Welcome to our fi rst issue of 2015.

With the new year in full swing, and as memories of a maddening holiday season beginning to fade; many of us have the urge to leave for distant beaches and faraway horizons, to indulge and pamper our senses at exotic health spas. I am delighted to feature four destination spas, some of which are 1000 miles from anywhere.

Rail journeys always evoke a sense of drama in us. Mention the Orient Express, and most people think of Agatha Christie and her infamous Hercule Poirot. We explore the Venice Simplon-Orient Express on a unique journey from Paris to Istanbul, which will leave you breathless and longing for a bygone era of romance and intrigue.

From the dizzying heights of the Peruvian mountains, to the colourful streets of the Colombian city of Cartagena de Indias on the Caribbean Sea, or the experience of the Chilean Pampas; we explore the magic of central South America.

Chilean wines have made a well-deserved impression on international wine connoisseurs. This fairly young producing country, exports some of the most sought-after varietals in the industry; leaving many, more mature wine-producing markets lost in the vines. We travel to Chile on a wine-appreciation tour and share some truly boutique wines with you.

Donna Karan has been the darling of fashion for many seasons. Join me as I endeavour to capture some of the essence of this timeless designer, from her elegant fashion ranges, to her bespoke homeware range.

As we experience glorious summer days in Cape Town, it is the perfect time for lengthy road trips in super cars. The Desert Villas shown here, were part of a proposal that was developed and designed for a new generation hotel and spa in southern Israel. The architects on the project were WV Architects; whose brief was to design units which would be simple and relaxing, and yet, ultra luxurious. Using natural local materials and contrasting them with fine glazing, modern furniture and state of the art fixtures, they ensured the main feature of the villas would be the spectacular desert landscape.

Weinstein-Vaadia Architects is a design-oriented Tel-Aviv firm specializing in architecture, interior design and landscape design. Founded in 1994, the practice’s portfolio includes a range of public and private projects throughout the country. Their buildings celebrate the beauty of simple and natural notions of life such as light, air, vegetation, and movement. They strive to be both precise and relaxed like nature; not by imitating it, but by exploring the interplay between these two positions.

For this stunning project in the desert, they commissioned Studio Aiko to do the 3D visualization.

Founded by Yair Alony and Meny Hilsenrad in 2005, Studio Aiko is a young & dynamic practice, which specializes in a wide variety of CG content and visual effects. They provide high-end products, aimed at excellence, while constantly renewing and refining their professional skills. They are committed to producing work of the highest quality for clients.Their architecture visualization services include exterior and interior 3D visualization of the highest realistic quality, offering their clients more than just production services. They also offer design and creative solutions throughout the entire production process.

While working and providing commercial work, Studio Aiko also focuses on their own independent goals - to produce original content and ideas. These independent projects help them to evolve in technical and artistic skills for future commercials projects.

An architect extraordinaire who has developped his brand to rank amongst the � nest in the world.

NICO VAN DER MEULEN has built a company with a repu-tation of being the GO-TO architectural practice when you want to build a unique residence that resonates with the South African Highveld. Their projects are unique and scaled to compliment the vast open spaces so characteris-tic of Eco Estates.

On this project in a residential estate South of Johannes-burg, South Africa; the client’s brief was for a spacious home that expressed its appreciation for outdoor living. An open plan and practical house that lived out onto the garden was of utmost importance to them. Consequently the design developed into a layout that encouraged such a lifestyle. With views to the garden from almost every room,

and large living areas that seamlessly flows out onto the covered patio, this home merges the thresholds between inside and outside. Gracefully positioned within a secured nature reserve that affords you the privilege of appreciating the comfort of outdoor living, this particular home was inspired by its own setting. Natural materials were carefully selected and stra-tegically placed throughout the home, serving as gentle reminders of the serene location this house finds itself in. The selection of materials assisted in ensuring the house blends in discreetly with its natural surroundings, while earthy colours unify the site with the home. Splashes of accent colour were used to liven the interior spaces, with emphasis given to textures and furnishings.

