Brief History • Kisumu is comparatively recent in origin

having developed at the beginning of the 20th century. It is the 3rd largest city in Kenya after Nairobi and Mombasa respectively. Approximately 350,000 people live in the informal settlements (slums) where the standards of living are poor. The Luo tribe is the majority in Kisumu City. There is widespread poverty among the people and people do not earn enough to live in wellness.

The Community is gifted and varied and is

known for their hospitality and friendliness.

Kisumu informal settlements lack basic

environmental health infrastructure such as

clean and safe water, sewers, drainage,

acceptable standards of housing, and other

public health infrastructure and utilities.

These have been strongly associated with

states of ill health and higher prevalence of

diseases such as malaria and typhoid.

The community is the biggest resource that

KUAP Pandipieri has and since the

inception invested in training Community

Health Volunteers (CHV) and they are multi

skilled and work in Children’s Services,

Health & Education.

KUAP PANDIPIERI FOUNDER • In 1979 the Bishop of Kisumu asked Mill

Hill Missionaries to work in the informal settlements (slums)of Kisumu. Fr. Hans Burgman a Mill Hill Missionary from the Netherland was chosen to start this mission as a means to reach the community who were not reached by the traditional Church.

• He came to live with the people, worked with them learnt from them, respected their opinions which was the stepping stone to the development of Small Christian Communities in the informal settlements (slums).

KUAP Pandipieri continued

Fr. Hans began his ministry by gathering a team which he likened to the Early Christian Community where the team lived and worked together and shared everything in common. The team members were African and European lay and religious who learnt from each other and proclaimed the Gospel message touching the lives of people positively. The team was an inspiration to the community in shanty areas.

Today KUAP is mission focused, performance based

and productivity oriented with strong participation from the community because of the seeds sown by Fr. Hans and the founding members.

Areas where KUAP-Pandipieri Works

The areas mandated to KUAP Pandipieri are in the informal settlements (slums)of Kisumu; they are overpopulated, lack infrastructures such as clean safe water and sanitation, houses, roads and affordable health care services. There is lack of gainful employment and the poverty level gives rise to concern for the care of children .
