The administraon, faculty, and sta of WayneTrace Local Schools hope that yo u’re nding 2015to be everything that you had hoped it would be.Congratulaons to those of you who have keptyour resoluons. Hopefully, they are making animproved dierence in the quality of your life.

Speaking of quality, high academic expecta-

ons connue to be at the forefront as weprogress through the 2014-2015 school year.Educang our youth is a collecve eort betweenthe school and home, and your connued coop-eraon is needed as we place high demands onour students to perform at a high level in theclassroom. At mes, this means supporng whatmay be perceived as too much homework. Weare condent that our teachers do not assignhomework for the purpose of giving studentswork to do. The general goal of homework is toreinforce the lessons learned in the classroom.Again, school ocials appreciate your support aswe connue to strive for an improved overallrang on the Ohio Department of Educaonstate report card.

Speaking of rangs and the state report card, Iwould once again like to remind our parents/guardians and community members that thetesng system, as we currently know it, has

change this school year. Students in grades 3-8will be taking tests through the new PARCCsystem, an enrely on-line tesng process. Thebar has been signicantly raised this year. Earn-ing a “procient” score will no longer be apassing score. Students must earn what is nowconsidered to be an “accelerated” score in orderto be a passing score. This will likely have adramac impact on school building and schooldistrict rangs. As I’ve stated many mes, thefaculty and sta of Wayne Trace Local Schools isdedicated to teaching the state content stand-ards to its students each day, which in turnshould lessen the potenally negave eect ofmuch higher expectaons from the state level.

Connuing the academic theme… I would liketo take this opportunity to thank our administra-on, faculty, sta, and students for the mannerin which they have embraced the inux of tech-nology in our school district this year. The 1:1

iniave at the JH/HS building is going quite well,as very few problems have arisen during the rstve-plus months of school, and learning hastaken on a whole new look. And at both elemen-tary buildings, our students are being introducedto keyboarding at a younger age than everbefore, while our teachers are incorporangmore technology-based lessons due to the availa-bility of more computers. Addionally, ourWayne Trace Digital Academy is thriving againthis school year as approximately thirty studentsare ulizing some facon of the alternave-educaon possibilies that on-line learningprovides, while approximately twenty-onecollege-bound students report to the digitalacademy for on-line college classes takenthrough Northwest State CC. These twenty-onestudents are taking a total of twenty-eightcollege-level classes. Parents/guardians withquesons about any of the on-line learning

opons oered at Wayne Trace JH/HS shouldcontact Mr. Leeth or Mr. Alt for more infor-maon.

Turning to the district calendar: Due to thecombinaon of fog, snow, ice, and extremelycold temperatures, we are now in the posion ofmaking up at least one day of school. So… pleasemark your calendars for Monday, February 16 asa regular day of school. Should we need to makeup any more days, we will do our best tocommunicate this informaon to you in a melyfashion. Following February 16, the next possiblemake-up day is scheduled for May 29. Any addi-onal calamity days will be made up on June 2,June 3, etc. If you have any quesons about thedistrict calendar for this school year, feel free tocontact the principal’s oce at your child(ren)’sbuilding(s).

We connue to seek nominaons for theWayne Trace Sta Hall of Fame Class of 2015.

Please consider nominang a worthy former stamember who may have had an extraordinaryimpact on your life. Last month’s newsleercontained instrucons for how to make a nomi-naon, but if you have any quesons about thisprocess, feel free to contact the central oce.

The Ohio State Board of Educaon hasdesignated January as “School Board MemberAppreciaon Month.” The men and women whoserve on local boards of educaon do so out ofsincere interest in their local schools. With thatsaid, we would like to thank our local boardmembers for their service and dedicaon toWayne Trace Local Schools. Remember thatcommunity members are welcome to aendschool board meengs. Upcoming meengs willbe held on February 9 and March 9, starng at7:30 in the high school lecture room.

As always, if you have quesons or concernsabout your child’s educaonal experience at

Wayne Trace, feel free to contact your buildingprincipal or superintendent. Go Raiders!

    WT PAYNE ELEMENTARY

Jody L. Dunham, PrincipalThe arrival of February causes our students and

sta to focus on their nal preparaon for theupcoming PARCC and AIR assessments. Theseassessments are very dierent from state assess-ments in the past. There will be more parts toeach content area which means more tesngdays, more content areas assessed and they willbe administered on-line. Students will be using alaptop computer to take these assessments. Be

assured that our teachers and sta arecommied to providing the students with theknowledge and resources needed to beprepared. Beginning March 3, students will beginthe Performance Based Assessments componentof these on-line tests. Please call or email us ifyou have any quesons. Families are able tolearn more about Partnership for Assessment ofReadiness for College and Careers atwww.parcconline.org  or about AIR on the OhioDepartment of Educaon website found atwww.educaon.ohio.gov.

