Welcome Back

2012 Gala Dinner

Welcome back to school for Term 2. We hope you had a good break. You will notice some changes that have happened in the short time since the end of Term 1.

We opened two new child care rooms this week. These new rooms allow us to reconfigure our Early Learning Centre at Noah’s Ark to have two child care rooms and three pre-prep rooms. It also means we have some vacancies, so please contact Noah’s Ark if you would like to take one of the available places.

The roof is going on to the new sports centre this week. Once this is done, the builders can start the big job of working on the inside without being so vulnerable to the weather.

As usual, it is a busy term coming up. Please keep an eye on the app for details of all the activities. We update the app every day, so it is the best source for the very latest information.

Save the date - Saturday June 2 - 2012 Gala Dinner This will be a night of fine food and great entertainment. This year, money raised will be in support of ‘missioneducate’ - a

Christian aid organisation that works towards establishing schools and education programs for the people of Mozambique.

More details will follow shortly. However, in the meantime, talk to your friends about perhaps organising a table of eight for this great night. Tickets will be $60 per head or $55 per head in a table of 8.

First Day Fun for JoeysTerm 2 marks an interesting milestone for Noah’s Ark

with the reopening of our former child care premises and the expansion of our senior kindergarten and pre-prep classes.

Children in Joeys all enjoyed exploring the new natu-ral outside areas and bright new play equipment as well as having lots of fun indoors whilst getting to know their new environment.

We welcome Celine Ndubisi to the Joeys team along with Tracey Verreynne in the Wombats Pre Prep room.

Parenting with Power

Scripture of the week:

Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it.

~ Proverbs 22:6

How to train a child

When you feel overwhelmed by the poor behaviour of your child, here’s an exercise that will give you some direction. In fact, this activity is helpful for any parent looking for ways to help their child grow, but it’s especially helpful when you’re confused and overwhelmed by a problem’s complexity or deeply-rooted na-ture.

Start by making a list of the problems you’ve seen in your child in the last few days. This isn’t a list to show to your child but it’s a working list so that you can gain some perspective in your dis-cipline. You’re looking for examples of problems that need to be addressed. Look for behaviours, their causes, and common are-nas where the problem takes place. In this step, you’re simply gathering data and making observations.

Next, group the offenses around character qualities. That is, look for common threads in the offenses that are an indication of a deeper heart issue. For example, you may be seeing selfishness demonstrated or meanness or lack of respect for authority.

Next, you want to name the positive quality your child needs. Possibly kindness, responsibility, honour or respect for others.

Once you have the character quality chosen, you can develop a practical definition for it and concrete ways to demonstrate the quality. Share this new quality with your child in a positive way, communicating hope in the process. Talk about what it means and how the child will benefit from this quality now and in the future. Then practise, practise, practise. Reinforce this new quality by sharing demonstrations of it in the lives of other people you know, and affirm your child when you see it. “I like the obedience I’m seeing” and “doesn’t it feel good to be responsible and care for your pet?”

Behaviour problems are temporary, but the character you work on in your child’s heart will help your child now and in the future.

Strategy for the week: Make your list this week as you see be-haviours you know need changing. Sort out the qualities you want to work on and begin to encourage your child in those areas. If you focus on one thing for a week you will start to see improvement in that area.

~ In His service,

Klaus Knobloch and Rosemary Whincop

SecondarySome Words of Advice for Life

As parents, we want to protect our children from life’s difficul-ties, but that is not always possible. It is important for us as par-ents to teach our children how to cope with the challenges that will come their way in life. Building resilience and teaching cop-ing mechanisms is the very best we can do for them. Here are just a few pointers on doing life.

Remember These Words• Don’t let go of hope.

Hope gives you the strength to keep going when you feel like giving up.

• Don’t ever quit believing in yourself. As long as you believe you can, you will have a reason for trying.

• Don’t let anyone hold your happiness in their hands; hold it in yours, so it will always be within your reach.

