Seashore Ramble Use dip nets and magnifiers to search for swimming, flying, and

burrowing wildlife on the sanctuary’s beach at low tide. Our

walk to the beach will take us through five different natural

communities. We hope to see crabs, turtles, fish, and a lot

Salt Marsh Science Learn to be a scientist while exploring the salt marsh. We’ll

discover this special ecosystem through hands-on activities

Cruises and Special Events

Marine Life Cruise Cruise from Sesuit Harbor in Dennis into Cape Cod Bay

aboard the Albatross to look for marine creatures. Our

naturalists will use a plankton net, scallop drag, and fish pots

to bring up fish, crabs, shellfish, and plankton for you to see

and touch. This is a very popular family trip!

North Beach Island Adventure Join a Wellfleet Bay naturalist for a short boat trip over to

North Beach Island, a remote barrier beach in Chatham

where seals are plentiful. We’ll comb the beach and the

wrackline to see what natural treasures we discover. Be

prepared to walk up to 2 miles in soft sand.

look back at the past 60 years of research at the Sanctuary

with Science Coordinator Mark Faherty and Sanctuary

Director Bob Prescott. From birds to horseshoe crabs to

turtles, Wellfleet Bay’s research program has grown by leaps

and bounds over the past six decades.

Henry Beston and the Outermost House 2018 marks the fortieth anniversary of the loss of Henry

Beston’s famed Outermost House during the Blizzard of 1978.

Join Daniel Payne, author of the Beston biography Orion in the

Dunes, for a presentation and reading. Afterwards, Sanctuary

Director Bob Prescott will discuss the final years of the

Outermost House when it was owned by Mass Audubon and

local Beston expert Don Wilding will join in for a discussion

on Beston’s significance to the culture and history of the

Outer Cape.

Race Point Hike and Bird Hike across Hatches Harbor to Race Point in Provincetown

Birds of the Salt Marsh Salt marshes are used by a diversity of birds including

bitterns, salt marsh sparrows, and rails. Join a Wellfleet Bay

Seabirds and Seals at High Head Hike along a sand road through the dunes to the Atlantic

where we’ll search for jaegers, shearwaters, and other oce-

Kayak Trips

Birding by Kayak in Nauset Marsh In the late summer Nauset Marsh becomes a hot-spot for

viewing large numbers of migratory shorebirds and terns.

This kayak trip, led by an experienced birder, will bring you

to the best spots in the marsh for viewing shorebirds. The

small group size on this trip allows for a more personalized

birding experience.

Kayak Trip Explore the winding tidal rivers, quiet bays, and scenic

marshes of Cape Cod on a naturalist-led kayak trip.

Great Island: Paddle the Herring River basin and along the

glacial bluffs of Great Island, a 3-mile barrier beach and island

system separating Cape Cod Bay from Wellfleet Bay.

Nauset Marsh: Explore the winding, tidal creeks of Nauset

Marsh, the largest salt marsh on the Outer Cape and a great

place to view wading and shorebirds, ospreys, and large

numbers of seals.

Pleasant Bay: Cape Cod’s largest embayment, Pleasant Bay

includes shorelines in the towns of Orleans, Brewster,

Harwich, and Chatham. Along the paddle are a number of

eelgrass beds that teem with marine life. Seals, herons, egrets,

and shorebirds are also commonly seen.

Natural History Day Camps in

Wellfleet and Chatham

At Wellfleet Bay Summer Camps in South Wellfleet and

Chatham, every day is an adventure! Campers ages 4–13 have

fun and make friends as they discover Cape Cod habitats and

wildlife. Themed weekly sessions offer a blend of outdoor

exploration, hands-on activities, and games.

Camp programs run Monday through Friday. Discounts are

available for students enrolled in Cape Cod schools. Visit our

Nature Center Hours: Daily, 8:30 AM–5 PM

Trail Hours: Daily, 8 AM–8 PM

Non-member Admission:

$8/adult, $5/seniors age 65 & older, $3/child ages 2–12

Program Registration Policies:

Refunds are issued if cancellation is received at least 7 days

before the program begins. We reserve the right to make

changes to programs and to cancel programs due to low

enrollment or unfavorable weather. If we cancel, you will

receive a full refund. We do not accept registrations by fax or

e-mail.

Eastham town line. The sanctuary entrance is on the left

just after the Wellfleet Drive-in Theater.

From the North: Take Route 6 West to South Wellfleet.