The site has a southern entry, which was favourable in that it allowed for the entire northern façade - where all the living rooms are positioned - to open up onto a private north-facing garden. The site sloping upwards towards the north also re-sulted in the garden having to be stepped and terraced with gabion walls, creating interest even in the landscaping. Having a garden that is on a different level can often pose the problem of a disconnection between the covered patio and the pool/garden area. It was of utmost importance to ensure that the house and garden still related and interacted as one space, rather than two disconnected areas. Levelling the pool area and terracing the upper parts of the garden achieved this. The best part of this design is the way the entrance entices your curiosity with long stone-cladded screen walls and once inside, the transparency and openness of this home that lies behind these solid entrance walls creates interesting con-trast.

Not many designers can add New York after their names. The doyenne of American Fashion does have this priveledge,

and she is the darling of the ramps of the world.

The undisputed queen of high fashion, left fashionistas speechless with her Fall/Winter collection for 2014/15. Typi-cally Karan Elegance with red and black anchoring the col-lection, fans were not disappointed as the flowing silhou-ettes of the collection took to the runway. Sheer fabrics billowed, and perfectly tailored jackets hugged the models as they strut down the runway and bewitched a captivated audience.Although some of Karan's collections are luxuriously opu-lent, there is a certain nomadic spirituality emanating from this designer.

From the glamorous setting of her loft-like Central Park West home, she plans and creates high fashion and bespoke home ware, and yet she is equally at peace at her island re-treat, where Karan goes to create awareness.

Her Central Park West home is a reflection of her two sides – urbanite and nomad, it is elegant and serene, and fi lled with beautiful art and bespoke objets, collected on her many travels abroad.

Donna Karan and Stephan Weiss celebrated 17 years of mar-riage by renewing their vows in a family ceremony on Parrot Cay, in the Turks and Caicos Islands. His gift to her was big love in a small box: an engagement ring. Hers to him was a wild, beautiful piece of land, next to the villa they had been renting. It was fronted by a strand of white beach that, at sunset, blushes like a bride. Weiss died of cancer six months later. “He asked me to prom-ise that I would build a house on the property for each of our three children,” Karan says. “He imagined it as a retreat where three generations could enjoy total privacy but be together. For the kids, it has become a miniresort. For me, it's a sanctuary where I go to create awareness. Three hours from New York, I have this amazing cocoon of serenity that reminds me of the two places on the planet where I feel hap-piest: Africa and Bali.”After the passing of Stephan, she started the Urban Zen Foundation in his memory, to promote the integration of Eastern healing practices with Western medicine. Three Ur-ban Zen boutiques help to fund the work by selling soulful organic clothing and home furnishings.

Karan had high expectations for her project on Parrot Cay, and she commissioned the architect, Cheong Yew Kuan, who is based in Singapore, for the compound. He was joined on the project by two young architects based in Manhattan: Enrico Bonetti, an Italian, and Dominic Kozerski, an Eng-lishman, who had met as associates in the offi ces of Peter Marino. Kozerski had supervised the design of Karan's flag-ship boutique in London, and when he and Bonetti opened a practice in Nolita, in 2000, her penthouse on Central Park and beach house in the Hamptons were among their fi rst commissions. The Parrot Cay Resort has been developed to a total of 60 rooms and suites, unbelievable beachfront villas and two island restaurants. Many have claimed the resort to be lo-cated on some of the world's prettiest white sand beaches fringing clear waters.

The Shambhala Wellness Retreat Spa provides the ultimate relaxation experience for visitors. Offering a yoga room, nine treatment rooms, an outdoors Jacuzzi garden, Pilates studio, massage rooms with Japanese baths and pavilions overlook-ing the North Caicos Channel for further contemplation. Karan has since marketed 70% of her estate to interested buy-ers, but continues to own three acres of her property, including a house, a spa and a few swimming pools.

Her passion for beauty is also reflected in the Tabletop Ware she creates in collaboration with Lenox. She describes it as “elemental” and close to who she is. The collection has a soul. An energy that will affect even those who do not understand it.Looking at her home, It is hard to imagine a more natural birthplace for the fashion designer's latest creations: glamor-ous, organically shaped dinnerware, vases, flatware, stemware and serving pieces made from porcelain, stoneware, glass, wood and metal. President of Lennox's Donna Karan division travelled to India, Thailand and Vietnam to source small workshops to create the collections, with her favourite items in the collection being the Nepalese singing bowls. Karan has an extensive collection of her own singing bowls.

