WHS Students Succeed at Fruehlingsfest 2015On March 7 some of West’s German students participated in the annual German Spring Festival, Fruehlingsfest, at the beautiful campus
of Sewanee University. The festival is held at a different Tennessee college or university each year. Students from several different Tennessee
high schools compete in various activities about the German language and the culture of German-speaking countries.
Nick Jernigan placed 3rd with his vocal performance of classical song “Die Beiden Grenadiere” by Schumann. Nick, Jason Frederick, and
Jacob Friedrich also placed 2nd with their Karaoke performance of the Goethe poem “Erlkoenig.” These three gentlemen added a 1st place
win in the Level III/IV vocabulary bee to crown their achievements.
West’s students were accompanied by their German teacher, Ulla Carr, and parent Maria Jernigan. We want to thank Mrs. Jernigan for
investing her time. Everybody had a good time at Sewanee, and we hope to attend next year’s Fruehlingsfest with even more students.
New Science Olympiad Team CompetesThe newly formed West Science Olympiad team recently finished third overall at the regional competition. Freshmen Sydney Closser and
Amy van der Merwe took first place in the Write It/Do It event and second place in Scramble. The state competition is April 11 at UT. Ms.
LaPointe is the teacher advisor.

Band Uniforms: Final PushThe Band is just $4,000 away from reaching their
$32,250 goal for purchasing new uniforms this
fall. If you can make a donation or know of any
businesses or families willing to donate to their
cause, please contact Mr. Lumpkin.
The Show Went OnAfter several cancellations because of the weather, the Theater
Department’s production of Guys and Dolls finally went on.
The show was performed to appreciative audiences once during
its regularly scheduled run in February, and then for two more
performances in March. Bravi!
East Tennessee History Day 2015In February, 13 of West’s National History Day projects, a mandatory freshman-year assignment, were selected by judges to be entered in
the 2015 East Tennessee History Day competition, held at UT in March. West made a superb showing. Several first-, second-, and third-
place medals were awarded. Those who placed first or second will compete at the state level in Nashville on April 11. Ms. Hastings serves as
Teacher Advisor.

20. The play was the premiere of a new stage adaptation of the classic
fantasy novel by Lewis Carroll. Tierney‘s yearlong internship with
the company included work as props mistress, stage manager, and
production manager. In October 2014, she co-directed “The Hound of
The Baskervilles,” choreographing the numerous wordless sequences

Swim and Dive Team NewsAs the month of January came to an end, the West High AquaRebels finished their season strong.
Success was achieved by all members of the Swim and Dive team, placing 6th of 29 schools at the
Knoxville Interscholastic Swim League (KISL) meet, with numerous personal bests. Anna Banick
finished 1st overall in the 100 breast stroke.
In February, the Tennessee Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (TISCA) held the state

Margaret Banick, Olivia Killian, Chey Quinones, Stella Takvoryan, Maggie Wahl, Reese Catron,
Max Hanset, Nick Jernigan, Blair Johnson, Miles Kredich, Jake Tidwell, Cooper Wade, and
Nick Woo. With outstanding performances by the Banick sisters, Chey, and Stella, as well as
5th place for diver Olivia Killian, the Lady AquaRebels held their own among the rest of the
Volunteer state, placing 8th of 129 teams.
Of course, the now famous Aquapellas, under the direction of parent Kim Kredich, opened
finals of the KISL and TISCA meets with a glorious rendition of the national anthem.
Finally, the end-of-year banquet was held at The Lighthouse on February 22. The following awards were given:
• MVP Male- Miles Kredich
• MVP Female- Anna Banick
• Most Dedicated- Jessie Higdon

Our chapter has worked really hard to get to this point, and we would love to keep competing and
showing off what we have learned in our marketing courses. In order to attend the DECA State
Conference in March 2015 and the International Career & Development Conference (ICDC) in
Orlando, Florida, in April 2015, we must pay registration fees, hotel costs, and travel fees, which total
about $300 per person for DECA State and $1000 per person for ICDC. We are currently conducting
various fundraisers in order to raise this money, but we are also asking for sponsorships from some
of our local businesses within Knox County. Our chapter is made up of students from all over Knox
County, and our DECA chapter would like to represent them well at the DECA International Career
& Development Conference. Our chapter would greatly appreciate any donations that you or your
business could make to help us to be able to continue competing. Thank you for your consideration!12