We wish to congratulate h grade studentCameron Stoller for correctly spelling the word“tulip” to become the building Spelling Beechampion and representave at the PauldingCounty Spelling Bee on February 2. We also wishto congratulate runner-up Waylon Smallwood forhis accomplishment.

It is me to begin to plan Kindergarten registra-

on for the 2015-2016 school year. Oponsinclude a possible Young 5's (Transional Kinder-garten) and a regular Tradional Kindergarten. Both programs are all day, every day programsthat provide students with a Kindergarten curric-ulum based on the Ohio  Department of  Educaon content standards. Students enrolledin Tradional Kindergarten will need to be 5years of age prior to August 1, 2015. Studentsenrolled in the Young 5's (Transional Kindergar-ten) must be 5 years of age on or before Septem-ber 30, 2015. It is important to note that theYoung 5's (Transional Kindergarten) classroomwill be conngent upon a minimum enrollmentas determined by Wayne Trace a dministraon.

All students interested in enrolling in eitherprogram are required to parcipate in the Kin-dergarten screening process. Screenings will takeplace at WTPE on April 20 and 21. To registeryour child for Kindergarten, parents need to call

Payne Elementary at 419-263-2512 or stop by theschool oce to pick up a Kindergarten registra-on packet.

It is vital for us to have current phone numbersand addresses for our students. It is importantthat we are able to contact parents when neces-sary. The Honeywell Instant Alert System makesit important that we have valid working numbersto let you know about school delays, cancella-ons and early dismissals. If you change yourcontact informaon or would like to add otherfamily members to this service, please contactthe school at 419-263-2512.

A very special “Thank You” to everyonewho parcipates in the Box Tops for Educaonprogram. We appreciate the me that you taketo clip the coupons and send them to WTPE. InJanuary, we received a check for over $961 forBox Tops collected. The money will be used foreducaonal assemblies. Way to go community!

As always, thank you for your connuedsupport of WTPE!

    WT GROVER HILL ELEMENTARY

    Kevin Wilson, PrincipaL

I would like to begin by congratulang FaithMeraz, this year’s Spelling Bee winner and IsaiahRienhouse, this year’s runner-up. Faith, thedaughter of Saul and Lucinda Meraz, will repre-sent WTGH at the Paulding County Spelling Beeon February 2. If for some reason Faith is unableto parcipate, Isaiah Rienhouse, the son ofTodd and Aimee Rienhouse will take Faith’s

place as the WTGH representave. Congratula-ons to Faith and Isaiah, as well as all the parci-pated in this year’s Spelling Bee.

There is one important calendar change to benoted for the month of February. On Monday,February 16, President’s Day school will be insession. This day was originally scheduled as aholiday for the students and sta, but with thetypical northwest Ohio weather we have missedtoo many student hours and must use this day asa make-up day. Please note this date on yourschool calendars.

Also, this month is a me to begin preparaonfor next school year. One major event we arepreparing for is Kindergarten Screening. Eventhough Kindergarten Screening is not unl Aprilwe need to begin the process in February. So, atthis me we are making preparaons for thisyear’s screening. If you have a child who will beve before September 30, 2015 and plan for

them to aend Kindergarten or Young 5s classnext year, you need to contact the Grover HillElementary oce for registraon informaon. You may contact the Grover Hill Elementaryoce at 419-399-4100 to begin this registraonprocess.

    WT JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL

    Greg Leeth, Principal

At the junior/senior high school build-ing, new tests are being given in Reading, Math, and Science in grades 7 and 8. These testsrequire students to show mastery of much morecomplex skills and are much more me consum-ing than the previous Ohio Achievement Assess-

On Tuesday, January 27, Antwerp LocalSchool had the unfortunate experience of beingthe victim of a bomb threat. Although this wasnot something we expected, I am so proud ofour staff and students for their cooperation and behavior. In this newsletter, I have often stat-ed the importance of keeping your HoneywellInstant Alert account updated and accurate. This situation was a reminder to each of us.Even if you do not want to get notifications fordelays and cancellations, keep your infor-mation updated and check the box to receive“HIGH IMPORTANCE” alerts. Our first pri-ority will be to make sure the students are safeand the next will be to keep parents informed.

Our first responders also did an excellent joband we appreciate their help.

The second semester of the 2014-2015 schoolyear got off to a rough start with the rain, snow, fog, and ice. We have missed schooleight days this year, so we will be in session onPresident’s Day, February 16 as a make-upday, as well as May 21 and May 22. Any addi-tional days missed will be added to the end ofthe school year. With many cold and snowydays before us, I would like to remind parentsto have students dress warmly when waitingfor the bus. The decision to delay or cancelschool is always difficult, but the determiningfactor will always be the safety of our students.I appreciate the work of all our bus drivers, who have a very difficult job to do.

