Livery Availability at Chestnut Farm Stables

Hallaton Rd, East Norton, Leicestershire LE7 9XF We offer a wide range of livery packages to suit everyone, from DIY with/

without assistance, to full livery. The staff are very experienced and are happy to help and guide those who are new to horse owning.

Instruction is always available. Clinics are held regularly by visiting instructors in all disciplines. We have a large floodlit arena and a smaller lunge area.

When the fields are dry, liveries are able to ride the perimeter which has a few jumps also available to them. Saturday mornings and Thursday evenings are relatively busy for the riding school but use of the surfaces are well managed and always made available to our liveries. The loose boxes are large and we

are able to separate the barns and grazing if required .The walker is useful for the winter months but grazing is available year round.

WHAT IS LAMINITIS?Horses and ponies can suffer from laminitis at any point during the year, but the most common form of laminitis is nutritionally induced and usually triggered by the onset of fresh grass during the Spring and Summer months.

A horse or pony suffering from laminitis may show signs of lameness or demonstrate an unwillingness to move forward. There may be an excessive amount of heat in their hooves and an increased pulse felt at the back of the pastern in the digital arteries. A classic sign of laminitis is the animal bearing more weight in the heels of the front hooves than deemed normal and shifting their weight frequently to relieve pain or, if all four hooves are affected, they might lie down for excessive periods of time.

All of the above symptoms are caused by a failure of the laminae which attach the pedal bone of the foot to the inner hoof wall. Any damage to the sensitive laminae in the hoof will leave the pedal bone with very little support which means it can drop or rotate within the hoof wall. In serious cases, the pedal bone can penetrate the sole of the hoof.

Diet can also be managed by restricted grazing using electric fencing or a grazing muzzle. Soaked hay can also be fed as an alternative to grass. Welland Valley Feeds stock a range of Rutland Electric Fencing products.

Welland Valley Feeds have a wide range of products to help you manage the condition and keep your equine friend comfortable.

Blaston Show – a perfect family day outBlaston Show celebrates its 60th Anniversary this year. Taking place on Sunday 25th June in Slawston, between Market Harborough and Uppingham, it is set to be the perfect family day out, with plenty for all to enjoy.

Native breeds of cattle, such as Hereford, South Devon and Lincoln Red will be on show, together with a selection of prime stock cattle. There is also a Sheep & Lamb Show with a vast array of classes including a Fleece Competition.

Over 100 dogs take part in the Dog Show each year. Catering for Kennel Club registered and Heinz 57 breeds, both working dogs and family pets can put their best paw forward. Meanwhile, for equestrians Blaston Show offers everything from show jumping, showing and in-hand classes to the ever popular ‘Family Horse or Pony’.

For the more mechanically minded, a Classic and Vintage Car Run concludes in a grand parade in the main arena. There is always something unusual to see such as Edwardian fire engines and 1940s lorries.

The showground will be packed with over 50 trade stands and delicious food outlets, plus a bouncy castle and climbing wall to keep the children happy.

Entrance to the Show costs £15 per car and gates open at 8am. A significant proportion of money raised on the day will be given to local charities, with Leicestershire & Rutland based charity Hope Against Cancer this year’s principal beneficiary. More information can be found at www.blastonshow.co.uk.

Most outbreaks of lameness in sheep are caused by either interdigital dermatitis (scald) or footrot which are caused by the bacterium Dichelobacter nodosus.

SCALDScald can cause severe temporary lameness which interferes with grazing. Prompt treatment ensures that there is no impact on growth rate but delayed treatment can cause failure to gain weight or even weight loss.

Individual cases of scald can be treated topically using oxytetracycline aerosol sprays. When several animals are affected, treating all sheep in the group in a 10% zinc sulphate solution or 3% formalin in a footbath usually provides effective control. After footbathing, sheep must stand in a dry area so that the feet can dry. It is usually necessary to repeat the foot bathing at weekly or two weekly intervals throughout the risk period.

FOOTROTFootrot is an extremely painful disease and affected animals can lose weight rapidly. Sheep with footrot are very lame, remain recumbent for long periods and may not bear weight on the affected leg. When both forelimbs are affected, sheep walk on their knees. There is swelling and moistening of the interdigital skin and a characteristic foul-smelling discharge.

Foot-bathing is not an appropriate treatment for sheep with footrot although, if used correctly, it may limit the spread of the disease during its early stages.

The best current treatment for footrot is an injection of long acting oxytetracycline together with removal of any debris from the interdigital space and use of an antibacterial spray. Most sheep recover from lameness within a few days. Affected sheep must be isolated with other sheep undergoing similar treatment. Paring the hoof horn in cases of footrot exposing the corium delays healing and is not recommended.

BLOWFLYBlowfly is the main external parasite affecting sheep anytime between April and October but is more likely to occur in warmer, humid weather. Flies are attracted to sheep by the odours of excessive “sweating” and urine and/or faeces contamination. Fly strike can occur anywhere over the loins, shoulders, flanks, neck, back, throat, bottom or abdomen. If left untreated, fly strike can be fatal.

