Our New Normal March 20, 2020. This was the day that Governor Cuomo ordered all non-essential businesses in New York to shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. In many ways, it was a historic day that would change life forever as we knew it. Up to this point, things seemed to be going well. The economy was on an upswing. The unemployment rate was at an all time low, the stock market was hitting all time highs and in general people felt hopeful. All at once, our state, country and world entered a “new normal”. Non-essential businesses were ordered to close along with schools and churches. Travel was severely restricted. Zoom and Skype became the new way to conduct office meetings. Even AA meetings are now using social media platforms. Who would ever have imagined, a few months earlier, family get-togethers being done over the internet? Who would ever have imagined that unemployment levels would rise to an all-time high, even surpassing the Great Depression in 1929? Food pantries were overwhelmed with families seeking assistance. Social distancing and PPE’s have become a normal part of our vocabulary. Now, four months later, we see many businesses declaring bankruptcy as the pandemic will not release its grip on the country and the world. Although thankfully, the infection rates and deaths in NY have substantially come down, other parts of the country are surging with new cases while here in NY many in the health and science fields warn that an impending second round is on the way. All the while this country seems to be more divided than many of us have seen since the early 1960s. Communities, families and the country have become fractioned in many ways. It seems that battle lines have been drawn along party lines. Liberals and conservatives, democrats and republicans seem to be digging in their heels over individual freedom vs. the common good. We have seen both the best and the worst come out in people during this challenging time At this point, one must ask the question, is there a silver lining in all of this? It is apparent that there are many who at the risk of their own health have stepped forward in a most unselfish way. Our first responders, doctors, nurses, police officers, EMT’s and firefighters. What about the essential businesses that stayed open for us? Pharmacies, grocery stores and auto repair shops to name a few. Then there are those who had to work from home including teachers and office workers that kept the wheels of our society turning. And let us not forget about those that have embraced wearing uncomfortable masks because it was the right thing to do to protect others. Ultimately, the choice is ours. Like our first responders, we can choose to unselfishly help others or pretend like nothing has changed. Caring for others includes following CDC guidelines to continue to socially distance and to wear masks in public. Yes, wearing masks or changing our lifestyle may be unpleasant, however the small sacrifice that we make now in the short term will benefit others in the long term. After all, isn’t this just another opportunity to express our apprecia-tion for one another and our gratitude to God? Isn’t this the sliver lining in our “new normal”? Deacon Tom

Do you know a student who will be attending college in the Fall? As many of our teens move onto college, you can help them continue their journey of faith. Many colleges, both secular and parochial, provide a Newman Center for incoming Catholic students. These Centers provide pastoral support and ministry to students, in addition to providing a space to meet other Catholic students interested in growing in their faith. The respective Newman Connection campus lead-er will be informed and will welcome the student when he or she arrives in the fall.

Please send the student’s First & Last Name and the Name of College, the City and State, they will be attending to Patti Anderson at: [email protected].

Sharing the Gospel Your toys can break. Your books can tear. Your clothes can shrink and stain. Things don't last forever. The kingdom of heaven does last forever. It is like a treasure. Heaven is worth more than anything you own. In both stories, the person who found the treasure sold everything else just to be a part of God's kingdom.

Put God's kingdom first. Read a Bible story every morning.

Mission for the Week

Something to Draw Draw a picture of yourself finding a buried treasure.

Prayer God, help me to love Your kingdom more than the things I have.
