State Government makes metersmandatory for autos, announcesrevised faresBy Our Staff Reporter

Just two days before theSupreme Court deadline of Aug.27, Tamilnadu Governmentmade using meters mandatoryfor autorickshaws throughoutthe state and has also an-nounced revised fares.

The new fares are Rs. 25 forthe first 1.8 km and Rs. 12 perkm thereafter. The night faresbetween 11 p.m and 5 a.m willbe 50% more than the basefares. The waiting charge hasbeen fixed at Rs. 3.50 for everyfive minutes and Rs. 42 for anhour.

The Auto Drivers Associa-tion has sought time till Sept.15to collect the new rate cardsfrom RTO offices. The deadlinefor calibration of the meter isOct.15.

Two temporary helplinenumbers 2474 9002 and 26744445 have been set up for thebenefit of commuters to lodgecomplaints against erring autodrivers who are reluctant toturn on the meters.

At present, auto drivers areallowed to use the old metersset to the outdated tariff.

However, the departmenthas released a conversionchart that will help the driverand commuter calculate thenew fares over specific dis-tances.

For instance, if the meterreading shows Rs.14 for 2 km,the commuter will have to payaround Rs. 27.40 (25 + 0.2x12);similarly, when the meter indi-cates Rs. 68 for 11 km, the fareto be paid is Rs. 135.40 (25 +9.2x12).

The State government will

also spend around Rs. 80 croresto install GPS-enabled meterswith digital printers in auto-rickshaws. According to a traf-fic official, this will ensure thatcommuters are charged theexact fare and will also enablein monitoring of the location ofthe vehicles in case of an emer-gency.

The meters will also be pro-vided with a panic button thatcommuters can press in caseof any danger or emergency.

The button which will bewired to the GPS will send analert to the police control roomfor assistance.

The State Government hasalso issued a warning that incase any auto driver is caughtovercharging a customer orfound using a tampered meter, his license will be cancelled andthe vehicle seized.

Autorickshaw unions havewelcomed the fact that the newmeter system will help weedout vehicles that run withoutpermits. “There is a plan togive identity cards to the driv-ers. To get the ID and tariffcards, the drivers will have toproduce their permits. Thisprocedure will ensure thatthose who run the vehicle ille-gally, without permits, will beoff the roads,” said J. Sesha-sayanam, general secretary ofthe Madras Metro Auto Driv-ers Association.

Commuters have also givena sigh of relief since they neednot haggle any more with thedrivers over fares. However anumber of them were skepti-cal about the enforcement overthe long run.

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACKTAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 65

Sama Iyer did not make much of an impact on the screenwith ‘Dumbachari’ for the simple reason that an actor doingeleven-quick-change roles was no great shakes in a movie!Critics also felt that the hero Krishnamurthy should not havedone such modern day roles!

Interestingly the title of the play and film Dumbacharibecame an idiomatic expression in Tamil language to denote avain fun-loving spendthrift!

Another popular film of 1935, also based on a successfulstage play, was Ratnavali’ written by one of the foundingfathers of the Renaissance of Tamil theatre, PammalSambandam Mudaliar. AV. Meiyappan produced this film inCalcutta and the now-forgotten pioneer R. Prakash was en-gaged to direct the film. For reasons never disclosed Prakashwalked out of film after the first day’s shooting. The latter-daynoted writer-director A. T. Krishnaswamy made his debut incinema as Assistant Director with this film on a princely salaryof Rs. 35 per month.

Shooting of ‘Ratnavali’ began in Pioneer Studios withKrishnamurthy as the hero and P. S. Ratna Bai and P. S.Saraswathi Bai as the two heroines. They always actedtogether and were paid Rs. 25,000 by Meyyappan, a fortunein 1935.

The sisters were extremely popular and were householdnames. They were very businesslike in their dealings and wouldwork for a period of only 45 days in a picture. If the productiondragged on they had to be paid extra on a pro-rata basis. If theproducer failed to pay in advance on the morning of the 46thday the two women would vanish leaving no trace behind, noteven a whiff of perfume!

Before he walked out of this movie, Prakash noticed an extra(now called ‘junior artiste’ in India), a slim seductive youngwoman, light-skinned with large expressive eyes playing theminor role of a palace maid. Prakash told the assistant directorA. T. Krishnaswamy, “ATK, mark my words, that smart damewill go a long way!” The barely-known beauty from Srirangamwas the latter-day star, legendary comedienne, T. A. Mathuram, wife of N. S. Krishnan! In the credit titles of ‘Ratnavali’, hername appears as ‘ T. R. A. Mathuram’.

(R. Prakash, one of the pioneers of Indian Cinema and a sadlyneglected figure today, seemed to have possessed an ESP(extra sensory perception) of noticing the mighty oak in thetiny acorn. He was directing a film during the 1950s, a few yearsbefore his demise, when a slim lovely girl from Tirunelvelidistrict, totally unknown, brought to play a bit role, attractedhis discerning farseeing eye. He told his crew that the girl wouldmake it to the top. She was the latter-day Indian movie star,Waheeda Rehman!)