• Don’t measure success or failure by material wealth, but by how you feel; our feelings determine the richness of our lives.

• Don’t let bad moments overcome you; be patient, and they will pass.

• Don’t hesitate to reach out for help; we all need it from time to time.

• Don’t run away from difficulties, but learn to find ways of solving problems, because we learn a lot about ourselves and develop confidence.

• Don’t wait for what you want to come to you; go after it with all that you are, knowing that life will meet you halfway.

• Don’t feel like you’ve lost when plans and dreams fall short of your hopes. Anytime you learn something new about yourself or about life, you have progressed.

• Don’t do anything that takes away from your self-respect; feeling good about yourself is essential to feeling good about life.

• Don’t ever forget how to laugh or be too proud to cry. It is by doing both that we live life to its fullest.

Always remember –

God has not given up on you! Don’t give up on Him.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

We will look further at building resilience next week.

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. Remem-ber God’s esteem. Ideal Valentine. I’ll keep you in my prayers. Why/How.

~ Rhonda Bevan, Head of Secondary

GeneralNew Vocal Teacher For King’s

Hi My name is Liza Beamish. I’m the new singing teacher at King’s - and I’m really looking forward to meeting you all. I was trained at the Conservatorium in Brisbane, but went on to study with some of the best teachers the world has to offer in London and Vienna. I was a soloist with Opera Aus-tralia, Opera Queensland and toured for a year in England with a leading role in a Mo-zart opera called “The Magic Flute”. As well as that, I was in the cast of Phantom of the

Opera in the original production in Melbourne. But I’d hate you to think that all I do is opera! I have done loads of “session sing-ing” throughout my career, both in London and Sydney, doing back up and lead vocals on TV ads. You may even have heard me already, singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, on the “Sunsu-per” ads on TV.

These days, I’m really enjoying teaching, but I still do a lot of professional singing. If you’d like to hear me just google “Sunsu-per ads”, or go to either of my websites: www.lizabeamish.com or www.lizaandlachlan.com To contact me, phone 0413 046106.

Instrumental MusicIf you are new to the college, or keen to learn, now is the time

to enrol to learn a musical instrument!Learning a musical instrument is not only fun, but research

shows that participation in the arts can encourage self-discipline as well as improve behaviour, confidence, self-esteem and team skills. Playing a musical instrument can also increase memory, reasoning capacity and time management skills.

The college offers music lessons for all instruments. Lessons are available as a group lesson in strings, brass, woodwind, percus-sion and bass guitar; or privately for all of these instruments as well as piano, guitar and drum kit.

Enrolment forms are available from all college reception areas, or they can be downloaded from the college website.

A Thankful HeartQuote from Walk in Faith by Ray McCauley

Now one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God.

Luke 17:15Only one of the lepers returned to praise and thank the Lord.

Only one of them really knew the source of his healing, and he was the only one to return. What happened? Probably, at least one went away and said, “I wasn’t really sick.” Perhaps another went thinking that the problem had only been in his mind. An-other probably thought to himself, “healing just comes naturally.” People have the same attitude today. There are hundreds who have been healed, delivered and set free by the miracle working power of God in this ministry and yet have not returned to thank the Lord for His grace, mercy, love and healing power upon their lives.

Have a thankful heart for all that He has done for you.

Some people we know have become successful businessmen through God’s power upon their lives, but today are too busy to return and sit at the feet of Jesus. Don’t be one of the nine - too busy or preoccupied to return and thank God for all that He has done in your life.

Have an attitude of gratitude. If you wish to contact Guy Ormerod, College Chap-

lain, you can write to - [email protected] or pastoral care: Kerrilee Walsingham - [email protected]

SecondaryLeadership @ King’s

As part of the College’s mission of “Educating Students in Christian Leader-ship for Tomorrow’s Generation”, 20 Year 10 students participated in leadership training during the co-curricular programme in Term 1. The aim of the pro-gramme is to equip the Year 10 students for their roles as seniors and leaders of the College student body over the next three years, for the leadership roles they will fulfill and positions they will assume in their adult lives.

