Essential Info
Climate
Located at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore’s climate is hot and humid, where the average daily temperature is around 27°C. Daytime averagesat 31°C with night-time lows of 24°C. Rainfall is fairly constant and most abundant from Novemberto January.
________
Communication
Free wireless services are easily available in Singapore with several wireless hubs built across the city. For phone calls, you can purchase stored value cards at the airport, post offices and convenience stores. If you need to make an overseas call, dial 001, 002, 008 or 019 followed by the country code, area code and telephone number. Singapore’s country code is 65.
________
Language
With its diverse culture and different races, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil are spoken here, with English as the lingua franca. It is also common to experience Singlish, a colloquial language, in informal settings. We recommend the insightful, albeit tongue-in-cheek, Coxford Singlish Dictionary to get your Singlish up to speed. Some content may not be suitable for children as it contains strong language.
________
Electricity
The voltage in Singapore is 220-240 AC, 50Hz. Power plugs are usually in a three-pin style.
________
Drinking Water
It’s clean and safe to drink Singapore’s water straight from the tap without boiling it. However, it is not uncommon that some households install a water filtration system. Mineral water is easily available from most of the restaurants, hawker stalls, supermarkets and convenience stores.
________
Currency
The local currency is the Singapore dollar. Notescome in denominations of S$2, S$5, S$10, S$20, S$50, S$100, S$500, S$1,000 and S$10,000. Coins come in denomination of 5¢, 10¢, 20¢, 50¢ and S$1. Reliable currency exchange services are available around the city centre. Should you need to withdraw cash or make transactions from ATMs, you can find them easily as they tend to be located at shopping centres and MRT stations. ATMs accept MasterCard,Visa and cards with Plus or Cirrus. Larger department stores sometimes accept foreign cash andtravellers’ cheques at lower rates than you’ll get frommoney changers.
________
6
Banks
Generally, banking hours are Monday to Friday: 10am – 3pm, and Saturday: 930am – 1pm (some banks are open until 3pm). Most banks handle travellers’ cheques and change foreign currencies. Passports are required when cashing travellers’ cheques. A nominal commission may be charged.
________
Credit / Debit Cards
In a city of great shopping and dining, you can be sure that major credit/debit cards are widely accepted by establishments in Singapore. However, it might be common for some smaller retailers to accept credit cards for minimum purchases above $20 in total value.
________
Tax and Tipping
Tipping is not a common practice in Singapore as most restaurants already levy a mandatory 10% service charge and a 7% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on customers’ bills. You will see the GST (7%) and service charge (10%) amounts broken down in major restaurants and worked into the final bill. Note that tipping in the airport is prohibited.
________
Goods and Services Tax (GST)
The current Goods and Services Tax in Singapore stands at 7%. This amount is usually reflected inthe final purchase of the goods or the cost ofthe services.
Tourists can claim the GST paid for purchases above S$100 upon departure at the airport. There are two service providers in Singapore processing GST refunds, Premier Tax Free and Global Refund. When you shop at retailers with the signs “Premier Tax Free” or “Tax Free”, remember to ask the salesperson for a Premier Refund Voucher or a Global Refund Shopping Cheque. When leaving the country, simply show your vouchers or cheques with your purchases, receipts and passport to the Customs officer at the GST Refund Inspection Counter.

Three Indeterminate Lines Austen steel, 1994
It takes exceptional ingenuity to be able to stop people in their tracks with what seems like simple scribbles
of lines at first encounter. Bernar Venet’s unrivalled understanding of abstraction and fascination with
geometry translates into the brilliance of his large-scale steel sculptures which were mainly created during
the 1980s–1990s. One of such impressive and spellbinding pieces, named Three Indeterminate Lines, 1994, is
aptly found resting on a turfed platform in the middle of a reflective water feature along the pedestrian
walkway in front Scotts Square. He is also noted for more than 25 major national and international public
sculpture commissions and in 2005, the famed French artist, photographer, sound artist, furniture designer,
film-maker and poet was awarded with the title of Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur.