The annual organizational meeting for theschool board was held on January 12, 2015.Dennis Recker was elected President and MarkRyan was elected Vice President. Also servingon the board this year are Anita Bok, Bob Her- ber, and Kipp Taylor. Monthly meetings in2015 will be the third Thursday of each month. The next regular meeting is Thursday, Febru-ary 19 at 6:00 in the Board of Education Con-ference Room.

Antwerp is hosting the Paulding CountySpelling Bee on Monday, February 2, and westill have many athletic events during themonth of February. Please check the calendarand plan to attend an event to support our stu-dents.

If you have children in our district, please planto attend Parent-Teacher Conferences on Feb-ruary 10 or February 17. Communication be-tween home and school is an important factorin success for all students. Working togetherwill make Antwerp Local Schools a strongerdistrict.

    Yours in Education,Pat Ross

    MR. BUTE—HS/MS PRINCIPAL

The first semester grades are completed andgrade cards have been sent. I would like toremind students and parents how to calculatefirst semester grades. The first two grading periods are worth 40% each, while the semes-ter exam is worth 20% of the final grade.Winter athletic eligibility  is determined bygrades earned during the  second grading peri-od, not the semester average.

As we move into February, we continue prepa-ration for the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT).The OGT (all 10th grade students and any 11thor 12th grade students who haven’t passed allfive areas) will be administered March 16-27,2015. I strongly encourage families to avoid planning any trips or vacations during thistime. The spring OGT will be given to allsophomores and any juniors/seniors whohaven’t passed all five content areas (Reading,Writing, Math, Social Studies, and Science).

Ohio has implemented College- and Career-Ready standards which our students will beassessed on. The state’s goal is to develop acommon set of K-12 assessments in the sub- jects of English, Math, Social Studies, andScience that will be administered in the 2014-2015 school year. New Generation of Assess-ments will begin this upcoming Spring 2015.

The New Generation of Assessments will becomposed of the PARCC (English LanguageArts and Mathematics) and AIR (Social Stud-ies and Science). Each of those assessmentswill be made up of two types of assessments,Performance Based (PBA) and End of Year(EOY) Assessments. The PBA will be admin-istered when approximately 75% of the schoolyear is completed and the EOY will be admin-istered when approximately 90% of the schoolyear is completed. These are on-line assess-ments that will challenge our students’ aca-demic and technical skills.

The PBA’s testing window will begin on Tues-day, February 17 and run through March 20,2015. Your student’s individual teachers will be communicating the testing schedule for theupcoming assessments.

Our current middle school students, who aretaking high school courses for credit, will takethe high school PBA and EOY for that course. The 8th grade students, who are taking highschool courses for credit, can begin earning points towards their graduation eligibility.

    MR. MANZ—ELEMENTARY

Grade cards have been sent out, the Christmas break and holiday season is over, and we nowset our sights on upcoming Ohio’s State Testsfor grades 3-5. Ohio’s testing program hastransitioned to new, online, tests that will befully implemented this year. These online testswill include both Performance-Based Assess-ments (PBA) and End-of-Year (EOY) that are

more rigorous and in-depth than the testingsystem of the past years. The PBAs will betaken during the weeks of February 15— March 6. The EOY will be scheduled duringthe weeks of April 13—May 5. These testswill be broken into different sessions so thatthe students are not testing for extended peri-ods of time in one day. Our teachers and staffhave done an excellent job of helping to pre- pare our students to be successful on thesetests.

    Elementary Testing Schedule:Grade 3 OAA Reading—April 21Grade 3 Math PBA—Feb. 26 & March 2Grade 4 ELA PBA—Feb. 17, 19 & 24

    Grade 4 Math PBA—Feb. 26 & March 2Grade 4 Social Studies—March 4Grade 5 ELA PBA—Feb. 17, 19 & 24Grade 5 Math PBA—Feb. 26 & March 2Grade 5 Science PBA—March 4

This year we will be holding Parent-TeacherConferences in the spring. These will be heldfrom 4:00-7:30 PM on February 10 and 17.These conferences are intended mainly forstudents who are struggling and need extrahelp, but feel free to contact your child’s teach-er to schedule an appointment even if one isnot requested.

Don’t forget that the PTO Bingo Night isscheduled for February 23, 2015, at 6:00 PM,with doors opening at 5:30. Bingo cards will

be available for $1 per card, with all of themoney being given back as prizes. There willalso be many other prizes that can be won, socome out for a night of fun and entertainment.

I want to thank everyone for their continuedhelp and understanding when dropping-off and picking-up students. I would just like to re-mind you that students should be dropped offin the small circle drive or in the parking lot. When getting dropped off in the parking lot, elementary students should be escorted, at leastto the sidewalk, by an adult or older sibling. When getting picked up, elementary studentsshould be either picked up in the small circledrive, or escorted to the parking lot by an adultor older sibling. Thank you for followingthese guidelines. Once again, we request this

with our students’ safety at the fore-front ofour minds.
