Principal’s Message
It is hard to believe that November is already here. There have been so
many exciting things happening at Glen Park like KM Club, Cross Country,
Choir, Photo Day, Field trips, Super Ace Assemblies, Francais Alliance,
St Albans Boys and Girls club, Basketball, Ball Hockey, Girls club/Boys
club, Volleyball, Mindfulness, Chess, Lego and much more! There are
many innovative learning opportunities that await us in the coming
months as well.
We have talked about safety the past two months. We are asking that
you please adhere to the following three safety expectations:
Please help keep the parking lots safe by not parking in
designated fire routes, in front of garbage bins and/ or in
disabled parking spots. Please use the loop in the parking lot as a
“Kiss n’ Ride” and pull right around, rather than stopping. We
have been getting numerous complaints from parents and visitors
to Glen Park because of vehicles standing in the middle of the
driveway blocking others.
Thank you for dropping your child(ren) in the back pavement area
of the school so they can walk into the school independently and
with their classmates. We want to continue to foster student
independence and minimize congestion in the hallways.
Please begin your visit at the office should you wish to meet with
your child’s teacher
Adam and I continue to be impressed with the commitment from you as
parents to do whatever it takes to support our teachers. We have a
very special place here at Glen Park where we strive to be as inclusive as
possible and to provide our students with whatever tools they need to
be successful. As you know, my door along with my VP Adam Thompson’s
door, is always open and we look forward to hearing from you regarding
any issues that you would like to discuss that will support us with your
child’s learning. Jeanette Lang

Cross Country Meet
On Monday, October 17th, over 150 students
travelled to Earl Bales to represent Glen Park
and compete at the Cross Country meet. It was a
rainy, cold day! The students were tough though
and ran in less than ideal conditions.
We congratulate all the runners but special
mention goes to the following students in Grades
3-6 who placed in the top 40: Maddie, Tanya,
Jazleen, Adriana, Elizabeth and huge congrats to
Keane who was 6th out of 249! These students
attended the Cross Country semi finals on
Friday, October 21st and ran in even worse
conditions than Monday. Again, they all ran well
and we are proud of all our runners.
Unfortunately, no one advanced, but Tanya came
in 17th! So we will keep our fingers crossed for
when she is in Grade 4 and able to move on!!
A huge congratulations to all of our runners who
made us proud!!
Self Regulation and Mindfulness
As a school, we have begun to focus on the very
important life skill of self-regulation. Many of
you will know that self-regulation is a learning
skill evaluated in every Provincial report card
and can be defined as the ability to monitor,
maintain and change the level of alertness so
that it is appropriate to a situation or task.
Each of our Kindergarten classes, along with a
number of other Gr. 1-6 classes, under the
leadership of Judy Reynolds, a certified
meditation/mindfulness instructor, will
participate in a 45 minute per week session on
how to develop Self-Regulation this term.
The Earth is important to us!
November’s Eco focus will be to be mindful of
where we are putting our recycling and to
minimize the garbage we create. Carolina and her
crew at Snack Program are making an effort to
create delicious, healthy and litterless snacks:
4 out 5 days are either litterless or reduced
waste.
What are you doing to make Glen Park green?

Boys Club visit to JPCI Skateboard Park
The Glen Park Boys' Club celebrated their first
lunch hour outing to the John Polanyi CI
skateboard park on Monday, October 3rd. They
watched a performance by Mr. Elliot Allen, a
Child and Youth Worker practicum student who
has been working at Glen Park since the
beginning of the school year. The Boys' Club
mandate is to celebrate the positive, develop
social skills and build esprit de corps. All boys
are welcome to join our lunch hour meetings
which are held every Monday in Room 214.
Special thanks to Messieurs Bichay, Pascoe and
Zolas for chaperoning the excursion.
Super Spellers
Congratulations to the following students who
wrote the first Glen Park Spelling test of the
year on Monday, October 24th. We had an
amazing turn out. There were 27 primary
spellers and 12 junior spellers. In total 24
spellers correctly spelled all ten words with
many more that got 9 and 8 words correct. The
results show that they have been studying
diligently. Very encouraging indeed!
Congratulations goes out to: Ella, Gabrielle
Macari, Luqman, Chelsea, Ava, Cynthia, John,
Ruwayfi, Richard, Brianna, Izabella, Joseph,

NUMERACY WITH A SPIN!
By: Rebecca
On October 26 2016, DJ Joseph came to room
212 ready to spin up the math class. We learned
about numeracy along with Djing.
DJ Joseph taught us what BPM ( beats per
minute) was. We also learned how to use a digital
program called serato ( Mixer ). On the serato,
we learned how to mix songs. To mix songs, they
both have to have the same tempo or half of the
tempo. Each serato has 2 decks ( which is the
disk ) and 2 headphones. The limit for each
serato is 2 to 3 people.
We all got steps and instructions on how to use
the DJ equipment. First, you have to pick a song
and load. Then, you have to put the headphones
on and press play. After, you press a red button
on the serato 5 times on the beat of the music
you choose. When you press the red button, the
song will repeat over and over again on the beat.
"This was a great way to connect the real world
and numeracy!" exclaimed Mr. Rezza grade 4/5
teacher

Beats Per Minute by: Anastasia ( Recount style )
The seconds go by as we eagerly wait for the
bell to ring so we could get our DJ on! "RING"
the bell went. We quickly rushed into meet our
teacher. " Dj Joseph will be our teacher for the
afternoon," Mr Rezza quickly explained.
We all clapped as we listened to a song to find
out the beats per minute. " Math thru Music, "
he said that is what the program was called. We
all questioned how you could teach Math through
Djing. We quickly realized how Djing is
connected to math. As soon as we found the bpm
of two songs, we all slowly learned the basic
steps of ding. Once we got used to it, we
practised mixing different beats, taking into
account the bpm.
We all had a great time and most us probably
improved a lot in our mental math!
Expanded JK/SK Space
Our Kindergarten team are busy brainstorming a
plan to expand our FDK learning space to include
an outdoor learning spot for students. If you
would like to provide input or ideas into this plan,
please email [email protected]. We are
working on a multi year budget plan to make this
happen.
The Room 213/214 Halloween Bake Sale
The Grade 5/6 FI classes held a fundraising
bake sale during the recesses and lunch hours of
the last week of October. Our families took
special care to ensure that the homemade, whole
wheat muffins, banana and zucchini breads and
kale chips we prepared complied with the
Ministry nutritional guidelines. We learned that
pastry can be both delicious and nutritious! We
spent time advertising and marketing our sale.
During the last period of every school day, we
counted the bank notes and coins we had raised,
making sure to notate everything neatly in
proper columns and double checked all of our
calculations. It will cost us $771.00 to send 53
Grade 5/6 FI students and 10 adult chaperones
to The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair on
November 8th. This includes return TTC fare.
We raised $1075.05 during our bake sale. This
leaves us with $304.05 to apply toward our ROM
trip on December 5th.

Halloween
We were so thrilled with the number of students who came to school dressed in costume to celebrate
the spirit of Hallowe’en. It is the one day per year when students and staff can dress up and have fun
learning. Thank you to all parents who assisted with make up and costumes. It was certainly a fun day at
Glen Park!