Working Model of Sheep PieceCast bronze, 1971
Reposed stately along the bustling pedestrian walkway in front of Scotts Square is late British artist, Henry
Moore’s (b.1898–1986), cast bronze sculpture titled Working Model of Sheep Piece, 1971. Famed for his public
commissioned works, Moore lived frugally and donated his immense wealth accumulated from the
commissioned works to his Henry Moore Foundation to enable education and promotion of the Arts. His
signature abstract cast bronze and carved marble sculptures feature family figures, particularly the mother
and child unit, to undulating sensual forms of reclining human figures, inspired by the landscape of his
birthplace, Yorkshire, England. He won the International Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale in 1948 and
was awarded the British Order of Merit in 1963, but turned down a knighthood in 1951. The life and full pictorial
descriptions of his works are documented in Jeremy Lewison’s book titled Henry Moore.

Victoria & Albert Museum ChandelierHand-blown glass, 1999
Aligned with the trends in the contemporary arts scene, where art pieces are now beginning to emerge in
retail spaces, Scotts Square aims to be at the forefront of this trend in Singapore by displaying the much
admired Victoria & Albert Museum Chandelier by the renowned and revered American glass artist, Dale
Chihuly, at the main entrance of the retail podium. Be dazzled by the ethereal glassblowing techniques
influenced by the glassblowing tradition of Murano and explored by Chihuly since the 1970s. This suspended
glass chandelier sculpture is made up of almost 700 individual hand-blown glass forms of varying shapes,
colours and sizes. Named the first National Living Treasure in the United States in 1992, Chihuly’s glass
sculptures can be found in over 150 major museums, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Louvre, the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art and now in our very own Scotts Square.

Alice in WonderlandBronze, 1977
The mere mention of world-renowned and eccentric surrealist artist, Salvador Dali (b.1904–1989), conjures up
iconic dreamlike images of displaced objects, figures and landscapes. At just 27, Dali created one of his most
famous works, The Persistence of Memory (featuring the melting clock) in 1931. In 1982, King Juan Carlos
bestowed Dali the title, Marquis of Pubol. Throughout his life, Dali worked with a wide array of media and
processes. His genius was not only evident in his oil paintings, but it also extended to areas in film, photography
and fashion. In 1969, Dali created a series of thirteen lithographs based on the enchanting story by Lewis
Carroll’s, Alice in Wonderland. It depicted Alice with a jumping rope embarking on her magical adventures.
This evocative and mesmerising motif of a girl with a loop could also be seen in Dali’s earlier painting (1934),
Morphological Echo. Be greeted by the effervescent youth of Alice, immortalised by Dali in this bronze
sculpture, Alice in Wonderland, that awaits you at the drop-off area of the residential lobby of Scotts Square.

Baram - The WindDouble-sided metallic silver and bronze colour man-made leather, 2011
Pado - The WavesSteel in metallic gold and silver polyurethane paint, 2011
Making a spectacular entrance is literally what Korean born artist, Jinnie Seo, has done here with her two
site-specific installation works, situated at the residential lobby of Scotts Square. Baram — The Wind and
Pado — The Waves, come together to form continuous directional spatial movements guiding the visitors to
walk through the lobby as they enter from the main entrance. At the same time, each work isolates an
enclosed and yet opened space to create a personal recess or resting area. As an artist who has studied
Biology and obtained a MFA in Painting from New York University, Seo has been fascinated with lines since
her childhood. This engagement with lines to articulate a space became a dominant theme in her works. She
explains how these works are inspired by the operatic stage. “I am interested in the way people enter and
move through the public space and engage in both personal and collective activities. Like a stage set, the
public space plays a vital role in devising the sequential rhythmic movements of people accessing the space
whether they are passing through, taking a repose or carrying on social gatherings.”

SmallerCorten steel, 2010
Step onto the Club Floor on Level 8 and marvel at Zadok Ben-David’s exquisite sculpture that is made of
corten steel and hand cut with a plasma machine. Born in Yemen and raised in Israel, Ben-David graduated in
advanced sculpture from St Martin’s School of Art in London. His well-known sensibilities to details are
magnified here in Smaller which reveals the spatial relationship between two figures of differing perspective
and hierarchy, with a tongue-in-cheek humour. The silhouettes in the work depict tree branches outlined
within each body. The symbiotic relationship between the human body and trees becomes striking as one
cannot help recognizing that stark and delineated branches resembles an internal map of veins and blood
vessels. Smaller is a reflection of Mankind interfused and at one with nature. The inspiration evolved from an
early series called Innerscapes comprising flat-planed figures in various sculptural poses.