Each of the eight sessions was based on leadership development resources developed by Dr. Tim Elmore author of “Generation iY – Our Last Chance to Save Their Future”. Dr. Elmore is also the founder and president of Growing Leaders, an Atlanta (USA) based non-profit organization created to develop emerging leaders.

The theme of the eight training sessions was “How to Lead Yourself” and focused on equipping the students to master and manage their own discipline, emotions, character and identity. The Growing Leaders resources are Bible-based and allow for valuable insight into what God’s word requires of us in relation to leading ourselves and others.

During some of the sessions, students were required to:

* Compile a list of their core values and formulated their own mission and vision statements. * Compile a personal inventory of their qualities, abilities, passions, and the opportunities they have and want to create to utilize these to impact other peoples’ lives. * Reflect on all external influences (media, parents, peers, teachers, music, etc.) in their lives and the affect these have on them. * Thereafter they had to identify what they should expose themselves to, to help them live out their missions and achieve their vision.* Complete various leadership activities.

During the Term 3 co-curricular programme the College will again run a Leadership Training programme, which will center on building relationship skills in leaders.

Parents who wish to find out more about how they can develop their child’s leadership skills are encouraged to visit the Growing Lead-ers website (www.growingleaders.com). Dr Elmore’s book, “Generation iY – Our Last Chance to Save Their Future” is also an invaluable resource to help parents understand this generation and the challenges they face.

Remember that your child needs training and guidance to develop their God-given leadership qualities.

~ Jorrie Oosthuizen, Year 10 Coordinator

PrimaryKing’s library staff would like to thank all the generous grand-

parents and special friends for donating many new and lovely books to both our main library and resource centre from Grand-parents Day, held last term.

Grandparents Day, held on March 23rd, is a wonderful occasion for our King’s primary students to share their school experiences with family. Both the library and resource centre are favourite places for many of our students, and the book stall allows their

grandparents to peruse the current resources and fiction used in schools today.

All our primary students from Prep to Year 7 are always very ex-cited to receive new additions to our collection. I especially hope the grandparents, families and students of those in Years 6 and 7 enjoyed their last year together at this special event.

God bless,

~ Miss Rachel Solyom

Sport NewsNews from the King’s Locker Room

Hi everyone,Welcome back to sport for Term 2. We are looking forward

to some exciting times with both the primary and high school APS competitions kicking off. We are confident that many of our teams will do well and be undefeated and win premierships. We also have the APS and District Cross Country carnivals midway through the term, as well as the P-3 Fun Run. Then to finish the term we have the Upper Primary Athletics Carnival, which is al-ways the highlight of my year.

There has been no rest over the holidays for some of our sport-ing groups, which you will hear more about below. I would like to personally thank Roscoe Deacon and Jorrie Oosthuizen who

gave up three days of their holidays to train and organise a game against Melbourne Grammar for our 1st XV Rugby Team. The boys are look-ing very good and I am excited about the prospect of them chal-lenging all of the APS teams and maybe even winning King’s first ever 1st XV premiership. Jarrod Stevens also had our runners out pounding the pavement and the hills at Burleigh Beach and Pizzey Park. Thank you to Jarrod and all the parents who volun-teered their time to give our students that little extra training and helping build team morale.

~ Jason Grady, Director of Sport (P-12)

Cross CountryOn the last day of Term 1, King’s held it’s annual cross country

carnival in what can only be described as glorious conditions for running! It wasn’t too hot, there was no wind and just a slight sprinkle of rain to cool us down! The course offered a few hills, plenty of flat ground and most importantly, a little bit of mud to get through! Runners were greeted with a huge inflatable start line area for the first time, and on entering the final stretch, an-other large inflatable finish line which added to the excitement of the day.

The primary carnival kicked off the day’s proceedings, where there was fierce competition between the houses! The Finney teachers were pumped and helped get Finney over the line for House spirit. At the end of the day however, it’s not about how loud you are, it’s how quick you can get around the course and Tyndale proved to be comfortable winners in the end!