With the director taking the train back to Madras, Meiyappanhad to think fast and overnight a popular Bengali film directorwho had made silent and talking pictures in Hindi and Tamil,Profulla Ghosh was engaged to take over and direct the film. Ashe did not know Tamil, Krishnaswamy had to translate everyword written or spoken in English!

While “Ratnavali” progressed without any hitch, problemsof a different kind surfaced later. When the film was edited, itwas found that the lip synchronization was faulty. In technicallingo the picture was ‘non-sync’. When artistes on screenopened their mouths no sound was heard and when sounds wereheard the artistes’ lips were sealed shut!

‘Ratnavali’ (1935) did not fare as well as expected in the boxoffice in spite of the popular star cast, pleasing music (com-posed by the legendary Papanasam Sivan) and comedy. Mov-iegoers found it annoying and irritating to watch a film in whichthe picture and sound went their separate ways!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, A stray dog in our street got injured in anaccident. It was in severe pain and was howlingall the time. It could not move much and re-mained confined to a shaded spot on the street.

Since the residents were scared to handle itand take it to a veterinarian, one of the resi-dents contacted Blue Cross.

A couple of their employees reached the spotwithin an hour and handled it carefully eventhough it resisted and took it away in theirrescue van for treatment.

I thank Blue Cross for their excellent servicein the rescue, treatment and adoption of suchaggrieved animals.

I appeal to the readers of Mambalam Timesto not ignore any animal in plight that they seeand instead contact any of the animal welfareassociations like Blue Cross or SPCA. Thecontact numbers of Blue Cross are 2230 0655and 2230 0666. – R. Bala, SubhareddyStreet, West Mambalam

Blue Cross rescues injured stray dog

Thank you Sadanand for the‘Aadhar Torture’

Sir, I am very much impressed by M. A.Sadanand’s column ‘Aadhar Torture’ publishedlast week in Mambalam Times.

He has given expression to what many of usthink but cannot communicate so clearly andcleverly.

I personally made three futile attempts toregister for this Aadhar card and flew from the“Center of excellence” fearing flu.

Among my friends, only one senior citizensucceeded in registering his biometric data. Hehad to send his wife abroad and so he hauntedthe Aadhar center day in and day out to fulfillthis Nandan Nilekani mission. Even now, ev-ery morning a large number of admirers gatherround him in the park to listen to his fulfilledAadhar mission.

The basic premise of Aadhar I reckon is tosimplify the mundane lives of the sons of thesoil, but instead it has complicated everythingwith tons of toil.

Any error can be rectified if we approach itwith an open mind. I welcome the suggestion ofSadanand. If unemployed graduates are em-ployed for this task, we are prepared to evenhost them. It is not to be mistaken as ‘gift’ butto be understood as ‘Interim Relief’ for theunemployed youth. – K. R. ChidambaraKumarasamy, 40, 53rd Street, Ashok Nagar

MLA’s response praiseworthySir, I am the Secretary of Motilal Street

Residents’ Welfare Association. A couple ofdays back, I was pleasantly surprised to re-ceive a call from the T. Nagar constituencyMLA, V. P. Kalairajan.

He informed that a woman resident of ourcolony had called him to complain thatCMWSSB officials are not clearing the blocksin the sewer lines on Motilal Street in spite ofseveral complaints by our Association.

He said that he had spoken to the concernedAE and that necessary action will be taken inthis regard. He also requested me to pass onthis information to the resident who had madethe complaint as he had lost her number.

While on my way to meet this lady to conveyKalairajan’s message, I was also pleasantlysurprised to see that SMWSSB workers hadalready started the work on clearing the blocksin the sever lines.

While it is an oft-made complaint that theelected representatives – be they MPs, MLAsor the councilors – seldom interact with thepublic and show up their faces only whenelections are held, but there are a few likeKalairajan who keep themselves in the loopwith the public.

It is up to the people to make use of suchrepresentatives to resolve civic issues.Kalairajan’s contact number is 94440 13892.

While on this, I must confess that I have nofascination for politics nor do I subscribe to anyparticular party nor do I carry anybody’s tailin expectation of anything in return. I call spadea spade and whoever does anything good for thepeople needs to be applauded. – V.S.Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Convert your daily garbage into manure

Sir, I am a regular reader of MambalamTimes. I find the information covered veryuseful.

I have been composting kitchen waste usinga “Kamba” compositor in the balcony of myflat. This helps me to convert my waste intoorganic fertilizer for my plants.

Though I had some initial difficulties in ex-ecution of the process, I have managed tosuccessfully compost without any difficulty. Iam eager to share these details with the read-ers of Mambalam Times.

The method, if employed in every household, would improve civic awareness, reduce gar-bage generation, promote a greener environ-ment and lead to a cleaner neighbourhood.

Interested persons may contact me overphone. – G. Mukundhan, 2-D, RitechoiceSurya Appartments, 18th Avenue, AshokNagar; Ph: 94448 44230
