We have designed our own unique integrated
curriculum to provide Year 7 students with high quality
research based projects which progress at a pace
relevant to their interests and learning needs.
At the heart of each assignment will be the foundations of
philosophy and enquiry. The curriculum is designed to
ensure that our students are ready for the demands of
secondary education, by igniting a passion for learning
from the moment they join us.
• Extended contact, mainly with one teacher.
• Builds detailed knowledge of each student’s progress and learning
development, particularly for key literacy and numeracy skills.
• Facilitates regular, meaningful and personalised feedback, with
any need for intervention quickly identified.
• As well as the Tutor, the Excellence Curriculum teacher becomes a
familiar person for contact and support.
The Year 7 Excellence Curriculum is delivered over 18 periods per
fortnight and includes all of the content from Humanities subjects:
Citizenship, Geography, History, PSHEE, Religious Education
(and will also cover some elements of English and Mathematics)
Our prime focus is to guide students in learning, practising and
developing the key skills necessary to become confident and resilient
learners.
Who do you think you are? (Autumn Term 1)
An introduction to History, Geography, PSHEE and Religious Education
and Citizenship. Students will dig deep into their personal and local history
(History), their local geography and consider their place in the community.
They will explore personal beliefs and those of others and develop a deeper
knowledge of the wider community (PSHEE). Students will develop skills in
reading maps, using evidence and making interpretations about the local
area (Geography). They will develop their understanding of chronology and
landscape, as well as the main world religions (RE).
Whose earth is it anyway? (Autumn Term 2)A term to explore power, democracy and human rights. Students will be
asked to consider the question: ‘Who is in charge?’ They will focus on school
leadership and how this represents the wider society, developing their
understanding of election, gender and equality, power and bullying (PSHEE
and Citizenship). Students will discover the history of empire building,
looking in detail at The Romans and life under their rule (History). They will
be asked: ‘What if the Romans hadn’t left Britain?’ Students will consider the
world when nature takes over and who is responsible for natural disasters,
the role of aid and charity and an eco-friendly world (Geography).
Movers and Shakers (Spring Term 1)A study of influential figures in literature, politics, history, religion and the
world. Students will explore the meaning of influence and carry out close
study of the lives and influences of people such as William the Conqueror,
Elizabeth I, Jesus, Muhammad the Prophet and Nelson Mandela. They will
study varying interpretations and use skills in enquiry, examination and
exploration, making links between their evidence. Students will consider
influence and choice and present their work through using video making
software in an ‘Influential Figures X-Factor’.
Journeys (Spring Term 2)An examination of Journeys in many walks of life. Students will be taken on
a journey through The Middle Ages, exploring life, religion and medicine
during those times (History and RE). They will embark on a personal
journey, identifying how their bodies, lives and experiences are changing
(PSHEE and Citizenship). They will also study transport through the ages
and into the modern day, looking at issues such as congestion and
sustainability (Geography). Students will develop skills in measuring
distance, managing, analysing, presenting and using data.
What on Earth (Summer Term 1)
Students will look at the history and geography of sport, identifying its origins.
Students will look into the business of sporting tournaments and bidding for
sponsorship and looking at sustainability (Geography). Furthermore,
students will look at the themes of equality in sports and look at link between
population, financial security and infrastructure and sporting success.
Students will begin to look at careers and financial capability (PSHEE) and
traditions around the world (Citizenship).
Transformations (Summer Term 2)A study of the changing world. Students will explore settlements, land use
and landforms, looking closely at rivers and how they affect land use
(Geography). Students will carry out a Settlement project, selecting a
location and designing a new town or school. They will carry out a study of
castles, designing a castle of the future for their new town (History).
Students will also consider issues of litter and recycling (PSHEE).
