THE AGE OF ACTIVITY

A new generation demonstrates it may be possible to stay younger, longer.

Forget about toasted teacakes and taking it easy - life now starts at seventy plus.According to a recent survey, more of us are staying amazingly active in old age, leading to a rise in longevity. The latest figures from the Department of Work and Pensions show average life expectancy to be on an upward trajectory. Moreover, approximately 900,000 people over 65 will live to be 100.So, what’s the secret to a longer, lovelier life? Well,

according to most experts, a healthy lifestyle is important as well as a positive mental attitude. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester found that optimistic people decreased their risk of early death by a whopping 50% compared to those with those who leaned more towards pessimism. A youthful mindset also helps. So, kick off those orthopedic slippers and step away from the television - it’s time to set some goals. Many retired people are now running marathons, riding, surfing and playing golf. Even if you can’t exercise, you’re never too old to bring positive energy into your life. You just need to break

routine and embrace change, says life coach Lynda Field. You can start the process by hearing better. After all, our survey reveals that 77% of those questioned enjoyed life more after being tested and treated for hearing loss. Karen Shepherd, an audiologist and our Quality Manager, says: “To fully experience life, hearing well is important. In so many cases hearing loss sufferers withdraw from people and social situations for fear of embarrassment.”

HEAVY PETALFlower shows and garden parties are already filling our diaries. It’s time to become a social bloomer in this season’s statement prints.

Floating chiffons and bold floral prints dominated Dolce & Gabbana’s S/S 2011 collection. Ederm offered more statement and structure. Meanwhile, both Mulberry and Peter Som embraced petal power, using texture as their nod to the pastoral trend. On the high street, most of the stores are selling wearable floral pieces at great prices. We adore Matalan’s flared 1950s skirts, while Monsoon’s chiffon dresses are perfect for garden parties. This dress from East (right), however, is perfect for both informal and casual occasions. Just make sure you keep the accessories simple. The statement, after all, is in the print.

Satchels are the bags for men to be seen with this summer.

Reflecting the fashion trend for all things ‘preppy’, designers have come up with a range of tweed, leather and PU satchels.Worn dangling from the shoulder, across the chest or

in the case of cyclists, slung across the back, they are the accessory du jour. They may look like oversized versions of the ubiquitous school satchels carried by kids in the sixties, but when it comes to style, they certainly look better than a briefcase - or - shock, horror, a plastic bag! Here’s a selection from blokesbags.com >>

THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPESTForget a nip and a cut – turn back time with healthy looking hair.

Over the years you’ve been teased and tormented – and then there’s your hair. Styling, stress and genetic ageing can leave your locks looking grey, fine and lackluster. But the secrets to younger looking hair are simple - eat well, sleep right and abide by these rules. According to celebrity hairdresser Ryan Jackson, at Zoo Hair Salon in Liverpool, long hair can sometimes age

you faster than short, so get some layers cut into your hair. Also, consider having ‘bangs’ before Botox. “A soft, sweeping fringe draws the focus to your eyes while hiding a lined forehead,” he reveals. When it comes to colour, go for a soft blonde shade. It works well on hair with a high percentage of natural grey that hasn’t whitened fully to silver. Also, beware of UV rays from the sun attacking the proteins in your hair, especially during the hot weather. There are some great products on the market

that reflect these harmful rays. But for maximum sun-screening, wear a hat. “Finally, to prevent over drying, only wash hair that really needs it,” says Ryan. “But invest in conditioner. I recommend Bumble & Bumble’s deep treatment to seal in moisture.”

The E-type caused a sensation when it was launched 50 years ago and still does today.

David Ormerod is not the only iconic brand celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2011. The Geneva Motor Show in 1961 marked the launch of a car that became an instant sensation - the E-type Jaguar. Enzo Ferrari dubbed it “the most beautiful car ever made.”Costing a fraction of the price of most of its peers, the E-type was capable of 150mph, and became the affordable supercar of its era, and one of the defining brands of the swinging sixties.George Best, Brigitte Bardot, Britt Ekland, Tony Curtis and Steve McQueen were among the many celebrity owners of a car that set new standards in automotive design. When Frank Sinatra first saw it, he said: “I want that car, and I want it now.”

