Wellesley isthe platformfrom whichto launch yourson’s life.Education is all about engaging young minds in meaningful ways. Our goal at Wellesley is to inspire the boys to be the best they canbe. We promote intellectual curiosity and creativity. As OutwardBound’s founder Kurt Hahn said, “We are all better than we know.”Wellesley engenders the spirit and confidence in boys to stepup and out of their comfort zone.

Wellesley is blessed with a unique environment and history, but our future lies in our ability to embracethe new, to encourage fresh thinking, to support the individual and to keep our minds open to newideas and opportunities. The openness, integrity and enthusiasm for learning we expect from our boys,we also demand of ourselves.

We understand boys’ needs, and our positive school culture provides the academic, physical, social, emotional and spiritual support necessary for them to achieve their personal best.

Boundless. The spirit that is free, is the spirit that grows.Leap into life with an open mind.

Learningto fly...

Our holistic philosophy supportsthe boys' full range of needs.A major part of educating forthe future requires us to equipthe boys with the attitudes, knowledge, understandingand skills they will need to belifelong learners.

Creativity, optimism, positive personal relationships, perseverance and socialresponsibility are skills andattitudes that will make thedifference in enhancingNew Zealand’s unique qualityof life as well as making usmore globally competitive.

All children are talented insome area or another, anddeveloping self-esteem in childrenis fundamental to Wellesley’sphilosophy. Children need to feelsecure, safe and supported beforethey take on learning risks. The development of ‘emotionalintelligence’ (E.Q.), including the

building of positive relationships, confidence, resilience, persistence, self-motivation,teamwork and communicationskills, is inextricably linked with‘growing’ self-belief and dignity.

The talented and dedicatedmembers of staff are passionateabout their work. They areWellesley’s most importantresource, and we ensure ongoingprofessional development ispart of the school’s culture sothat they remain fresh and intune with current ‘best practice’teaching methodologies. They are able to engage the boy’sinterest through interactive andinquiry-based learning. Thepositive relationship between thestaff and the boys is a feature ofWellesley.

Our challenge is to ensure theboys retain their motivation forasking questions and to givethem a coherent framework that

empowers them to make senseof their world and be in controlof their destiny.

Learning can be fun with asense of accomplishment andownership. Life skills, includingwork and study habits, arefostered so the students can moveonto secondary school with astrong degree of independenceand self-discipline. The focusis on personal best effort andimprovement. All children canachieve, once they ‘learn howto learn’.

We look forward to meeting youand your family and introducingyou to Wellesley.

We welcome you and your family to Wellesley Collegeand proudly share the vision of teaching and learningour school embraces.

Intellectual curiosity will enable your son to go places. That’s why our curriculum is designed to inspire. Withhighly experienced staff, including seven specialist resourceteachers, a librarian and four teacher aides, we offer a uniquerange of ongoing and in-depth learning programmes.

Intelligence is not enough. In fact, the highly acclaimedthinking skills expert DrEdward de Bono believesthat many highly intelligentpeople are often poor thinkers.

Creativity, or the ability tothink divergently, can bedeveloped and improved. It is a learnable process.

There is a strong emphasison literacy and numeracyskills, but we also ensurethe curriculum promotescreativity and thinking skillsas well as allowing forindividual learning styles.

Thinking Skills are integralto our curriculum. We striveto ensure all subjects include

higher order thinkingopportunities, includingtechniques to apply inreal-life problem-solvingsituations. Boys developthinking, problem-solvingand reflection skills ratherthan relying on rote learning.Your son won’t simply learnwhat to think: he will learnhow to think.

My teachers inspire me to think about how far I can go.
