Reading – Episode 6 Mr ToadWrite the answers to these questions:

• What do Rat and Mole remove from Toad? Why do they do this?

• What trick does Toad play on Badger when they have a discussion in the room together?

• Toad says, ‘No!’ he said, a little sullenly, but stoutly; ‘I’m NOT sorry. And it wasn’t folly at all! It was simply glorious!’

What do the words stoutly and folly mean in this sentence?

• How does Toad escape from house arrest?

• What crimes has Toad been accused of?

• What does the court decide should be Toad’s punishment?

• What sentence at the end of the episode suggests that this is not the first time Toad has been in court?

TASK

Do you think that Toad has been treated fairly and deserves to go to prison?

Write down your opinion with supporting evidence from what you know of the story so far.

English Task • In today’s episode of Wind and the Willows, Toad finds himself appearing before a

magistrate in court for stealing a motor car and driving dangerously. Within the episode, the scene where he is actually caught by the police is missing. We would like you to write this missing scene using your own ideas. Try to include details that answer these questions:

• Where does Toad get caught?

• How is Toad caught?

• Are Mole, Rat or Badger there?

• How does Toad feel when he is caught?

• Is Toad sorry?

Remember all of the usual things we look for in a piece of writing too e.g. adjectives for description, accurate punctuation, grammar & handwriting.

You can use your word banks that you created last week to help you.

English – Toad’s Adventures – Q & A

Imagine that you are journalist and have been given the chance to attend a secret press conference with Toad to interview him on his escape from prison.

Write down the questions that you would ask him and write the accompanying answers that you think he would give. For example:What did you think when the gaoler’s daughter shared her plan with you for you to escape?

I didn’t think she was serious at first but then I saw how upset she was that I had dismissed her idea and I realised she was serious. She had been very kind to me inside the prison, bringing me food and listening to my stories that I realised she just wanted to help me. I was taken aback but thought that it was a very clever idea and asked her if I could meet her aunt, the washer woman.
