After all, the growth and develop-ment of the city is part of what the celebration is about. And with a reminiscent attitude of

last years paradise theme, some fun in the sun, delicious foods and the bright colors of the highlighted hot rods rolling through town, the celebra-tion is sure to be a great time. Its the kick-off to summer, says

Jen Baltes, vice president of the Cel-ebrate West St. Paul board of directors. Its a brand new theme, and it ties in really well with the city and all the car

shows that go on here.On any given weekend, she says, res-

idents can spot shiny vintage, collect-ible and antique cars cruising up and down city streets. Why not celebrate that? she says.Dave Wenda, president of the board,

confirms that it really is the start to the summer season of community cel-ebrations. By having [the festival] early in the

year like this, we also get more out-of-

PREPARE TO CRUISE WEST ST. PAULThis year the 25th annual Celebrate West St. Paul Days is themed Cruisin in West St. Paul. The fact that the

cruising will be slowed just a bit by the South Robert

Street construction project is an irony the festival

    organizers wish to embrace.

town residents to come to our city, Wenda says. And were not competing against anybody else. With the event running Thursday

through Sunday, May 14-17, Wenda says West St. Paul is the first of the summertime festivals, acting sort of as the lead piece in a domino effect, and that theres no other area parade that weekend.West St. Paul is proud to usher in the

    fun.

New theme, same good timeAccording to the board, last years

festival was such a success that not much needed to change this year, as far as activities go. There will be all the traditional events, including the Grand Parade, the Vintage Car Show and the Royalty Street Dance. Most people have to drive, and com-

mutes can be a daily ordeal for folks tired in the morning and even more exhausted in the evening. But a cruise is personal. People

go cruisin for all kinds of reasons. Whether on two wheels or four, cruisin is meant to be pleasurable. And there will be plenty of leisure

cruising to be had, starting with the carnival. If your fancy is fried food, fast rides, or fair games, each activity will be at your fingertips.Hit the food vendors for hot dogs,

mini-doughnuts, root beer floats and much, much more. Forget about a selfie for a time.

Instead cherish a moment with your children, significant other, or friends using a photo booth to capture hugs, smiles or funny faces. If youre feeling lucky, enter raffles

and drawings to win prizes that are sure to make the night a hit. Take a break from the walking, and

throw almost literally your chil-dren into a bouncy house, or watch them slip down tall slides or go on fun rides.

Come one, come all to the carnival!

Theres a lot more going on at the carnival than food, photos and bouncy

Along with running her studio, Corrine used to teach fine arts at Henry Sibley High School in Mendota Heights. During her time there in the 1980s she choreographed musicals and

was an advisor for the Cheerleading and Dance Line programs. She reports shes now teaching the

    grandchildren of former students.

Rockin the barnAfter the grand parade May 16, head

to St. Croix Lutheran High School at 1200 Oakdale Ave. for a family picnic from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Or hop over to Dodge Nature Center

at 1701 Charlton St. The nature cen-ter is inviting folks to its annual farm and music festival from 3 to 7 p.m. Attendees will be able to tour the farm grounds as well as the barn and see live animals up close. Folks will also have the opportunity

to participate in farm chores, play old-fashioned games and enjoy live music, face painting, ice cream and a raffle. For nature center admission pricing and more activity information, visit www.dodgenaturecenter.org or call 651-455-4531.

The car showLets not forget the cruisin inspira-

houses. Show up to see! The carnival will be open Thursday

from 3 to 10 p.m., Friday from 3 to 11 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. at Sig-nal Hills shopping center, 1201 South Robert St., just south of Butler Avenue. Tickets for carnival rides on Satur-

day are $1 each or 25 tickets for $20; or on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, pay $20 for unlimited rides. On Friday, May 15 go to the Cher-

okee Tavern, 886 Smith Ave. S., to watch the Royalty Street Dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Theres a $10 cover charge, or its $5 with a West St. Paul Days button. Royalty will be admitted free.Youll want a good nights sleep on

Friday, because Saturday is the biggest, longest and busiest day at the festival.

Not tradition, not newIf theres one thing you cant miss,

its the West St. Paul Grand Parade on Saturday, the Twin Cities first parade of the season! The parade starts at 1 p.m.The route, while not new, is also not

old. After seeing the success of last years

new route and being satisfied with the results, planners chose to stick with that same course. Starting at Charlton and Butler ave-

nues, the parade will go down But-ler to Smith Avenue, and then down Smith to Annapolis Street, and finally Annapolis back to Charlton, where it will reach its conclusion.Or head over early. At 11 a.m. vis-

iting Royalty will be in the gymna-sium at the Heritage E-STEM Magnet School, 121 Butler Ave. W.

A new familiar faceThis years grand marshal in the

parade is Corrine Martin, a longtime West St. Paul resident. Were always looking for somebody

special, Wenda says. This year a mem-ber of the South Robert Street Business Association suggested Corrine.Corrine Martin is currently enjoy-

ing her 50th year in business in West St. Paul half a century of teaching dance at The Dance Center!Thats a very important thing for us

to acknowledge, says Wenda.Corrines School of Dance, also

known as The Dance Center, is a fam-ily-owned business that Martin began in 1965. Martin, still the owner and artistic director, has been teaching dance there ever since, offering classes in classical ballet, lyrical, tap, jazz, hip-hop, boys classes and Zumba.