It seems as though Donna Karan has the Midas touch, as her home furnishing range is all the rage with interior designers. The earthy Balinese-inspired range is a reflection of her life: unpretentious and elegant.

Whether at a red carpet event in Paris, or receiving guests bare feet in her home in Manhattan, this elegant designer has a presence many de-signers can only dream of achieving. It is therefore not surprising that New York is proud to be the NY in DKNY.

We explore the sites of Lima with a guided visit of colonial and modern Lima. Attractions include the cathedral, dating from 1654; the main square, which still houses the original bronze fountain built in 1650; and the San Francisco Convent and its catacombs.

Although it was difficult to leave the luxury of our Presidential Pool Suite, it was time to discover the rest of Peru; and after breakfast, we transfer to the airport for our flight to Cuzco - the ancient Inca capi-tal - where our private vehicle awaits us for the 90-minute drive to the Sacred Valley.

After breakfast, we transfer to the airport for our flight to Juliaca, and our onward journey to Puno - on the shores of Lake Titicaca, where we are welcomed to our exclusive lake view suite at the magnificent Titilaka Lodge.

A relaxing evening at the lodge was welcomed in prepa-ration of our next excursion the following day. We visit the islands of Uros, home of the Uro-Aymara Indians. The islands, made entirely of reeds, are inhabited by the Ay-mara Uros people, who live in huts built on platforms of reeds, not more than 30-40 cm thick. After a short hike on the islands, our boat trip continues as far as the island of Taquile. Members of this self supporting Aymara com-munity receive visitors in their colourful national cos-tume and show them around the island. Taquile is also renowned for its fine, decorative weavings.

We return to Titilaka for another night of sheer bliss to further enjoy the Chilean hospitality. After a leisurely brunch, our private transfer to the airport awaits us for our return flight to Lima.

On our last night in Peru, we decide to stay in the charm-ing Barranco district. Many artists have made Barranco their home and the area has a distinct Bohemian atmos-phere.

Our hotel for the night is a member of Relais & Châteaux, and is the first arts-boutique hotel in Peru. The stunning Hotel B with its marble, exotic woods, a beautifully col-umned façade, balconies, and sky-high ceilings lit by skylights, has a unique charm.Originally a summer pavilion, dating back to the Belle Époque era; it is tucked away in the heart of the Barranco district, a protected his-toric area next to the Pacific Ocean. Renovations were entrusted to sculptors from the School of Fine Arts and to an Italian cabinetmaker, with a view to preserving and showcasing its rich architectural herit-age. Hotel B draws its inspiration from the atmosphere of the surround-ing district and exhibits works by contemporary Peruvian artists, adding to the hotel’s character. The cuisine found at the hotel further explores this spirit of curiosity, which blends traditional Peruvian in-gredients with Mediterranean influences.Our suite for the night is supremely luxurious with every conceivable amenity at hand. This hotel is truly a boutique establishment, and one, which will fea-ture uppermost on our list of favourite places in Peru.

ChileFrom the Tierra del Fuego region in the far south, the salt desert of Atacama, to ski resorts in the Andes, Chile is a country as diverse in its offerings to rank with any other.

If you’re looking for a luxury travel destination in South America, it ’s hard to top Chile for its well-run tours, good facilities, and widespread English profi-ciency. Plus there’s great wine from various local re-gions.This South American country occupies a long sliver of land between the high Andes and the Pacific Ocean, stretching some 2,800 miles north to south, but only 265 miles across at its widest point east to west. This hasn’t stopped the country’s citizens from becoming some of the wealthiest in South America, however. Because of ample natural resources (especially cop-per) and the most transparent government in Latin America, Chile is a strong and stable economy with a well-developed infrastructure. This is a good “first stop” for travellers just starting to venture out to the region. The overall tourism facilities are good, trouble spots are rare, and tourists will avoid many of the de-lays and hurdles experienced in less developed neigh-bouring nations.

The main travel attractions here are the natural ones: the Tierra del Fuego region in the far south, the salt desert of Atacama, and ski resorts and hiking oppor-tunities in the Andes. Visitors can explore moonlike deserts in the north and ice tundra in the south. Then there is a majestic lake district and the lush wine country in the center of the country. This narrow country borders three others (Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru) and many visitors with ample time combine a visit here with one of its neighbours.