An opalescent dark blue 1963 open two seater is now installed as a permanent exhibit in the New York Museum of Modern Art.More than 70,000 E-types were sold over its 14 years in production, and its influence is still apparent in modern Jaguar design. Ian Callum, design director of Jaguar, said: “Here was a car that encapsulated the spirit of the revolutionary era it came to symbolise.”Jaguar is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the E-type at major motoring events throughout 2011, and made a triumphant return to the Geneva Motor Show scene of her debut in March. The E-type is a true collectors’ item, with its own magazine and owners’ club. Of four examples that went for auction at a recent Jaguar Heritage Sale, not one fetched less than £31,000.

HOLIDAY HEAVENPATRICIA Royle was convinced that winning was

down to divine intervention. Before being told that she’d won a week long holiday to the Caribbean, her husband Alan, had passed away. “This is my husband looking down on me,” she gasped. She and her daughter Debra had been nursing Alan for months. Exhausted and

emotional, the prospect of spending an amazing week on Spice Island came as welcome news. We’re over the moon,” added Debra. “We think my Dad had a hand in it because our entry was drawn the day after he died. He thought we needed a rest because we

nursed him at home.”

Patricia,75, said that she had never won anything in her

life before, least of all a luxury holiday. She entered the competition after purchasing a new hearing aid at one of David Ormerod Hearing Centres (DOHC). Now, not only can she hear better but she can also indulge her senses on a sun soaked island, courtesy

of DOHC.“My new hearing aids have changed my life,” she said of her new Audeo Smart S aids. “I can actually hear what people are saying, something I couldn’t do before. I can even hear my daughter whispering.“When my late husband

Alan, was very ill, my hearing seemed to

disintegrate. I don’t know whether it was stress but I

just couldn’t hear anything. But being able to listen and talk to people is very important. You feel very isolated when you lose your hearing. You start guessing what people are saying and making up answers.”Despite having worn the new aids for less than a week,

Patricia from Wallasey, has taken to them straight away.“The technology’s amazing and they look very discrete, barely noticeable in fact,” she said, demonstrating the fact by flipping up her hair to reveal her ears. “I’m really pleased that can wear my glasses with them. They

don’t discommode me at all.”

Breakfast at Tiffany’s hit the big screen, the E-type Jaguar was launched and the Beatles performed for the first time at the legendary Cavern Club in Liverpool. 1961 was an amazing year, not least because David Ormerod Hearing Centres opened its first shop. Just in case you didn’t get the hint in that last paragraph – it’s our birthday. We’re 50 years old in October - and to celebrate, we’ll be creating a special edition magazine filled with fascinating features, an interview with Jensen Button and thousands of pounds worth of prizes. And what’s a

birthday without a party? So, throughout our anniversary month, we’ll be hosting a series of events up and down the country. Other fun activities include online audio adventures, a retro photo shoot with top model Alex Leigh and a host of new community initiatives.

Of course, we’re so excited about being 50 that we’ve started the celebrations early. Birthday displays are already in store - and this month marks the start of our half-price sale, featuring oodles of hearing related bargains (see page 16). It’s our way of thanking you for your support and custom.

HOW TWITTER WORKS

Is it easy to do? Absolutely! Just Log on to twitter.com, open a free account and seconds later you can tweet.

What’s a tweet? A 140-character micro blog. Who reads it? Whichever fellow tweeters choose to “follow” you. You can also “follow” other users. This becomes your network. Be warned though, others can see what you write unless you mark it private.

Is it live? Yes. Posts are loaded in real time, so you can communicate instantaneously.

How do I do it? From a phone or a computer.

How do I attract followers? You need to invest time in engaging with people. Take an interest in what people write, ask questions and post interesting information.

It’s everywhere – on television, on your mobile phone and on business cards. We explore the online tool that’s changed the way we communicate.

We’ve deprived the world of daily updates on hearing for far too long. That’s why we’ve just joined the Twitterati set. For those of you who’ve never heard of Twitter - it’s the social networking site du jour. It enables its users to send and read messages called tweets. These are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user's profile page.

Twitter has more than 20o million users, including everyone who is anyone – from Barack Obama and David Cameron to Stephen Fry and David Ormerod, of course!.“Twitter has changed the way we communicate, build relationships and connect with one another,” says Keith Willis, director of Marketing at David Ormerod Hearing Centres. “Customer care lies at the heart of what we do, that’s why we decided to get involved.”
