Jesus is head of his church and he calls us to follow him. Church is a collection of people and not a building or set of activities. When we gather to worship Jesus, we call it church. When we are following Jesus in everyday life, we call it discipleship. Sometimes we are really involved, and we need a break from the constant demands, but it isn’t really Jesus we are running from. It is the stress of activity and constant demands. It is like some moms or dads need a break from the two-year-old they have been taking care of all week. It doesn’t mean they don’t want to be parents or don’t love their child, but the demands are unending. When it gets really bad, we run away from God. We think that will get us out of all the rules and expectations. We could forget ourselves and not be responsible for anyone or anything including ourselves, but it doesn’t really happen. It isn’t God that makes the bad situation. When we want to blame someone, he is an easy target. We will show him by not believing in him or doing things harmful to ourselves. That doesn’t really mean we get away with anything. God doesn’t make consequences; they just naturally occur from the choices we make. If we do well things go well. If we do horrible actions or attitude it will have an affect on what happens in our relationships. We want to claim it isn’t fair but the problem is, it is absolutely fair. The only one who gives us a break from the consequences of what we have done is God. Because of the sacrifice of Jesus, when we are horrible people, we can find forgiveness and grace with God. It is easier to find grace with God than it is with other or even ourselves. God is ready and wanting us to do well. We think we can run away, and God lets us run sometimes. Until we realize our efforts are futile and we are actually running from the very person we need the most. Getting a BreakAt some point all of us feel like running away. Maybe not for the same reason but we wish we could get a break in the demands, the work and the people. Not that we don’t want any of those but sometimes it can just be too much to do. We don’t usually want to be gone forever but just for a little while would be nice. We call it vacation.

Jesus is head of his church and he calls us to follow him. Church is a collection of people and not a building or set of activities. When we gather to worship Jesus, we call it church. When it gets really bad, we run away from God. We think that will get us out of all the rules and expectations. We could forget ourselves and not be responsible for anyone or anything including ourselves, but it doesn’t really happen. It isn’t God that makes the bad situation. Widows Ministry“Pure religion...to visit the widows in their distress” James 1:27. Thirty-three widows are among the family at Mesa. They have not asked. But some felt that we should have a ministry that would directly assist and support whatever needs these widows might have. James 1:27 and I Timothy 5:3-16 are very clear that God wants us, the church, to be concerned for our widows. Reliable transportation for doctors, den-tists, etc. might be needed. Widows won’t ask for assistance with grocery shopping or heavy lifting, but that would be some much appreciated. Helping with house, vehicle and yard problems would be a real blessing, but they don’t want to bother us. Widows themselves have offered to fund gasoline and other expenses if we had a cadre of widow supporters. Mesa have 150 members that we call senior citizens (65+), should this be their responsibility or should all 500 of us at Mesa be involved? Jesus is looking for those of is who have a heart for helping widows and would be willing to begin planning and organizing a widow’s ministry. Please tell one of the el-ders, ministers or call the office if you are willing to help.

Bible ReadingHey kids--did you do your Bible reading this week. If so, be sure to stop by the kiosk in the foyer after services to pick up your prize! It is never too late to join! Our goal is to become students of God’s word and make this a habit even when we do not get an immediate reward! Registration forms are available at the Welcome Center.

Childrens Check-In System Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help with our new check-in system last Sunday! We really appreciate all the sup-port and patience our families have shown us as we go through this process and work out the kinks. If anyone is interested in be-ing trained to work Check-In’s, please see Joshua Duboise or Jonelle Rodriguez. This is a great opportunity to get to know families and create a welcoming first impression to guests! Training will be provided.

VBS Starts TomorrowAll kids from babies through those entering 6th grade are en-couraged to register for Vacation Bible School! There are reg-istration forms at the Welcome Center, you can go online at www.mesachurch.org. or just show up Monday evening and register at the door. Kids don’t forget to invite your friends to come with you.

There will be a class for teens and adults--led by Evan Todachine from the Salt River Congregation, but registration is not required!

This summer, we have a very exciting program for kids and teens! We will have a special Bible Reading Program. Our theme is BUILDING MY FAITH and you can earn amazing prizes just for opening your Bible and reading a minimum of just 10 minutes per day!

How do you participate? It’s simple! In your Bible Class on Sunday, June 2, you will receive a registration form and your first set of vouchers. Fill out the registration form and the first voucher and bring it back on Sunday, June 9, for your first prize! Just turn your vouchers in to the BUILDING MY FAITH kiosk in the foyer every week.

Every voucher has a suggested reading of the Bible to read through the week. For the kids, that’s optional, just a suggestion. For the teens, it’s required reading because it corresponds to Bible Class for the summer! Every week’s voucher requires a parent/guardian signature certifying that you completed your reading for the week.

The best part is if you can read for 7 out of the 8 weeks, you become eligible for the grand prize! What is the Grand Prize? You’ll see!

FAQs:

Q: What if I miss a Sunday or I’m out of town/vacationing, can I still redeem my voucher? A: Absolutely! As long as the voucher is signed and verified, you can still turn it in and receive your weekly prize. But don’t forget to do so, because you only have until August 5 to turn in late vouchers!

Q: What if my child can’t read yet? A: They can still earn their prizes! What a wonderful opportunity to read together as a family! Simply read to your child (or have an older sibling read aloud) and verify and sign their form!

Q: What if my question isn’t here? Who’s in charge anyway? A: This program is being run by the Family Ministry. Please contact Joshua DuBoise or Jonelle Rodriguez at the church office (480-964-1743) with questions.

Back to School Shopping TimeIt is time for our annual “Back to School” event! For the past few years, Mesa has reached out to the teachers of our area to thank them for teaching the children in our neighborhood and helping make it a better place for all of us! These bags, which have our Mesa logo printed on them, are filled with items that teachers often have to provide out of their own funds for their classrooms. Sure, they ask for these on supply lists, but the reality is they often do not have enough to supply the need for the school year. Below is a list compiled by teachers of these types of items. Any of these can be brought to the foyer between now and the end of July. Also, if you prefer that someone else shop for you, donations can be made by noting “Back to School” on your check or cash envelope.

* Glue Sticks * Hand Sanitizer (32 oz.)* Highlighters * Pencils* Whiteboard Markers and/or Erasers * Scotch tape for Dispenser* Post-It Notes * Clorox Wipes * Boxes of Tissues

We will be packing these bags and enjoying a time fellowship on Fri-day, August 2nd, at 7 pm in Room 105! We would like to invite our children in Kindergarten thru 6th Grades to come help and take a bag to their teacher! This is a great opportunity for parents and children to show appreciation to their teachers!

SympathyOur Christian love and sympathy go out to Christine Warren and all the family of her grandmother, Donna Taylor, who passed away last week. A memorail is set for Au-gust 24th @ 3:00 pm
