We’re just finishing up another round of fashion week (more from this in our next issue!) and Eid-ul-Azha is around the corner. Summer is slowing, giving way to milder temperatures, bringing with it an air of festivity and the prospect of winter. What fun! In this issue, we bring you another fabulous editorial shoot with the fresh faced Saheefa Jabbar, photographer MHM of 360 degrees and our go-to makeup guru Shoaib Khan, in which we’ve put together some fun Eid ensembles from local high street brands. eJust the other day, I was talking to a friend who went to college with me, and expressed my desire to go back to our women’s-only cocoon. She asked me, “Sanaa, do you re-ally want to go back to the middle of no-where with no bars, no boys, and no trans-portation?” That’s when it hit me. She’d just described my life in Karachi.

Moving back home means you can no longer dwell on the real existential ques-tions.

No Netflix, no Spotify, no YouTube, no guarantee of running water or uninterrupt-ed electricity. No Sephora! All right, fine. It’s not that I don’t know how trivial I sound to your politically correct minds. I get it. This is the narrative in your head: “Here comes the poor privileged woman, cribbing about her internet struggles while other people have actual problems to deal with.” I understand there are tragedies bigger than not being able to find your favourite brand of multi-grain bread, but let me tell you- the struggle is real. Being a single woman in Pakistan is not a role for the faint of heart. It requires nerves of steel, the tight upper lip of a Brit-ish monarch and gruelling patience.

From negotiating parental curfews, to bulldozing adjusting my expectations when it comes to men, moving back home has been quite a ride.

Pakistan, for the uninitiated single work-ing woman, is something of a riddle. Within the one year I’ve moved back, I’ve realized that a) having a career is not nearly as im-pressive a feat as having a husband, and b) having a husband is considered a feat in all quarters.

A few weeks ago my mother informed me that I don’t get rishtas because I spend considerable amounts of time in the com-pany of male friends at locations that are deemed unsuitable for women (before your imagination runs away with you, I’m talking about dhabas). But I suppose mothers will do what mothers do. It has now come to the point where she strategically tries to sow the seeds of possible romance (and sub-sequently shaadi) with various childhood friends.

I tried to placate her by saying that per-haps I’d find my future husband at a dhaba! Alas, I was given a half hour lecture about how the “qabooliatkighari” may come at any time, and do I really want to end up with a ruffian who spends his time at dha-bas?

Sigh. No mother, no I don’t.

Where did you travel to last?The gorgeous Maldives Islands and Sri Lanka.Were you travelling for work or pleasure?Our group of friends has an annual tradition of travelling together; this was the ultimate leisure retreat.Where did you stay?Vivanta by Taj Resort Island in Maldives, Earl’s Regency in Kandy and the Taj Samudra in Colombo.Did you experiment with your food?Didn’t get to try a lot of local cuisines but had some of the most amazing food experiences we’ve had in our travels together, from a Thai DIY barbeque buffet on the beach in Maldives, to the most eclectic fusion cuisine in a small bistro in Colombo (a lemongrass panna cotta that was literally to die for amongst other things).What was the most unusual thing you encoun-tered?Our first day in Kandy was some sort of a blessed day for the locals, a total of 11 wedding receptions had taken place in the hotel lobby by the time we got done with breakfast!Best vacation find?

Odel! A super friendly on the pocket high street fashion chain in Sri Lanka! We almost bought the entire store!Most memorable moments?

The entire time we were in Mal-dives really, from the moment

you set your eyes on that chunk of heaven you’re completely mesmer-

ized. It felt like a dream that all us wished would never end.

Any incident that is funny in retrospect but was scary or uncomfortable at the time?We rented a car in Kandy and decided to explore the city on our own with the super handy Google maps app (you know this won’t end well). While returning from the el-ephant orphanage around 2 hours away from the city we got super late and super lost, and the phone died! ....You can imagine our horror. Thank God for the super nice tuk tuk driver who lead us back to the city driving ahead of us for a whole hour! We’re so sticking to taxis next time!What was the general vibe of the city/country?Maldives of course is super laid back, you just want to unwind, relax and take in all the beauty. Colombo has a young and preppy vibe. Its just super positive and the locals are the nicest people we’ve come across in our travels at least. Kandy is a little more traditional and... well boring ....everybody sleeps around 8 .... yes that hap-pens!Three sites that you’d consider must-visit?1. The whole of Maldives really! It’s a must go!2. The Elephant Orphanage close to Kandy3.Green Path Art Pola, a street laden with paintings overlooking a lush green garden, such a wonderful insight into the budding art scene of Colombo. You can socialize with young local artists and get to buy their beautiful creations at super affordable prices. It’s raw talent!Your best meal?It’s difficult to pin point just one, but the Swordfish we had at Open, The Grill, a Mexican restaurant in our resort in Maldives had us at a loss for words. A succulent fillet of fish topped, with two perfectly grilled tiger prawns in a spicy Mexican sauce was a divine experience for the taste buds.… and night-life?Non existent in Maldives and Kandy, and a little low tempo in Colombo.Five essentials for travelling?Allof us, of course! A lot of sunscreen, a killer pair of shades, a swanky wardrobe and a very good camera.

