Dear Friends, For the past 60 years we have proudly worked towards fulfilling the vision of our founder, Dr. William Hutchinson, to improve human health through medical research. Over the past six decades, PNRI’s researchers have pioneered scientific advances that led to improvements in open heart surgery, early detection of prostate cancer, and the identification of genetic predispositions to diabetes in newborns, to name just a few. In the past year alone, our scientists have applied their expertise in a variety of areas including liver disease, personalized cancer treatments, and anti-fungal therapies. During 2016, we also saw success in helping promising companies get off to a good start though our Urban Innovation Center, as Glyostasis’ Smart Insulin technology was acquired by Eli Lilly & Co., and FenoLogica Biosciences, Inc. was founded based on discoveries in the Dudley lab. As we look to the future, we will continue to pursue new opportunities to apply our innovative approaches to address complex biological questions. We look forward to our continued success in scientific discovery for the next 60 years and beyond. Best wishes, John R. Postdoctoral fellowship for Dr. Jesse Riordan

Patients suffering from liver disease acquired an outstanding ally this year when PNRI’s Dr. Jesse Riordan received a prestigious Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health. The award enables Dr. Riordan to investigate the mechanisms of the most common form of liver disease, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. He will explore the effects of a high fat diet on mice and seek to understand why some appear to be completely protected from the disease —an unexpected result that is challenging our current understanding.

The proprietary method for Big Data analysis developed by PNRI’s Dr. David Galas continues to draw international interest and collabor-ative opportunities. In 2016, Dr. Galas joined forces with the German research company Indivumed GmbH to scrutinize their enormous collection of biological data from cancer patients. The “extremely innovative analytical platform” will reveal connections between a patient’s biology and the complexity of cancer, leading re-searchers closer to the development of effective personalized cancer treatments.

Dr. Aimée Dudley is admired for taking unconventional approaches that often lead to unexpected discoveries. Her lab has been collecting wild yeasts for studies on metabolic diseases. Regular lab yeast grows in smooth, round colonies, while many wild yeasts form intricate, complex colonies that scientists describe as “fluffy.” The “fluffy” appearance is associated with drug-resistant fungal infections and contaminated medical equipment. The Dudley team has discovered chemicals that disrupt “fluffy,” path-ogenic fungi. This research opened new avenues of inquiry into drug therapies for human fungal infec-tions, treatments for white-nose syndrome in bats, and the develop-ment of safer medical devices.