Indications of a fly strike include foot stamping, vigorous shaking, gnawing or rubbing of the tail and bottom. There is a distinctive smell and the wool becomes matted and discoloured.

PREVENTIONRoutine crutching and dagging will reduce the risk of strike if started in April and repeated every four to six weeks.Complete shearing can temporarily reduce the risk of strike, but this risk rapidly increases as the fleece grows. Ewes can become flyblown even after shearing.Prevention is the best form of control. Strike can be prevented using pour-ons containing the insect growth regulators CLiK® and CLiKZiN®. However these products will not treat existing strike (maggots). Crovect Pour On will prevent strike and also kill maggots.Clik Pour On -Available in 0.8L, 2.2L and 5LClikzin Pour On -Available in 2.2L and 5LCrovect Pour On -Available in 0.8L, 2.2L and 5L

ORFOrf is a painful skin disease of sheep and goats and is common throughout the UK. It can strike at any time of the year and affect sheep of any age, but is most commonly seen just after lambing. Animals with orf develop scabby lesions around the mouth and nostrils, although the infection may also affect other parts of the body, for example the inside of the mouth, the lower legs and, in particular, the teats of nursing ewes.

Battles Ovaloid Capsules and Adminstration Gun. A natural way of assisting good health in sheep recovering from orf.

Ban on hedge cutting has begun for 2017 under Cross Compliance

Cutting and trimming hedges and trees entered its closed period on the 1st March, placing a ban on hedge cutting until the 31st August. This is a Cross Compliance requirement under GAEC 7a: Boundaries and GAEC 7c: Trees.

The closed period has always applied under Cross Compliance, but this timeframe was extended by one month in 2015. The ban is in place to protect hedgerows during the bird-breeding season. The extension was brought into play to cover the main chick-rearing season, and is applicable to trees as well and hedges.

Basic Payment Scheme claimants must adhere to the requirements of the ban on all eligible land being used for agriculture, which may include woodland, or face a reduction in the BPS payment amount.

Rules on hedges apply to any hedge growing, in or adjacent to, any land forming part of the agricultural area of your holding which has either; a continuous length of at least 20 meters, is part of any such length, or is a continuous length of less than 20 metres where the hedge meets at an intersection or junction which has another hedge at each end. Additionally, gaps of 20 meters or less and any gap resulting from a breach of the Hedgerows Regulations 1997 will be treated as a part of the hedge.

Landowners or managers who require an exemption may apply to the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) for derogation under two circumstances.

Firstly, if the hedge cutting is to enhance the environment, improve public or agricultural access, or for reasons relating to livestock or crop production. The second area for which exception may be considered is to cut or trim a tree in a hedgerow during the month of August explicitly for the purpose of sowing Oil Seed Rape or temporary grassland.

The first of these circumstances also relates to the hedge overhanging a highway, road or footpath over which there is a public or private right of way. Permission to trim will be granted if the overhanging hedge causes an obstruction to vehicles, pedestrians or horse riders. Permission to cut will also be granted if the hedge is dead, damaged or insecurely rooted, if a new hedge requires trimming within the first 6 months of it being laid or if new hedging is required to be laid during this period.

Derogation to cut a tree within a hedgerow would need to be considered under GAEC 7c: Trees with respect to an issue involving the tree itself, or GAEC 7a: Boundaries if the request to cut involves a hedgerow within which the tree is part of.

If a tree within a hedgerow has been issued with a licence to be felled, permissions will also be required under the Hedgerows Regulations 1997 if it is proposed to remove part of the hedgerow as a part of the felling process.

Early application for any derogation permissions is heavily advised. If you require any support with applications for licenses to cut or fell during the banned season, or require advice on any areas of land management or the BPS, please contact [email protected].

The World of Gilbert and Sullivan Saturday 6th May 2017

at All Saints Church, Clipston. LE16 9RW‘The Wandering Minstrels,’ one of Great Britain’s leading Gilbert and

Sullivan groups, will be performing a superb light-hearted evening of songs and scenes from the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas. An

evening of Savoy favourites, combining the wit of W.S Gilbert and the enchanting music of Sir Arthur Sullivan. ‘The Wandering Minstrels’ is a

highly accomplished group of five singers and their concert pianist. Their concerts are presented in period costume and performed in traditional

style. The company has raised many thousands of pounds for numerous charities since its formation in 1992. They have performed in theatres,

churches and stately homes all around the country and have often appeared at the prestigious International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Buxton. Doors open at 6.45 pm for the reception, with a complimentary glass of bubbly, canapes donated by Emerson & Wests and nibbles donated by parishioners. The performance starts at 7.30pm with one interval when there will be a bar available to purchase drinks. Bottles of red or white

wine for the interval, @ £10 each, can be booked and paid for in advance with tickets. Tickets:- centre aisle seats @ £12.50, side aisle seats@ £10.

Tickets from Julie Connell. Cash, or Cheques made out to PCC of Clipston with an SAE. Proceeds to All Saints Church, Clipston.