A special mention and congratulations to our top 5 place get-ters from each age group. Students who were successful in plac-ing in the top 8 finishers for their age group gained selection into the King’s APS Cross Country Team.

The APS Rugby competition has arrived! The APS rugby competition is finally here and the King’s boys

are ready to go! The 1st XV have been working exceptionally hard over the Easter holidays, putting in extra training sessions at school as well as a very tough game against Melbourne Gram-mar School.

The Melbourne Grammar School (MGS) game was played on Tuesday, 10 April at Nerang Bulls Rugby Club. MGS, a school of over 800 boys, are the defending 2011 1st XV Premiers in the Vic-toria State Championship. The school has a well-structured and established rugby programme, with a strong supporters’ base, and are widely considered to be the top rugby school in Victoria.

King’s went down 50-24 to a very strong MGS side who were clearly bigger, faster and stronger than our boys. However, the at-titude and courage displayed by the team, in fighting to the end and never giving up, were attributes that cannot be coached and will stand them in good stead in the future.

King’s fought valiantly and managed to claw their way back to being within two points of MGS midway through the second half with some well worked tries. The pace and physicality of the game was a step up from what any team from King’s has ever encountered and this took its toll on our boys in the final quarter. Our boys have learnt from the experience and are now more bat-tle hardened. This has equipped them well for the APS competi-tion and our aim is to bring this intensity to the competition.

Round 1 of the APS competition will be against All Saints An-glican School this Friday. Kick off is at 2pm at All Saints. Your sup-port will be most welcome and much appreciated.

To keep up with all the College rugby news, visit The King’s Rugby Club Facebook page.

AthleticsWith the athletics carnivals fast approaching, the KATS Athlet-

ics Squad is about to take it the next level with more training ses-sions added into the program. For the first six weeks of term we will have Monday afternoon (3:20-4:20pm) and Thursday morn-ing (7-8am) sessions available for those who are in the squad. Monday afternoon will focus on all events, while Thursday morn-ing will specifically target sprints, middle distance, shot put and discus.

Every age group in the primary now has a solid team training together to develop their skills, improve on their personal bests and ultimately work together to be number 1 at APS. There have been some individual stand out results from some high school students in the benchmark testing, however there are still places available. Get an application form from Mr Grady if you are inter-ested in becoming part of our squad.

Cross Country Holiday TrainingRunning training continued over the Easter holiday break with

four sessions offered to our APS team members, and I was very pleased to see a great turn out each session. We are now coming into the business end of the training program and the big inter-school races are fast approaching.

For primary students, you guys have the APS Carnival (OUR BIG RACE!!!!!) but also the district south cross country championship, which is the selection trials for the South Coast Championship (which leads on to QLD and National Champs). So you must treat this race seriously if you desire a south coast or QLD jacket for cross country.

As for secondary students, you only have the APS Champion-ship, and this event is your stepping stone race to higher rep lev-els. There is however, one other important race for all you high level and/or keen XC athletes is the QLD All-Schools XC Champs. This is held in Brisbane every year, and is the biggest XC event on the school calendar! It is being held on May 5 (all age groups) and I would like to enter as many individual runners and teams (3 x student = team, no limit to how many teams per age we nomi-nate), so if any student is interested in learning more or nominat-ing, please speak to me ASAP as nominations CLOSE APRIL 30.

See you all next session,

~ James Clark, King’s XC/Athletics Head Coach

The key to success is to practice, practice, practice. We are get-ting heaps of running training in, but until you have competed in an organized event, it is sometimes hard to measure what level you are at compared with the greater community and other schools. Learning how to pre-plan a race is a valuable weapon to have in what is already a mentally and physically exhausting event. Therefore, I am pushing for all King’s runners to rise to the challenge and enter into one of the many up-coming running events. I strongly feel this is a key to King’s becoming a stronger school at APS level, and that is exactly what I want! Here is a list of some to chose from.