Despite the relative wealth and strong tourism history over the past decade in Chile, the country took longer to build up a stable of world-class luxury hotels than some of its neighbours in South America. The routine group adventure tours are giving way to more upscale individual leisure trips, and the number of true five-star hotels has roughly doubled in the past few years. Chile is no longer behind Argentina and Peru when it comes to either luxury hotel choices or custom tours that are above the norm. The first W Hotel in South America opened in Santiago and the capital is also home to the only Ritz-Carlton on the continent.

Many companies now offer well-run luxury tours and private itineraries in Patagonia and Atacama; while wine tours and skiing are a big draw in the central region. With Chile’s open attitude to foreign investment and free trade, plus a rising number of

high-end tourists, Tour operators are confident that luxury travel choices will keep getting better and the quality of service will keep improving in the coming years.

If it is exclusive shopping you desire, then visit the streets of Avenida Vitacura, Alonso de Cordova and Nueva Costanera, often dubbed the Rodeo Drive of Santiago with upscale Chilean and International shops like Veronica Blackburn and Hermès, among countless others.

A variety of ski resorts, offering skiing and snowboard-ing areas are located just an hour away from Santiago is, with the best slopes being at Valle Nevado, El Colo-rado or La Parva. If you’re up for a whole week of skiing then head to Portillo, one of the best resorts in Chile. If you’re a true beginner you can visit Lagunillas, the clos-est and smallest ski resort located in Cajon de Maipo. There are companies that will organize the whole trip for you, including clothing rental, if needed.

When in Santiago you have to try some classic Chilean cuisine, and a popular restaurant for Chilean favour-ites is Galindo in Bellavista, go during non-peak dining hours or you’ll likely have to wait for a table. Chile has a growing culinary scene including several Closed Door dining options, pop up dinners, or local restaurants with a set tasting menu. These are a great way to get to know local Chilean favorites and see what

new things Chilean chefs are doing with local ingredi-ents. Some of the most popular are Dugnad and Col-mado. The locations and menu are often changing so check with the host if you have specific dining needs. Other popular choices are Boragó, De Raiz, La Republi-queta, Malamaria, Motemei Cocina Tallerand Salvador Cocina y Café. Be sure to book in advance as they have limited availability and often fill up quickly. The level of English spoken can vary greatly from dinner to din-ner so be prepared for a potentially all Spanish evening but chances are good you’ll have a dinner experience you’ll not soon forget.

Located in the bohemian neighbourhood of Bellavista, El Republicano is the perfect restaurant to visit before going off for a spectacle at one of the many theatres of this area. Located in an old Chilean house, the dé-cor is inspired by the golden era of the Chilean repub-lican bourgeoisie in the 1970s; luxury and class meet simplicity and nostalgia in El Republicano. The three dining rooms as well as the bar convey this feeling of nostalgia and lost grandeur to the guests. The kitchen offers traditional Chilean food with a modern twist.

The neighbourhood of Barrio Italia has a lot to offer, but often gets overlooked for its more known neighbours of Providencia or Bellavista, and although it’s centrally located it doesn’t show up much in the guide books. It used to be a hat manufacturing neighbourhood but now furniture makers, design stores, art galleries,

restaurants, cafés and boutiques fill the empty buildings and many of the former worker homes. With tree lined, quiet streets it ’s a nice break from the traffic of Centro or Providencia.Barrio Lastarria is one of the more bohemian neighbourhoods in Santiago. This small oasis in Santiago Centro is a great place to just go for a stroll at night and pick from one of the many restaurants or cafés to eat at. During the day/evening and especially on weekends, there are street vendors selling art, used books and some random antiques. You can also head towards Bellas Artes from here where there are even more museums, restaurants, cafés and bars to choose from. It is not surprising that Museo Bellas Artes is Santiago’s flagship art museum. It features a collection of Chile’s contemporary art scene and some of the best works in the country. The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo is adja-cent to Bellas Artes and is basically an extension of the latter. When you’re done, you can check out Barrio Bellas Artes, Barrio Lastarria or Barrio Bellavista. Another great Art Museum is Museo Ralli. Although one of the smaller museums you may visit in Chile, it

Cartagena de Indias is situated besides the Caribbean Sea in the north east of Colombia. It is an important port and, when the Spaniards fi rst landed here, they named it after the town of Cartagena in Spain. Pedro de Heredia founded the city on 1 June 1533 and it went on to form an important link between Spain and South America for many years. From the middle of the 16th century, the Spaniards shipped gold and silver, mined in the hinterland from Cartagena to their homeland. Inevita-bly privateers would lie off the coast waiting to plunder the ships. In addition, the French and the English besieged the city on various occasions.

