ABOUT CAMPOur camp is designed to promote a child’s lasting curiosity and excitement about nature. Our goals are to instill awareness and appreciation of the natural world, to teach responsibility for the environment, and to promote an understanding of our place in nature. Camp activities are carefully planned to meet these goals and, at the same time, create a fun and memorable experience.

OUR CAMP STAFF Our staff members are chosen for their enthusiasm, experience, knowledge, and ability to work with children in the outdoors. They are college graduates or undergraduates currently enrolled in an environmental and/or educational field of study. Prior to the start of camp, all staff members participate in a week-long training and are certified in first aid and CPR.

CAMP FAMILY HIKES Check out some of the cool places that your camper has been talking about—from the coyote den to the ‘‘painted turtle bridge’’—on Wednesday mornings from 8:00 to 8:45 am. Preregistration is not required and the hike is

open to all family members. Contact information: email [email protected], call 508-349- 2615, or visit massaudubon.org/wellfleetbaycamp.

The Ecologists program expands on existing natural history knowledge. Campers will explore both on and off the sanctuary and participate in inquiry-based activities, scientific research, and ecological management studies. All sessions include opportunities to learn practical field techniques and ecological practice, as well as outdoor skills such as kayaking or snorkeling. Each week a different activity is offered with an emphasis on proper instruction and safety.

HERPETOLOGY June 25–29Includes a trip to look for nesting terrapins and a paddleboarding tripAmphibians and reptiles (herps) occupy almost every habitat on Cape Cod, from pine woods to open ocean. Some populations, however, have been declining. Assist us in searching for and gathering data on species such as diamondback terrapins, eastern box turtles, and red-backed salamanders. We’ll also look for the elusive spadefoot toad, set snake traps, and much more!

FIELD RESEARCH FUNDAMENTALS July 2–6 Includes a boat trip to survey marine lifeThe Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary conducts many summer research projects. This week you’ll have opportunities to take part in these projects while learning basic field biology practices. You’ll take feeder surveys, radio-track box turtles, search for terrapin nesting sites, census shorebirds and marine invertebrates, trap crabs, check for amphibians under coverboards, and look for juvenile horseshoe crabs.

We’ll experiment with different baits and traps, use a large seine net to collect specimens, and compare ancient fishing nets and harpoons to technology used today. We’ll even design a fish weir and create a fish print T-shirt to take home.

GREAT WEB OF LIFE July 23–27Includes a whale watch and a paddleboarding tripHow are all things connected on Cape Cod? We’ll investigate as many habitats as possible, focusing on the animal and plants species living in them. From the brown elfin butterfly in the rare coastal heathland to the eastern box turtle in the expansive pine/oak woodlands to the numerous fish species in the vast ocean and bay, we’ll take an up-close look.

ALTERED STATES July 30–August 3Includes a snorkeling trip and a visit to Scargo Tower in DennisSnorkel to observe crabs feeding on mussel beds, kayak to investigate Nauset Marsh, and climb Scargo Tower to observe the bay as we study habitat changes across Cape Cod. Learn which plants and animals adapt easily and which may disappear. Compare biodiversity in an old field to a newly cleared one, and document changes along a remote tidal creek while wading and mucking our way from saltwater to fresh.

CAREERS IN NATURE August 6–10Includes a trip to a shellfish grant and a visit to Tern IslandExplore the many different careers in nature and meet the people who use Cape Cod’s outdoor resources to make a living. Visit a local shellfish grant and learn about how they grow young shellfish from seed. We’ll attempt a little clamming ourselves! You will also meet the team of Wellfleet Bay researchers who are helping to conserve different species of animals. Maybe you’ll find the path to your future career!

EXOTIC AQUATICS August 13–17Includes a snorkeling trip and a visit to Corn Hill Beach Introduced plants and animals threaten our native wildlife. Learn to recognize the ‘‘most wanted list’’ of aquatic invaders, from crabs to seaweeds, as we snorkel ponds, creeks, and bays to document unwanted pests above and below the water. Search for native fishes and rare insectivorous plants and develop ideas to slow the spread of the alien invaders.

CRITICAL COASTAL HABITATS August 20–24Includes a salt marsh dieback study and a paddleboarding tripWith sea level rising and storm intensity increasing, our coasts will be subjected to high erosion rates, great storm surges, and more overwash. As a result, many pristine and critical habitats are being affected. These habitats house many rare and endangered species in the state. Join our week-long investigation of these critical coastal habitats, which include sandplain grasslands, coastal heathlands, saltmarshes, barrier beaches, and tidal flats.

TURTLES OF CAPE COD August 27–31 Includes a trip out with a diamondback terrapin researcher Turtles occupy almost every habitat on Cape Cod, from pine woods to open ocean. However, the populations of certain turtle species have been declining—and some are now listed as endangered or threatened. Assist us in searching for four species of turtles, helping us to weigh and measure these animals and record their behavior to gain insight into their natural history and, ultimately, protect them.
