WEEKLY REMINDERSWeek 9 Term 3 2020
Mission Day Footy Colours
So what is the good news? 0% fee increase for 2021
Dear Parents I am writing to provide you with an important update for the 2021 school year. Firstly, I would like to sincerely thank you again for the contribution you make to your child’s education and our school community, through the fees you pay each year.
Decisions around school fees always consider accessibility and affordability, to ensure that all families who seek a Catholic education for their child can access one. As is the case in other Catholic schools, any fee increases at St Emilie’s are made within the limits set by our governing body, the Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia (CECWA), with affordability in mind.
In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the current recession, CECWA has decided that Catholic schools will not increase fees for 2021. This is a significant decision by our system leaders and the right one. We are also currently working closely with our outside providers to keep non-tuition costs such as camp, extracurricular opportunities, booklists and music lessons unchanged for 2021.
Many families have been, and may continue to be affected financially by the events of this year and by the state of the economy. This decision seeks to provide some certainty and support during such a challenging time. Here at St Emilie’s, we continue to guarantee the enrolment of your child, irrespective of your current financial position. In addition to our long-standing affordability measures, including family discounts and the Health Care Card Discount Scheme, the school continues to support families who are experiencing financial hardship. Please contact Mrs Gillian Norris and/or myself on 92569696, if you need to discuss your particular situation. Any arrangements made between parents and the school remains strictly confidential.
Fees are of course, an essential part of our school’s income, which, along with government education funding and the support available to our school as part of the Catholic Education Western Australia system, ensure that our school can continue to provide outstanding educational opportunities, excellent pastoral care and faith formation for our students.
We are extremely proud of our wonderful school and the way that in times of difficulty, staff, children and families rally together to support and care for each other. I sincerely thank every family in our school for your ongoing support and we look forward to continuing to provide your children with an excellent education that nurtures, challenges and supports them for school and for life.Yours sincerelyTania Thuijs, Principal

WEEKLY REMINDERSWeek 9 Term 3 2020
Mission Day Footy Colours Intentional Parenting is ImportantOne of the big challenges we have as parents, is to continue raising children of integrity, who will ideally grow up to use their time, gifts, personalities and imaginations, to shape a safer and more just world where kindness, goodness and compassion are the daily currency. How we raise kids matters and family life matters.
Parenting is essentially a relationship that requires daily thought, self-sacrifice, love, wisdom, kindness, compassion and intentionality. Being intentional in how we raise our children is all about reflecting on what really matters in this life and the values we want our children to live by. A child’s character is grown over time through multiple experiences and the values and modelling they are exposed to. And yes, this all happens amidst the calm and chaos of family life. If COVID has taught us anything, hopefully it has caused us to rethink how we use our time and the precious gift that family is.Time is a precious resource and the seemingly small day-to-day decisions we make, directly shape the course of our lives. To be an intentional parent means recognizing that time spent with our children is precious and limited, and that there is a long-lasting impact to how we decide to use the time we have with them.
One of the best ways to intentionally demonstrate love to our children is by simply paying attention and listening to them. It sounds simple, but of course it requires us to be deliberate in how we use our time. Parents need to be especially purposeful in quieting the distractions of entertainment, news and social media. Taking the time to mute the TV, put the phone down, put the tablet away and give your undivided attention to your child is a clear sign that they come first, not technology. Likewise be brave as a parent - limit your child’s screen time, set boundaries and keep kids off social media!
WEEKLY REMINDERSWeek 9 Term 3 2020
Mission Day Footy Colours Social Media isn’t for primary or middle school kids!1. Social media was not designed for them. A tween's underdeveloped frontal cortex can’t
manage the distraction nor the temptations that come with social media use. While you start
teaching responsible use of tech now, know that you will not be able to teach the maturity that
social media requires. Like trying to make clothes fit that are way too big, they will use social
media inappropriately until they are older and it fits them better.
2. Social media is an entertainment technology. It does not make your child smarter or more
prepared for real life or a future job; nor is it necessary for healthy social development. It is pure
entertainment attached to a marketing platform extracting bits and pieces of personal
information and preferences from your child every time they use it, not to mention hours of their
time and attention.
3. A child’s “more is better” mentality is a dangerous match for social media. Do they really
have 1,456 friends? Do they really need to be on it so many hours a day? Social media allows
(and encourages) them to overdo their friend connections like they tend to overdo other things
in their lives.
4. Social media is an addictive form of screen entertainment. And, like video game addiction,
early use can set up future addiction patterns and habits.
5. Social media replaces learning the hard social "work" of dealing face-to-face with peers,
a skill that they will need to practice to be successful in real life.
6. Social media can cause children to lose connection with family and instead view “friends”
as their foundation. Since the cognitive brain is still being formed, the need for your teen to be
attached to your family is just as important now as when they were younger. Make sure that
attachment is strong. While they need attachments to their friends, they need healthy family
attachment more.
7. Social media use represents lost potential for young teens. While one can argue that there
are certain benefits of social media for teens, the costs are very high during the teen years
when their brain development is operating at peak performance for learning new things. It is
easy for teens to waste too much of their time and too much of their brain in a digital world. We
know from many studies that it is nearly impossible for them to balance it all well.
