place a safety

cover on the pool or hot tub when not in use and remove any ladders or steps used for access. Consider in-stalling a pool alarm that goes off if anyone enters the pool.

Keep children under active su-2. pervision at all times. Stay in arm’s reach of young children. Designate a responsible person to watch the water when people are in the pool—never allow anyone to swim alone. Have young or inexperienced swimmers wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

Ensure everyone in the home 3. knows how to swim well by enrolling them in age-appropriate water orien-tation and learn-to-swim courses.

Keep your pool or hot tub water 4. clean and clear. Use proper chemi-cal levels, circulation and filtration. Regularly test and adjust the chemi-cal levels to minimize the risk of

earaches, rashes or more serious dis-eases.

Establish and enforce rules and safe 5. behaviors, such as “no diving,” “stay away from drain covers,” “swim with a buddy” and “walk please.”

Ensure everyone in the home 6. knows how to respond to aquatic emergencies by having appropriate safety equipment and taking water safety, first aid and CPR courses from the Red Cross.

Enroll in the two-hour Home 7. Pool Essentials online course (www.HomePoolEssentials.org ) for only $19.95. This class describes steps you can take to help prevent tragedy and how to care for your pool and hot tub. It includes a 30-page resource guide and six months access to the site.

Outdoor Dog Games Exercise For You and Him

As the days grow lon-ger and warmer, we

look forward to outdoor fun. Organized play with your dog is a great way to bond, teach obedience, channel his energy, and get exercise.

Start out with short ses-sions and frequent breaks. Play in your own yard to start, then move your games to a park, when other dogs and people do not distract him. If your dog gets bored, take a break and try later. Be sure to establish rules and cor-rect any nipping, biting, jumping, or aggression. These behaviors are sometimes caused by overex-citement. If they occur - stop the game, take a break, and resume later. Play time should be fun time. Try these games and activi-ties during your play time.

Freshen up on Obedience ;Training. Work on common com-mands such as sit, stay, come, etc. Give lots of praise! When those are mastered, try new or more ad-vanced commands such as down, roll over, circle, jump, etc...

Create an Obstacle Course. ;Make your own or try a starter kit. (See item 1). Start by using a leash and walk with your dog through the course. Give lots of praise. As he learns the course, you can remove the leash.

Play Fetch. Retriev- ;ing a ball or stick is something most dogs love and will eagerly play again and again. Be sure the item is pet safe. Launch-A-Ball is a launching device that helps you throw the ball. (See item 2.)

Cool Pool Fun. On a hot sum- ;mer day, fill a kiddie pool with water. After getting your dog involved in fetch, throw a ball in the pool. Some dogs may be hesitant or afraid of the water. Do not force the pool idea, try the next day. If the pool doesn’t inter-est your dog at all, try a sprinkler or water hose game - chase the water stream. Warning: water in kiddie pools and hoses can be-come very hot from the sun.

Organize a walking group or ;find a walking partner. Even if they do not have a dog, it will still be lots of fun and great company. Bring along water and treats for your dog. Portable bowls are easy to pack and carry. (See item 3.)

1. Dog Agility Starter Kit $70.49

2. Launch-A-Ball $9.99

3. Port-A-Bowl $5.49
