Hello and welcome to Orlando,
Becky and I are really excited to have the barbershop harmony family here in our backyard this week. While we are hoping for and cautiously optimistic about our
famously pleasant Florida winter weather, the elements won’t affect us much once we are all snuggled up here in the Rosen. What a great facility for our Midwinter Convention!
If you have been with us at Midwinter for a few years, this convention will knock your socks off. Our seniors quartets just keep getting better every year and this year is likely to be the best and one of the biggest youth chorus festivals in history.
Of course the part that remains the same over the years is the relaxed atmosphere. If you enjoy outstanding performances, rubbing elbows with other barbershop fans and singing with new friends, Midwinter Convention is a terrific place to be.
And speaking of singing with new friends, I hope you will join me in taking every opportunity to put four parts together and ring some chords. I think that is a big part of what makes this such an incredible art form. Midwinter is the best place to see the best and brightest of our future, and I don’t mean just during the youth festival. Relish in the number of young people, and not just the guys, singing in the lobbies and halls of the Rosen Hotel and Convention Center. If you make up your mind to do it, you might just be able to sing a song or a tag in a quartet that spans three or more generations.
Of course, there are lots of things to do in Orlando and I hope you will be able to take full advantage of the many entertainment opportunities here, but I can’t think of anything I would rather do this weekend than sing with my friends. So, let’s make barbershop a verb and turn this art form into a participation sport. Relax, enjoy, and … ‘shop til you drop!
Welcome to the2013 Midwinter Convention

Welcome to the 73rd Midwinter convention, the 6th Annual Inter-national Youth Barbershop Cho-rus Festival and the kick-off to our 75th Anniversary. According to the history books, this event has really changed over the years. In 1940, it started out as an administrative
meeting in St. Louis. Our Seniors Quartet Com-petition was added in 1986 (Tucson) and the Youth Chorus Festival in 2008 (San Antonio). In 1971, at-tendees enjoyed the convention while cruising their way to the Bahamas (why didn’t this continue?) and in 1989, they were doing the harmony hula in Ho-nolulu. I’m told the culture and environment of today’s Midwinter is similar to the early years of our International convention, where the schedule wasn’t so jam packed and offered many opportu-nities to sing and have fun with our Barbershop family. This is my first Midwinter and I can’t wait to take it all in!
We’d like to thank Harmony Foundation for their sponsorship of our 6th Annual Youth Chorus Fes-tival. Including this year’s chorus participants, HFI has helped fund 80 choruses and over 2200 singers and music educators. The Youth Chorus Festival, along with the 70+ annual youth workshops and camps, are the best educational music programs available for young men in the world.
The Society would like to thank the Sunshine Dis-trict volunteers for their thousands of hours of preparation and smooth execution of this conven-tion. Let’s give those “mouse guys” a run for their money. Have a wonderful time at the convention while enjoying all Orlando has to offer. They say around here that “It’s a Small World.” Let’s show them how to “Keep the Whole World Singing!”
Come up and say hello...I’d like to get to know you. Cheers!

Throughout the Society, SAI, Harmony Inc., and the Contemporary a Cappella Association, Keith Hopkins is unquestionably one of the most popular emcees in the business. A Society member since 1977, he has provided the ever-jovial voice of reason at uncountable shows and conventions.
He was a full-time Dapper Dan at Walt Disney World, and still sings there occasionally. He also sang in with the Shenanigans, The Internationally
Renowned Fabulous Mavericks, and TV’s Amazing Four Man Vocal Band.
Outside the Society, Keith directed The Vocal Gentry, a Grammy-winning mixed amateur a cappella ensemble which sang in many different styles and venues, and performed for four U.S. Presidents.
Emcee Keith Hopkins
Dr. Scott W. Dorsey is the Director of Education & Communication for the American Choral Directors Association in Oklahoma City. A tenured full professor of choral music prior to joining the ACDA National Staff, Scott has led choral programs at Montana State University-Billings, Mount Union College, the University of Northern Iowa, Vennard College, and William Penn College. Choral ensembles under his direction have been honored with invitations to appear before the American Theatre Festival, the Congress of
the United States, the College Music Society and before the global conference of the United Methodist Church in Cleveland’s famed Severance Hall.
Nationally, he has served ACDA continually since 1992 as the bibliographer of the Choral Journal, and he served on ACDA’s Youth and Student Activities Committee for thirteen years, with almost half of those years spent as the committee’s National Chair.
Scott holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Iowa, the Master of Arts degree in Choral Conducting from California State University, and the Bachelor of Arts degree in Voice from Nebraska Wesleyan University.

2012 5th Place Bronze MedalistMike McGee, BaritoneMyron Whittlesey, BassTony DeRosa, LeadRoger Ross, Tenor
Main Street members have spent a combined 100+ years singing with past quartets such as Keepsake, Max Q, Metropolis, Platinum and Rounders. While their in-volvement in the Society is impressive, all four members have been or currently are Dapper Dans at Walt Disney World and/or have sung with the Voices of Liberty, and have performed in film, television, radio and musical theater.
Rusty Pipes2012 Seniors ChampionDale Fetick, TenorCarl Taylor, LeadJay Hawkins, BassTom Rouse, Baritone
Rusty pipes? Not! They clearly proved they’re just kidding about the name when they won the gold in Tucson in 2012. They had just formed in 2011, but three of the guys were no strangers to gold. Jay and Dale both won gold with Marquis in 1995 and Carl won seniors gold with The Barons in 2003.
Masterpiece2012 4th Place Bronze MedalistAlan Gordon, BaritoneBrett Littlefield, BassPatric Haedtler, LeadRob Menaker, Tenor
Masterpiece is defined as a supreme artistic achievement. In vocal music, it is the marriage of multiple efforts to seamlessly become one. Hailing from the 8-time world champion chorus Masters of Harmony, all four of these guys have enjoyed success in various groups and have finally come together to share a unique sound and experience with their audience.

In their own words, these guys were still wondering a week after their collegiate win in 2012 “whether it all was real or not!” In Portland the same week, they also managed to place 19th in what they call the “big boy contest”, and received the Dealer’s Choice Award as the highest scoring rookie quartet in the competition. They also captured a 4th place bronze medal with the 4th place chorus from Sweden, Zero8!

A Mighty Wind is committed to taking a truly American, turn-of-the-century musical art form, and entertaining their audiences with a mighty sound and whimsical flair! Their music is selected strictly with entertainment value in mind and it is their hope that after seeing one of their performances you will understand and can relate to this spirit. To create the sounds of A Mighty Wind, these four bring together a vast amount of past quartet experience.

International Convention 2013 will definitely be a “bright lights - big city” deal! If you’re going to miss a convention, don’t let it be this one! Not only is Toronto a world-class city, but also this will be our 75th Anniversary, and Toronto is going to help us celebrate it in style! We’ll have historic displays of past costumes, trophies and memorabilia from our previous 74 conventions, and districts will have historic displays as well. The Swedish quartets Ringmasters and Lemon Squeezy will be coming back for their swan song performances, and we’ll have the thrill of Ambassadors of Harmony once again as well!