When you read its history, you get the impression that one at-tack followed another in rapid succession. Consequently, the Spaniards decided to construct an almost impenetrable for-tress. It took 200 years to complete, but these defences served Cartagena well during the numerous attacks from outside

forces. Vast walls were built to encircle the city and are still standing today. The apogee of the fortifi cations is the Cas-tillio San Felipe de Barajas - a castle with underground tun-nels through which food and amenities could be brought in. The passages had an additional function: the acoustics were such that the footsteps of approaching invaders could easily be heard.

With the arrival of the Spaniards in 1533, Cartagena soon became a prosperous city. The Catholic Church had this new world in its sights and was to arrive soon after the fi rst con-querors. This is evident in the many churches found in Carte-gena. Today, the impressive, menacing palace of the Spanish inquisition serves as a museum.

The historic centre of Cartagena, within the fortifi cation walls takes up a relatively small area of the city; which is al-most bursting at the seams, though by no means at the det-riment of the lively and colourful character of the city. The narrow streets are lined with multicoloured facades made more unique by beautifully decorated doors that lead to flower-fi lled courtyard gardens. The variety of colours is as-tonishing, as are the many small balconies. This historic gem is highly thought-of by the Italians and French who have re-stored many of the old houses into comfortable dwellings.

The prevailing silence in the old city and its parks is almost daunting. Most people don't use motorised transport, while some tourists succumb to a city tour in a horse-drawn car-riage. Scaled-down Taxis are the norm here and produce very little noise. A unique feature of the streets in the old town, are the hand-carts where women in colourful dress, sell fresh fruit and a wide variety of bread and other groceries, and mobile phones can be rented for individual calls. Small taverns and local restaurants are a typically Colombian feature of the narrow streets and picturesque squares, and has effortlessly retained the unique character.

Many of the major huge religious buildings are still being used as such, though two convents have been converted into luxury hotels. Many are inward facing, ominously sized building volumes where religious life was conducted beyond huge gates. The Carmelite convent was the � rst in the city and was built at the start of the 17th century. The Poor Clares’ (Santa Clara) convent soon followed in 1621 and today houses the renowned Santa Clara Hotel.

The dramatic backdrop of the Andes sets the stage for our sojourn in the wine region of Chile; we are met by our chauffeur and driven to the charming Providencia neigh-bourhood of Santiago. This would prove to be an ideal base for exploring the wine country for the next few days, and to sample the great food and visit the wine hotspots of this unusual city.Wine lovers will find Chile refreshing and enchanting, as the varied range of microclimates, landscapes and grape varietals has secured Chilean wines a well-deserved place in the world of wine. With a geography that is unique on the planet, a coastline three times the length of Califor-nia, an ice tundra and moonscape deserts.

After settling in to our boutique hotel, Le Reve - complete with country French décor and a delightful courtyard. In the afternoon we explore the surrounding barrio (district) and discover the delightful LE FLAUBERT, an authentic French corner in the heart of Providencia since 1995. On the menu are dishes such as paté maison, a “soupe à l’oignon”, coq au vin, and duck - as served in France, Flaubert sea bass, crêpes suzettes, chocolate mousse and many more traditional French favourites.We opt to spend the evening relaxing in our hotel, in preperation for the exciting days ahead.

Our second day starts with a private walking tour of San-tiago. Visiting interesting locations, such as the Mercado central and the quaint cobble stoned Lastarria barrio; here we learn about some of Chile’s most famous citizens; from the founder of modern Chile, Bernardo O´Higgins, to modern poet Pablo Neruda, and acclaimed author Isa-bel Allende.

A private, seated Chilean Wine Tasting follows at Más Chic - the latest wine bar in the artsy Lastarria quarter - and our expert sommelier introduces us to 8 wines of Chile’s main wine regions.In the evening we are welcomed to the highly acclaimed and swanky Astrid & Gaston - known for their refined and inspired Peruvian cuisine - for an elegant dinner.

