Welcome to First Worship! We extend a welcome as broad as the outstretched arms of God, who calls us to be here together to rejoice in God’s glorious presence. Welcome to children of all ages – to all the children of God, each one of us. If you are an old friend or here for the first time, we welcome you.

Our worship is an intergenerational experience and we want children to feel fully included. We remember that worship offers us all a special place to be with God. In this space we talk a little more softly and walk a little more quietly. We are listening for God.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,

For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

BULLETIN NOTES

Please Welcome Our New Members Who Joined On Easter Sunday, April 8, At The 11 am Worship Service: Kelly Stone and John Anderson, 19 Union Street, Unit 1, Natick, MA 01760 203.687.8431 (Kelly cell) John and Kelly and their son, Ashley moved to Wellesley in November of 2011 from Sheboygan, WI. Kelly grew up in Northwestern Illinois and John in Syracuse, NY. Kelly is the Director of Multifaith Programs at Wellesley College and John is at home with Ashley. They really enjoy spending time with family and care deeply for the UCC in all of its expressions. Village Church on PBS The PBS program “Religion and Ethics Newsweekly” features a story about Martin Copenhaver and Lillian Daniel and the book they wrote together, This Odd and Wondrous Calling. In the Boston area, it airs at 7 am Sunday, April 15 on WGBH 44. It can also be viewed at any time on the program’s website: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics/ This award-winning program has run for sixteen years. The host is Bob Abernethy, first cousin of Bill Abernethy, who was Senior Minister of Village Church from 1976-93. Prayer Vigil for Kathy Musser We want to hold Kathy in prayer at this time, particularly during her surgery, which is scheduled for Monday, April 16, at 11 am (note the change of time). A Prayer Vigil will be held in Burtt Chapel from 11 am until the conclusion of her surgery (approximately four hours later). You may stop by the church at any time and for any length of time during the surgery. Printed prayers, prayer shawls and cards for you to write your own prayers or best wishes for Kathy will be available. Because this is the day of the Boston Marathon, travel to the church is more complicated. You can consult http://www.wellesleypolice.com for mapping out your route: God gathers up our prayers from far and near, so wherever you are at that time, we invite your prayers for Kathy.

Sustainability and Creating a Backyard Food Garden Sunday, April 22 You can help yourself and help sustain Wellesley by having your own backyard food garden using a few square feet, a water source, and a little time. Please come to church on April 22 to learn more about this subject and receive a free evergreen seedling to plant at home. After 10 am Worship, come to Burtt Chapel and join Ursula King, Wellesley Natural Resources Commissioner, and Cynthia Curtis, Village Church Environmental Ministry member, for a discussion about important aspects of growing your own food, the food gardens being cultivated successfully by Village Church youth and the distribution of food from these youth gardens for local consumption. Learn ways to improve your family’s health, teach your children the science of soil and plants, save money on groceries, reduce your environmental impact, get outdoor exercise and enjoy better-tasting, more nutritious food. Please contact Cynthia Curtis at 781.235.2124, [email protected] or Ursula King at 781.640.7101, [email protected]. Make Your Voice Matter – to Reduce Family Homelessness Attend a free advocacy skills workshop, led by Miriam Stein, advocacy consultant, and learn successful, easy to use strategies to reduce family homelessness and advocate for other issues you care about. In a supportive atmosphere, practice key advocacy skills for communicating your views to your elected representatives in person, by phone or by letter. The workshops are sponsored by the Advocacy Network to End Family Homelessness and will be held at: Wellesley Friends Meeting, 26 Benvenue St., Wellesley on Sunday, April 29, 2-5 pm. Daughters of Abraham Are you interested in learning more about Judaism and Islam, as well as learning more about Christianity? Daughters of Abraham is a group of Jewish, Christian and Muslim women who want to deepen their knowledge of their own and one another’s faiths. By reading books that teach about the three faith traditions and learning about the practices of the respective faiths, the group hopes to increase respect for all of the Abrahamic religions. An important part of the Daughters of Abraham experience is building relationships among its members. The Wellesley Daughters of Abraham group meets on the second Tuesday of the month from 7–9 pm (usually at Cafe Mangal), September through June. If you are interested in becoming a part of the Wellesley group, please contact Julie Thistlethwaite at [email protected]. Christian Service Scholarship The Village Churchwomen offer a scholarship each year to a member of the congregation who is pursuing graduate studies in preparation for religious vocation. Anyone wishing to apply for this scholarship should do so by writing to Betty Seaborn at 4 Framar Road, Wellesley, MA 02481, or by email to [email protected] before June 1. Contributions to the Christian Service Scholarship Fund would be greatly appreciated and may be left at the church office. Please make checks payable to the Village Churchwomen.

An Open and Affirming Congregation of the UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

What’s happening in Church School today? • Kindergarten students and younger will be welcomed in their classrooms before 10 am worship begins. The Infant/

Toddler Room is located on the main floor just outside the Sanctuary to the left of the Chancel. 2 year olds through Kindergarten classrooms are located on the upper floor. Children should be picked up promptly at the conclusion of worship.

• Grades 1-8 will worship with their parents until it is time for class, as indicated in the bulletin. At that time,

Grades 1—8 will meet at the signs downstairs in Village Hall for a combined activity.

Classes for Grades 1-8 conclude at the end of worship. Students in Grades 3 and below should be met by their parents at their classrooms. The Family Room is available for parents who aren’t quite ready to leave their infants and toddlers in childcare. In this room, parents will be able to listen to the worship service while their child naps or plays. This room is located upstairs beyond the library.
