Whenever a county/city within the Diocese of To-ledo is placed under a Level 3 Snow Emergency, during which all roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel, the Catholic Churches within that geographic region will cancel the scheduled Sat-urday Vigil, Sunday, or Holy Day Masses. Roman Catholics in that region, therefore, are dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass. If Masses are can-celled, Catholics are encouraged to participate in Ho-ly Mass via television, radio, or internet, making a spiritual Communion. When Mass is cancelled, all other diocesan, parish, or school events in that geo-graphic region are also cancelled.
The Stations of the Cross Please join us every Friday during Lent as we pray the Stations of the Cross at 7:00 pm in Church.
The Via Dolorosa, the “Way of Sorrows” or the “Way of Suffering,” is a winding path not quite a half mile long through the cobblestone streets of the walled-in Old City of Jerusalem. It is the path that Je-sus walked from His condemnation in the Pretorium at the hands of Pontius Pilate to His Crucifixion on Calvary. Along the route there are fourteen stations marking the places and events that took place on the day He would die. Today, nine of those stations are on the way to the Church of the Holy Sep-ulchre, with the remaining five stations located within the Church itself. They are a stark reminder of what Christ went through out of His love for us and his obedience to His Father. Praying the Stations is a devotional practice that early Christians engaged in as a way of commemo-rating and “remembering” the infamous events of Good Friday. Eventually portrayals of the chief scenes along the Via Dolorosa were placed on the walls of our Catholic/Christian Churches so all of the faithful would have the opportunity to actively participate in praying the “stations.” As we pray and contemplate on Christ’s suffering, we are reminded of the hate, violence, and all of the suffering that is on-going in our world today. But more importantly, we are reminded of Jesus’ ultimate victory over sin and death, recognizing that His “Way of Suffering” is our “Way of Salvation.” During the Season of Lent, praying the Stations of the Cross with a sincere and contrite heart can be a powerful tool in helping us to seek God’s forgiveness in our lives, and in helping us to extend His forgiveness to others. One of the best known prayers for The Way of the Cross is one com-posed and first published in Italian by St. Alfonsus Liguori in 1761. In this prayer, at the beginning of each station, we give thanks to God and affirm His saving action. The priest or dea-con says, “We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. And the people respond, “Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.” Peace, Deacon Gary