After a leisurely breakfast our introduction to the wine re-gion is the Maipo Valley, which extends from east to west around Santiago. To the south, lies the lauded boutique wine estate of Antiyal, where Chile’s acclaimed winemaker Álvaro Espinoza is at the helm. We sample their three es-tate wines – Antiyal, Kuyen and Carmenère (the 2008 has 93 Parker points), all of the wines are certified organic and they employ a biodynamic viticulture.

Our highlight of the afternoon is a charming lunch at Corc-oran Gallery. Located in the “Alto Maipo”. One of the tiniest wine estates in Chile, it is known for its micro organic vine-

yard of old vines - framed by beautiful roses. Here they pro-duce some of the best red wines in the country. We are de-lighted by the charming hosts who treat us to an al fresco lunch of succulent steak, served with their famed Cabernet Sauvignon. The evening in Santiago is even more pleasant as we dine at one of the fine restaurants the city is known for; the famed Miguel Torres Vino and Tapas bar - this Catalan wine giant also has an estate in Chile.

The dawn of another beautiful day takes us to Chile’s most famous “cool climate” wine region, and a visit to the

beautiful Casablanca Valley region, with its lush vineyards and unspoiled scenery. It is located west of Santiago towards the Pacific Ocean, where the coastal breezes create the cooler climate. The area is known primarily for its crisp Sauvignon Blanc and excellent Pinot Noir wines.The American owned Kingston Family Vineyards - widely considered to be the best in the valley - are located only 19km from the coast. They use only 10% of their best grapes for their production, and the rest is sold to surrounding wineries. A relaxed visit whilst tasting their stunning Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc, is definitely a rare treat. Another estate in the Casablanca Valley that is forging an exclusive reputation is Loma Larga (which translates as ‘long hill’). The red grapes (which are unusual for Casa-blanca Valley make up half the vineyard area) are Caber-net Franc, Malbec, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Merlot and a little bit of Cabernet Sauvignon. Loma Larga was the first estate in the valley to plant Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Malbec. The whites are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewur-ztraminer. Quite a few of the grapes are sold, and in terms

of actual production, this is the only winery in Casablanca making more red wine than white.The Diaz family is green-minded, and wants to preserve the fauna and flora on their estate: they’ve achieved ‘Lotus’ certification for good environ-mental practice. The artsy town of Valparaiso is our next stop, and we take lunch at the Oda Pacifico to enjoy outstanding sea-food and dramatic sea views.

Superb accommodation for the next few evenings Is at the Casona, at Ma-tetic vineyards in the San Antonio Val-ley, about 45 km from Valparaiso. The property houses a spectacular winery, luxurious rooms and gourmet restau-rant, run by Chef Matías Bustos. Dinner is indeed a gastronomic alfresco affair, worthy of a return visit.We have a good start to the day, as we visit the onsite winery Matetic, with sweeping views of organic vineyards from inside the impressive state of the art wine cellar. On offer is their best wine in the Equilibrio ultra premium line; which includes their deli-cious Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc Coastal.

Venturing south out of the San Antonio Valley, and on to Colchagua we discover the next gem in this wine region. This is one of Chile’s most important wine regions for sublime reds. First stop is at the revered Viu Manent which was founded by Catalan immigrants in the 1930´s. Originally wine bottlers and merchants in Santiago, they launched their own winery in the 60´s. Situated on a beautiful estate with working winery and man-or, it is now one of the leading wine estates in Chile.

Our morning is spent in the company of one of Chile’s cu-linary experts - Pilar Rodriguez - at her culinary studio on the estate, here we are treated to a private cooking dem-onstration, followed by lunch and a visit to the wine cel-lars in the afternoon. Casa Lapostolle welcomes us to the mythical Clos Apalta estate. French-owned and descendents of the Marnier family who also own the Chateau de Sancerre in the Loire Valley. This estate features a cult winery, a luxury hotel with 4 suites - one of only a handful of Relais & Châteaux properties in South America - and a stunning pool with dramatic vistas of the vineyards below. Their motto is in-deed “French in essence, Chilean by birth”, and, they have perfected a combination of the best of Chilean hospital-ity with French flair. Nestled in a majestic landscape amid lush flora, this luxury hotel ticks all the correct boxes. We are dazzled by the gourmet dinner at Clos Apalta, and en-joy their iconic wine - which is considered by many to be the premier wine of Chile.