The author, affectionately referred to as Sunshine by her loved ones, recently moved to London from New York. She is enjoying settling in while discovering

the city with her 8-month-old daughter in tow. Watch this space for her mus-ings on London, sweet treats (that she shouldn’t be consuming now that the

baby is no longer an excuse!), parenting, decorating, and anything really that

tickles her fancy!

So this week witnessed some serious damage to my credit card, as I found myself on the hunt for some flora and fauna at an amazing nursery in Wandsworth: Neal’s Nurseries. This time I took Baby N and my housekeeper, Mrs. P with me. I thought Baby N would enjoy being around nature, and Mrs. P is just a treasure trove of information on plants and their upkeep -- and let’s be honest, she is really who is going to keep these babies alive, so I thought she should be there to advise. If you do ever decide to make a trip, just remember that the nursery is located right opposite the Wandsworth Prison! Eek! A tad creepy I know, but the prison actually looked like a happy, sunny place, and that sort of made me feel better about it.The nursery itself was quite expansive, and for a first-timer like me, a little overwhelming too. I had absolutely no idea where to start and Mrs. P was behaving like a kid in a candy store, so outside intervention was definitely needed. Luckily, the staff on hand was very helpful. They walked me through

the plants and helped me make some wise decisions, so that I ended up with a collection that wasn’t just pretty but had some staying power as well.Useful tip: if you don’t want to be buying new plants for every season, best to get a mix of evergreens, with a few annuals, so that you have some kind of foliage in your garden throughout the year. The annuals, as the name suggests, will only last one season!That made me sound quite smart, didn’t it? Like, I’ve learned a lot about plants today. Well, not really. I still don’t know much, but I’m hoping that owning a few will help increase my knowledge on the subject. We got to the nursery at noon and ended up leaving a whopping 3 hours later! Suffice it to say choosing plants and then their containers and then all the paraphernalia that goes with them is a long and tedious process. The good thing is I was able to pick up planters for all my houseplants, finally! So that is definitely a job well done.It was getting a little embarrassing seeing them in their plastic containers everyday. Not only were they a daily reminder of my indolence but they also left me an easy target for one of Mr. M’s lectures. “You must have a system in place if you want to be able to get things done” – whatever happened to being a

free spirit!Meanwhile, back to the patio. So I set up everything outside, and then I re-arranged it. And then I went back a few hours later and rearranged it once again. And then, just when the last dregs of sunlight remained in the sky (it gets dark at 9 PM in London these days), I quickly rearranged it once again.It was nearly time for Mr M to be home, but the very last of the orders were still on their way! Of course, the last bit of delivery from the nursery arrived on Friday evening, just when Mr. M was walking through the door! In other words, I got busted on the last leg of my covert operation. However, I am happy to report that Mr. M was more than happy with the final product, so Mrs. P, Baby N and I deserve a little pat on the back.Of course, like any other room in my house, I will always keep on adding to it and changing things around, but for now at least it is in a state where we can enjoy some sunny afternoons and hopefully some delicious burgers, as soon as Mr. M gets that grill going! And while I head out to the patio, here’s a little recipe for a drink you can enjoy on yours…

Virginia’s Elephant’s MilkThis was a drink my husband and I came across while traveling around the Amalfi Coast one summer and it quickly became our favorite! We were staying at a hotel just outside of Positano, and were invited by the lovely owner, Virginia, for drinks one evening. When she found out we didn’t drink alcohol she instructed the bartender to make us a most delicious and refreshing mocktail called Elephant’s Milk. I have been recreating my own version ever since, and with each sip am always reminded

of that wonderful trip to Positano, the clear blue skies and azure water, the smell of the fig trees in the evening,

the vivid colors of the bougainvillaea, and Virginia’s warm

hospitality.The only thing different

in this recipe is that I have added mint. You can use any good brand of almond syrup (also known as orgeat or orzata syrup), though I prefer the Italian brand, Ferrara. Warning: It can be quite sweet, so mess around with how much water or lemon juice you want to add and make it to your taste.
