Goal SettingWhat is wrong with this picture?
Goal Setting
Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. -Anonymous
Ultimately, it is only you who can set the right goal for yourself. Success is not always defined by others.
Setting the right goal can lead to this:
Serenity
Now for some rules that will benefit your learning!
Don’t text and learn - Cell Phone Policy
1. Researcha. Multi-tasking is actually less productive than focusing
on one task at a timeb. Devices take away focus - making it more difficult to
refocusc. Having cell phone out on table or desk, even on a date,
reduces the amount of socialization with others
Don’t text and learn - cont.1. Not a matter of Teacher Control; it is all about
self-controla. Regulating when is an okay time to have a device out and when is
not is the hardest thing to learn.b. Google is now banning its employees from using cell phones
during staff meetingsc. Laws have been made trying to stop people from being on
phones while driving - distractions cause accidents, even death
Don’t text and learn - cont.MOST IMPORTANTLY
Using devices in front of others shows them that they are not important to you anymore.
Relief in Mr. Sande’s class :)Simple. No cell phones or devices allowed in class:
1. You will learn more as a person and student than your peers who check their Twitter, Facebook, Instagram...
2. Addiction comes in many forms, devices being one of them. Your restraint in something as minor as Mr. Sande’s class will go a long way for future potential addictions.
3. Because I care. I want to see your eyes, hear your voice, and applaud your learning. I can’t do those things when you are more interested in the world outside my walls.
Don’t let life pass you by while you stare at a screen
Expectations1. Homework - your responsibility
a. Not assigned to destroy your lifeb. All meant to help you pass the AP Examc. Sometimes worth points, other times it's notd. Readings, writing assignments, projects
2. Late Worka. Within 1 week - 90% credit: Highest score you can receive is A-b. 2-4 Weeks Late - 50% credit: Turn stuff in!!!
Expectations: Retakes - must have all work turned in*1. Quizzes - MC and Vocab (Weekly)
a. You get to correct your own quiz for HALF points backb. Reasoning: Small Assessments that will not impact your grade as bad as tests or essaysc. On separate piece of paper find the following:
i. Correct Answerii. Page # in textbook of correct answer
iii. Explanation of why that answer is better than the answer you chose
2. Tests - MC and Short Answera. Same process, but you get all points back as high as an A-b. Reasoning: Tests are very long and can affect grade significantly; they are not meant to
destroy your GPA
3. Essaysa. Make changes on essay based on comments and scoreb. FULL points back for corrections
We are all free to make our own choices. We are then forced to live with the consequences of that choice.
TEST FORMAT 2 Sections:
Section I● 55 multiple-choice questions (55 minutes; 40 percent of exam score)● Four short-answer questions (50 minutes; 20 percent of exam score)
Section II● One document-based question (DBQ) (55 minutes, which includes a 15-minute reading period;
25 percent of exam score)● One long-essay question, chosen from a pair (35 minutes; 15 percent of exam score)
○ Choice between CCOT and C&C
We will look at examples of these over the next two weeks, but I wanted to talk about what it will look like
MC - Multiple Choice1. OLD WAY: Used to be based on general knowledge, very
little use of document or source analysis2. NEW WAY: All MC will be about a document
a. Ex: Questions 1-4 are based on the following passage… Use the following sculpture to answer the next three questions.
3. We will practice this tomorrow
SHORT ANSWER
1. Different way to demonstrate historical knowledge2. Short for a reason, could be three sentences; could be
three paragraphs3. No intro, no conclusion, no thesis4. Depends on your level of knowledge and writing
DBQ - Document Based Question1. Question based on multiple documents2. Many think it is the easiest part of the essay3. Changes:
a. PAST - 8-10 documents that needed to be cited and sourced in your essay while answering historical question
b. NOW - Less documents, more drawing of outside information to connect it to the prompt
4. Not to be taken lightly, 25% of the whole exam
CCOT/C&C - Change and Continuity Over Time and Compare and Contrast Essays1. Used to have to write both and they were equally
important2. Now you choose one3. Also only worth 15% of exam score, less than DBQ