The cult Polkura wine estate is our winery of choice on our next stop. Sven Bruchfeld and Gonzalo Muñoz founded the estate, and their life ambition is to make the best syrah on the planet. This fairly young winery pro-duced their first vintage in 2004, and they have gone from success to success. Apart from Syrah they also produce excellent examples of Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc.

After a leisurely breakfast on our last day in the region, we visit in the Millahue Valley; where something truly special awaits us. Considered a best kept secret amongst Chilean wine Conoscenti, the Viña VIK project is nothing short of extraordinary. Founded by Norwegian entrepreneur Alexander VI; no expense

has been spared in creating a holistic approach to winemaking, considering economic, social and cultural components. The farewell lunch is at the extraordinary Altair wine es-tate, with jaw dropping views over the valley. This “Grand Cru winery” was originally a joint partnership between the Bordelais Château Dassault and the Viña San Pedro wine estate in Chile, but it is now exclusively Chilean owned. The name refers to a star in the Aquila constel-lation that shines more than ten times brighter than the sun. Altair aspires to make the finest wine in Chile, and in tasting their unique wines, we realized why they de-serve the 94 points earned in Wine Advocate.

After lunch and a full tour and tasting of their exception-al wines, it is time to return to Santiago and Hotel Le Reve for our second stay. This exceptional establishment is not only the best way to start a tour of the Chilean wine re-gions, but also the perfect ending to glorious days spent in a boutique wine country not many have had the privi-lege to visit.

The connection between Formula 1 and road cars at McLaren is a natural process of experience, knowledge, principles and process transfer. McLaren’s famous win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995 was unprecedented: not only was the McLaren F1 GTR es-sentially a road car competing against purpose-built pro-totype racers, it was also the first entry by McLaren in one of the toughest endurance races in the world. Against all odds, McLaren took the chequered flag, finishing 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 13th. They remain the only manufacturer to win the race at the first attempt.

2015 marks the 20th anniversary of this historic victory, and to celebrate the win McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has announced a new, limited edition model, the McLaren 650S Le Mans. Only 50 examples of this special

car will be built, and all will be coupés. The new car is unmistakably inspired by the famous No.59 F1 GTR that won in 1995 – one of the ‘crown jewels’ in their heritage collection, and on permanent display at the McLaren Technology Centre. The new 650S will be fin-ished in a metallic Sarthe Grey exterior paint colour, and will feature unique ‘Le Mans Edition’ lightweight wheels.

Functional enhancements include a roof-mounted engine induction ‘snorkel’ and subtle louvers on the front wings, both iconic details found on the original F1 GTR. The new car also features a carbon fibre front splitter, rear bumper and Airbrake, plus MSO-developed, extended side blades and rear diffuser. Inside, the 650S Le Mans is finished in leather and Alcantara, and features race inspired seats with Le Mans logos stitched into the headrests.

The new car has been developed by MSO in consultation with none other than Peter Stevens, the celebrated Brit-ish designer who styled the original McLaren F1. Stevens describes the result as ‘a fantastic homage’ to the 1995 Le Mans winning car.Power and torque figures for the McLaren 650S Le Mans remain unchanged from the standard production mod-el, producing 650PS (641 bhp) and 678 Nm (500 lb ft) of torque. This sprint from zero to 62 mph is achieved in

three seconds and the top speed is 207 mph. With a mix of subtle design traits, the 650S Le Mans adds a modern twist by blending the iconic lines of the McLaren F1, and heritage features such as the wing louvers and the roof-mounted air intake, with groundbreaking technolo-gies. It is a fantastic homage to that original design, and to the incredible race result achieved by the team in 1995 at one of the most difficult, and most challenging races in the world.

Commenting on the McLaren 650S Le Mans, Stevens ex-plains: “The design of the McLaren F1 rewrote the rulebook. It was intended to offer the ultimate, no compromise road driving

experience. The fact that it was transformed into a racer, and a race winner, was true testament to the strength and integrity of the original design, which is something I am very proud of.”

The McLaren 650S Le Mans is available globally, priced at £244,500, and deliveries will commence in mid-2015.
