In the early spring term PHSEE lessons, Year 12 students were involved in a pilot scheme for a Drugs Programme prepared by The Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation. The views of our students have been represented and will shape the future programme. The charity provides information and support for parents as well as students. Having listened to Daniel’s mother and father speak in assembly, students went on to raise money for the charity. Advice for students and parents can be found on the website.

College VI by the Students

The Executive Committee is coming to the end

of their work on a film entitled

“College VI by the students”. This

video is designed to serve as an

information film for prospective

College VI students.

It has been a really busy term for

sixth form students with loads of

opportunities and events going on.

The Executive Committee has been

proactive in organising events and it

has been great to see all of the

different societies flourishing into

rewarding and successful assets of

the College. Kofi and I have also been

attending fortnightly meetings with

the Head Boys and Head Girls from

each college to compare and discuss

ideas. This has been a great

opportunity to see and appreciate

what's going on in other colleges.

The Executive Committee were very

excited to announce the first ever

winners of the Student Awards on

the last Wednesday of term. There

are so many hard working and

talented people in the sixth form and

as a student body we have decided to

recognise that by nominating

students who we think should get an

award. Hopefully all the hard work

and effort that characterizes College

VI will continue next term to pave

way for more successes in sixth

form.”

Stephanie Wright Head Girl

What I've found especially refreshing

is to see how willing College VI

students are to get involved with the

community and opportunities here.

We've had amazing successes with

fundraising and other events and it's

wonderful to see students going past

the curriculum. It really does

epitomize the special type of sixth

form we have.

College VI students have had access to

advice and guidance from

representatives of the Croydon Drop In

team who have been in the Common

Room.

In addition, as part of our Care and

Guidance programme, all Year 12

students travelled to the Fairfield Halls

on Friday 4th March for the Croydon

Council: Safe, Drive, Stay, Alive, Young

Driver Programme.

The College VI Students’ Student

Awards go to:

Harry Stawman

Mia Outtridge

Liam Macdonald

Bo-Li Chung

Well done!

Jack Petchey Award

Winner

Joe Handyside, organised

a trip to Clapham Picture

House on 18th March to

take part in a British Sign

Language event,

‘Power in our Hands’.

We were shown archive

footage of the London

deaf community from the

turn of the century to the

present day and we learnt

about the BSA’s fight for

equality and the ongoing

campaign to ensure British

Sign Language is

recognised as a formal

language.

Joe has a place to study

Speech and Language

Therapy at university. He

won the Jack Petchey

Award for his dedication to

young EAL students and

his work with Jean Swain

in the MacKay College.

Sport Relief

The STEM Society has been working towards the “Silver Eco schools award”,

and this term, our members have focused on the gardening club, the food

sold in the canteen and recycling.

Due to their efforts, healthy smoothies have been introduced into the

canteen.

College VI students are in conversation with the Recycling Officer for

Croydon with a view to running a scheme in College VI and then the wider

Collegiate. All this work will be submitted as part of the STEM Eco Schools

Silver Award.

Our generous College VI students

continue to raise money for charity.

For Sport Relief, the intrepid BTEC PE

students have been raising money

for sports’ wheelchairs by asking

staff and students to guess the

number of sweets in a jar and the

Fundraising Society

sold Krispy Kreme

doughnuts and Millie’s

Cookies along with

organising a raffle for a

giant cookie.

Incidentally, this was

won by our Head Girl,

Stephanie Wright, who

swears the draw was not rigged.

Fundraisers are yet to add up the

total but at the last count it was

looking healthy even if the goods

sold were not!

The College VI Dementia Society

The STEM Society

The College VI Dementia Society continues to meet regularly and groups of

students visit a local care home on a regular basis to socialise with residents.

Members have delivered assemblies to raise awareness of Dementia amongst

younger students. On Monday 21st March students got together with

ex-head of Aquila College, Mr Peter Edwards, who first introduced us to

Dementia Friends.

We learned how singing helps people to communicate with Dementia

patients and we had a go at singing some songs with actions! We will

definitely be putting this in to practice when we next visit the care home.

Mia Outtridge

The British Egyptian Society

A group of students

accompanied me to The British

Egyptian Society literary evening

on Monday 14th March at the

Army and Navy Club, Pall Mall.

Speakers included Professor

Doris Abou-Seif Behrens, retired

Nasser D Khalili Chair of Islamic

Art and Archaeology at SOAS;

Dr Gerhard Behrens, retired

international banker, academic

and novelist and The Countess

of Carnarvon, the wife of the 8th

Earl.

It was the 5th Earl who, along

with Howard Carter, discovered

the Tutankhamun tomb. She

spoke about Highclere Castle

and its remarkable

Tutankhamun exhibition and

about Highclere as the location

of “Downton Abbey”.

We were also treated to a

recital by Emmanuel Sowicz

Garcia who is a very talented

guitarist and came to the Royal

College of Music from Chile.

Holocaust Memorial

The Sports Society

The Sports Society organised the annual Snooker and Inter Collegiate football tournaments. Mr Bocking was awarded

man of the Football tournament for his heroic goalkeeping, especially when it came to the penalty shootout.

The final was held on 17th March and the winning team was VI AGW. Mr Wallett, oversees the Sports Society, the

society is open to all College VI students, it s never to late to join!

Breaking News Congratulations to Joshua Baines who has just

been offered an apprenticeship with Google.

Josh had to compete against 1,000 other

applicants for 1 of 14 places. This is a fantastic

achievement!

Lysistrata

On 25th January, Classics, Latin and Drama students travelled to Warwick

University to see a production of Aristophanes’ ‘Lysistrata’ and attend a series

of related lectures.

The excellent production was directed by a former College VI student, Emma

Johnson and starred another ex-Riddlesdown student, Maheen Rizvi. It was a

thoroughly enjoyable day. Year 12 Latinists and Ms Sowden attended a series

of really helpful lectures on the AS Level set texts at Francis Holland School.

As part of the Holocaust Memorial Day event Stephanie Wright VI/CCS, Catherine Brown VI/TMM, Joshua French VI/SJB and

Elliott Clark VI/NEP attended a ceremony in order to commemorate at the City Hall.

The theme of the day was "Don't Stand By" and we were reminded that our silence in the

face of oppression of others is a crime in itself. We heard from Hannah Lewis, a Holocaust

survivor and from Jean Baptiste Kayigamba, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide as well as

a reading from Boris Johnson.

The event was very touching and it inspired us to pass on the message to our peers and to

appreciate our ability to make a change. The photo on the right features Jennette Arnold

OBE AM, Chair of the London Assembly, Rabbi Raphy Garson who sang a beautiful prayer

song and his wife as well as the students.
