Weekly Newsletter —November 29, 2019 — Issue 36

Dear Mackellar Families, Term 4 is always an exciting term and with December fast approaching, we are about to enter our busiest time of the year. Our Grade 6 students are bracing themselves for new beginnings and wonderful adventures as they look forward to their Transition Day whilst they also prepare for their formal Graduation. There will be many excursions across the school and important whole school celebrations and events. Please keep a close eye on our XUNO calendar and our most recent newsletters that will continue to keep everyone informed. Most importantly, as we approach this busy time, I hope you also remember to take time to relax. We all know just how exhausted we can feel by the end of the year if we allow ourselves to become over-whelmed by the many additional responsibilities that the season may bring.

Building Developments We have recently installed a ramp near the gymnasium and we are also having new doors intstalled around the building. This will impact on our main entrance and you will notice that the area will have protective screens where the corridor will be narrowed. Where possible, works occur out of school hours, such as the ramp which was installed over the weekend.

School-wide Positive Behaviour Support - SWPBS Over the next few months, you will notice more signage around the school that clearly promotes what is important to us at Mackellar. We are thrilled to announce that we have spectacular posts for each value, currently located in the gym. Colourful wristbands will accompany our Student of the Week certificates as from this Monday. There are many more developments in 2020 that we are looking forward to implementing, such as our SWPBS matrix that is currently under design and construction.

Mackellar’s Birthday Celebration Mackellar’s 28th birthday is this Wednesday the 4th of December. To celebrate, children may wear their PARTY clothes to school on the day if they want to. We are holding a whole school disco in the gym at lunchtime. No gold coin is required for this event. Teach-ers are also looking forward to dancing along at the disco. As our school journeys towards its 30th milestone birthday, we feel extremely proud of the diverse and inclusive community that has evolved over the past 28 years. We are proud of our wonderful Mackellarians, past and present, and the contribution they make to the world.

Staffing News

It is with great pleasure to announce that David Cocks has been appointed as Mackellar Primary School’s Assistant Principal. David has joined Dean Darmanin, also Assistant Principal, to lead our school into an exciting new chapter. David has extensive experience in diverse educational settings both interstate and overseas. His innovative approach to curriculum will ensure that students at Mackellar Primary School are ‘empowered with the means to engineer their own future’.

Congratulations also to Meghann Wurm who has been appointed as our Learning Specialist. Meghann brings experience and exemplary professional standards to this role.

Special Guest Appearance at the Honey Pot Café Brimbank Councillor, Margaret Giudice, was our special guest at The Honey Pot Café today and she was extremely impressed with the service and hospitality provided by our student catering team. Margaret chatted with families as she enjoyed her wonderful, freshly brewed coffee with a delicious cup cake. Keep your eye on The Star Weekly online newspaper where an article will appear about Mac-kellar’s very own café that is also a student initiative.

Annual Twilight Family Evening Monday the 16th of December is an important evening for our school community where we celebrate another year of learning and growing together. The gates will open at 5.30pm and the event will close at 7.30pm. There will be a sausage sizzle and beverages sold at the canteen. Our school band will start playing at 5.45pm and the concert will begin at 6.00pm. Teachers are starting to prepare their items with their grades. We are looking forward to sharing the evening with all students and their families.

Generous Toy Donations Mackellar’s partnership with St. Vincent de Paul Society has continued and once again, families may donate a wrapped toy to school and label the package with a child’s age and gender. Toys will be collected by St Vincent De Paul on Thursday 12th December and given to less fortunate families. All students who donate a gift will have their photo and decoration displayed on our Christmas tree near the office.

PREP TOY EXPO – Friday 29th November Our Prep students are learning about Toys as part of their Inquiry unit. They have been learning about the materials that toys are made of and how toys move. Students have planned, designed and made their own toys from boxes and are now in the process of painting and decorating their toys for their Toy Expo tomorrow, where they will showcase their work to their parents and Grade 6 buddies.

Parent Morning Tea Our Parent Morning Tea will be held in the staffroom on Wednesday the 11th of December at 11.05am to 11.35am. We are looking for-ward to your company so we can acknowledge your contribution to our community as well as celebrate your child’s year.

SunSmart Reminder We are pleased to see most children wearing their hats this term, however sometimes children forget to bring them to school. If students don’t have a hat, they are restricted from playing where they would like to in the yard as they need to be under the shaded areas. Please remember that during Term 4, all students require a hat when playing outside. Our SunSmart policy also applies to Term 1. No Hat = No Play The skin on our face, ears and neck is much thinner and more sensitive to UV damage, therefore we must choose hats that provide shade to our face, head, neck and ears. When choosing a hat, please make it: - wide brim - bucket - legionnaire Baseball caps are not acceptable at school because they are not a good option for everyday sun protection as they only protect our scalp and forehead.

Teeth On Wheels Teeth on Wheels will be returning to our school for the 6 monthly dental visits. To make filling out the consent form easier, you can now complete your child’s consent form online by following the link below. It only takes 5 minutes to complete and by reducing the amount of paper being used, we will be helping the team out by being more environmentally friendly. https://teethonwheels.com.au/consent-eform The date of the children’s dental visit will be starting on Monday the 9th of December 2019, so please ensure if you didn’t complete a form at the start of the year to have this completed ASAP! 2020 Book Pack & Essential Learning Items Each student’s book pack contains stationery items that are essential to support the course of instruction in our standard curriculum. These are items the school deems compulsory for learning. The school orders these materials on behalf of parents due to the purchasing power of the school ordering in bulk. This is the most cost effective manner of providing these resources to students. It is essential that this charge be paid prior to each student receiving this book pack. This Fee also includes provision of ‘The Resilience Project’ Planner, ICT (educational software subscriptions) and Kitchen Garden Food Tech Levy.

PAYMENT OPTIONS:- 1. Payment can be made online using XUNO or

2. Payment can be made at the office by cash, EFT, or credit card up until Wednesday 18 December 2019

CSEF (Camps, Sports & Excursions Fund) If you are a holder of a GOVERNMENT CONCESSION CARD you may be eligible to receive CSEF ($125.00 per child) to contribute towards the cost of Camps, Sports and Excursions. Application forms are available at the office. IF YOU HAVE APPLIED FOR CSEF IN 2019 YOU DO NOT NEED TO RE-APPLY FOR 2020 Eligibility To be eligible* for the fund, a parent or legal guardian of a student attending a registered Government or non-government Victorian primary or secondary school must: • on the first day of Term one, or; • on the first day of Term two; a) Be an eligible beneficiary within the meaning of the State Concessions Act 2004, that is, be a holder of Veterans Affairs Gold Card or be an eligi-ble Centrelink Health Care Card (HCC) or Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) holder, OR b) Be a temporary foster parent, and;

c) Submit an application to the school by the due date.
