Don’t worry; you’re not alone (e.g., Matthew 26:40-43). Mental drift is our greatest challenge to “be constant in prayer” (Romans 12:12 ESV) and to “pray without ceasing”(I Thess 5:17). How can we fix it? A number of possible solutions can be offered to help us stay focused in prayer. We can pray aloud, even while we are alone. We can write our prayers and even keep them in a prayer journal. These can be effective means to avoid mental drift. But what do you do when you cannot find the words to pray? Even though Scripture assures us the Spirit com- municates our hearts‘ desires with the Father (Romans 8:26-27), we are left very frustrated when we cannot articulate our feelings. We read the Bible as normal, but instead of imagining God speaking to us we imagine we are speaking to Him. We use His Word as our words. Certain sections of Scripture are naturally better suited to prayer, such as the Psalms. But technically, we can pray anything in the Bible. We shall demonstrate. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). A prayer can be built off this glorious verse. “In the beginning”: “Father, help me to recognize that nothing is before You, that You are the first and the last, and that kingdoms and civilizations have risen and fallen, and yet You remain. Help me to take the long view of life, to live with eternity in mind.” “God created”: “Father, help me to recognize Your power is supreme, and mine is not. Have you ever struggled with prayer? Have you ever fumbled

over your words, repeated the same words, or struggled to find words at

all? Has you mind ever wandered away from your prayer, leaving you feel-

ing frustrated and guilty? Have you ever fallen asleep while trying to pray?

Don’t worry; you’re not alone (e.g., Matthew 26:40-43). Mental drift is our

greatest challenge to “be constant in prayer” (Romans 12:12 ESV) and to

“pray without ceasing”(I Thess 5:17). How can we fix it?

A number of possible solutions can be offered to help us stay

focused in prayer. We can pray aloud, even while we are alone. We can

write our prayers and even keep them in a prayer journal. These can be

effective means to avoid mental drift. But what do you do when you cannot

find the words to pray? Even though Scripture assures us the Spirit com-

municates our hearts‘ desires with the Father (Romans 8:26-27), we are

left very frustrated when we cannot articulate our feelings. This is where

praying the Bible can be so effective.

Praying the Bible has gained popularity in recent years, but the

practice is ancient. How does it work? It is simple. We read the Bible as

normal, but instead of imagining God speaking to us we imagine we are

speaking to Him. We use His Word as our words. Certain sections of

Scripture are naturally better suited to prayer, such as the Psalms. But

technically, we can pray anything in the Bible. We shall demonstrate.

You are the first and the last, and that kingdoms and civilizations have risen

and fallen, and yet You remain. Help me to take the long view of life, to live

with eternity in mind.” “God created”: “Father, help me to recognize Your

power is supreme, and mine is not. Instill me with wonder when I look

upon the world You have created. Humble me, and help me to surrender

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are

young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”

I Timothy 4:12

Going back to the gym is getting easier each day when the alarm goes off. But makes me think of people who give up on themselves, it maybe too hard or take too much time could be the excuses? Remember the story of Jonah? God told him to go preach in Nineveh. Jonah refused and ran in the other direction. He got thrown out of a boat and swallowed by a big fish who later spit him out on the beach. What did God say next? "That's it for you, Jonah. You can just stay on the beach and feel guilty from now on." Not even close! Instead, the Bible says... Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time (Jonah 3:1). God didn't take Jonah out of service. He sent him back to Nineveh, say-ing, in effect, "Now go back to doing what I called you to do." If you've lost some major battles in life, you may be tempted to think that God is finished with you. It's not true. The problem is not that God gives up on his people. The problem is that his people give up on themselves. Many believers, after getting knocked down by sin, decide to never get up. "What's the use? Why bother? I'll just stay down here from now on." You won't be let off quite that easy. God calls you to repentance. He calls you to confront your sin and deal with it His way. And after you have gotten back on your feet, God reminds you His Word remains the same. Trust God and obey Him even when you can’t trace His steps, you can always trust His heart. So, often when I started going back to the gym, the snooze button was so easy to hit, to the point of maybe not going, but now it’s a route and a challenge. I am hoping and challenge myself, when a trial comes, not to hit the snooze button, but to take it head on, and let God lead me like He lead Jonah. Todd
